I grew up in a small town, and it wasn’t exactly enlightened if you know what I mean.
There was this hotel which offered cheap rooms to migrant workers. The townsfolk weren’t happy. It was around the time that the UK invaded Iraq, and people didn’t want a hotel full of Iraqis.
Then when the UK went in to fight the Taliban, everyone complained about the hotel being full of “Afghanis”.
It was the same group of people in both instances. They were just assigned the nationality the townsfolk thought of as the common enemy at that particular time. If we’d invaded Australia people would’ve been moaning about how we had a hotel full of Ozzies.
