COVID19: Perspective From A (Sort Of...) Expert-Adjacent Person

It isn’t different, it’s just that we were very lucky in the past 50 years which bred complacency - the media perception was that Ebola in Central Africa disappeared “on it’s own” while in reality it was quashed by strong public health measures in a very challenging environment, and still killed A LOT of people.

There’s a reason everybody freaked out over the several Ebola cases in the US and contact tracing did it’s part in preventing the spread by finding and isolating 100+ people each of the infected was in contact with.

Had the US and EU stopped air travel with China in mid-January 2020 and instituted rigorous contact tracing for potential cases we would have forgotten Covid by now and in all likelihood the Wikipedia entry would have contained the actual names of all deceased.

I think part of the blame lies on social media that bred a toxic discourse that persists to this day - the left considered open borders and international travel almost a natural right and attacked Trump for his (ineffective) air travel ban, while the right framed the conversation that any common sense public health measure is by definition tyranny and that “it’s just the flu”.

Blood banks in the US have found Covid in donations going back to Dec 2019, so even mid Jan might have been too late. Just adding to your points, not contesting.

Logical progression on next plague - as transmissable plus greater lethality = this will be scary.

Donald Trump repeatedly called covid-19 a “hoax”, pushed hydroxychloroquine (proven to be dangerous, perhaps increasing mortality rates associated with covid-19) and blocked Fauci on live television from answering questions about the drug’s efficacy or lack thereof. But yes, Trump should have fired Fauci…

The irony within your statement ceases to amaze me. I am always open to altering my narrative if factual, informative data can be brought to the table.

I don’t suffer from TDS. As much as I abhor Donald Trump as a person and as much as I disagreed with the majority of his policy enactments I have been perfectly capable of recognising and crediting him for the few policy enactments (like recognising Jerusalem as the capitol of Isreal) that I agreed with.

I’m not so biased as to dismiss everything the prior POTUS has done “because it’s Donald Trump”. I’m not a zealot…

I’ll put down 100$ in ripple (seriously) that this doesn’t eventuate.

Imagine… Like the original SARS but as infectious as covid… Hundreds of millions would die

Aren’t those covers the evidence you need right there? How much of our understanding of those has changed since those covers? Why would you expect previous health issues and studies to easily explain how to prevent and treat this when it’s spread on a global level?

I mean…if we knew all the right answers immediately don’t you think the results would have been vastly different? Of course it was different than previous viruses in some ways and the same in others. But it sounds like you’re wondering why didn’t we know all the answers already.

Hell man this article was written in April. It’s not like scientists have been twiddling their thumbs. It’s like you’re asking why haven’t we completely cured cancer its not brand new.

I mean simple things like not knowing if masks are needed, not knowing plexiglass will make it worse. They are all airborne viruses, what makes the transmission of this one so different that we had no idea what to do.

That’s a question for people who know more about it than me. But I don’t view it as a big deal really. It’s shit we didn’t know. Knowledge changes over time hell go back and read articles on here from 20 years ago and realize that some of that just doesn’t fit with the science of right now. We just didn’t know then what we know now.

I get what you’re saying but I don’t think this is a good example given the type of industry and the quality of both the “experts” and studies conducted.

I’m only saying this because of the conversation I had with @unreal24278 above pertaining to “anti-intellectualism”. If anyone asks me about “science” with regards to this sport, I’d just say go train with big and strong guys in the gym instead of reading anything to do with it online.

Fuckers who didn’t look like they trained took 20 fucking years to acknowledge MMC as valid after 2 decades of scoffing at bodybuilders, which can really just be interpreted as intramuscular coordination for anyone who has actually trained with real bodybuilders AND read the existing science.

If someone starts quoting studies when conversing with me during a simple topic about picking things up and putting them down, most of the time I’m simply going to lose interest. I wouldn’t consider this anti-intellectualism, but it could construed as something along those lines. That’s all I’m saying.

I do not think there’s any real “anti-intellectualism” movement going on but I’d urge people not to apply this logic to topics way more advanced than this.

Holy shit I just read that the US already has a 40% vaccination rate.

Good job, guys.

Australia has a 1.9% vaccination rate! We will keep our borders shut forever! Can’t get covid when nothing comes in or out of fortress Australia

Except covid just broke out in Victoria… And they’ve locked down extensively… For the fourth time…

If only we’d focused on actually vaccinating people as opposed to shutting down our economy for the foreseeable future.

I don’t disagree but that isn’t why I brought it up. The “accepted” wisdom from articles 20 years ago simply isn’t accepted wisdom now as science (and anecdote) have changed. We used to think you needed to wake up in the middle of the night to pound a protein shake. We used to think if you didn’t drink a protein shake the moment you put the last set down it was all for nothing. The key to weight loss was to eat every 2 hours to stoke the metabolic furnace.

As I said just like with Covid knowledge changes over time.

Yet as soon as any given implementation used to mitigate covid mediated harm is found to be defective the anti vaxxers/conspiracy theorists rile up in a big heap “see, it doesn’t work! None of it works!!! Evil liberals are using covid to try induce complacency within the masses!”.

Like… No, that’s not how science works. Covid has only been around for a year and a half. The rate by which scientific advancements have been curated to combat this illness has been unprecedented. Erroneous policy enactments and treatment protocols are to be expected when you’re dealing with a particular virus that we’ve literally never dealt with before.

Though the rate by which a country abolishes defective policy or implements new medical advancements aimed at creating a “covid normal” society will differ. A paternalistic nanny state society like Australia will be very late to the game when it comes to initiatives like Vaccine passports, attempting to achieve herd immunity or promoting vaccine incentives.

I am not talking about Trump. What does Trump have to do with the malfeasance done by Fauci? People have talked about Trump to death. Trump does not have to do with the actions of the fine Dr. Fauci. If anything they were at logger heads, so what does Trump have to do with it? Nothing. This is about Fauci and only Fauci and what HE did.

You are trying to contravene the newly released insight into actions to Fauci because ‘orange man bad’? That doesn’t make any sense and it’s not on topic.

Not that $100 means much but I’ll take your money. The email dump from the FIA is pretty damning for the good doctor. In his own words he said that the addition of the protein looks ‘engineered’, in January 2020. And we know he funded Ecolab, which in turn funded ‘gain of function’ research on the SARS/ Covid virus. Feel free to independently verify these facts. The information is out there.

I got mine. I don’t let politics dictate my health decisions. I wasn’t terrified of it, because I know I generally healthy and stood a low chance of dying from it. That being said, I don’t want to get it (covid) if at all possible. So I got my vaccine as early as I could. I am sure a lot more people would get it if the politics were taken out of it. But ironically, as the MSM blasts republican men for not getting it, the actual data suggests that the BIPOC’s are least likely to get it, at this time. Asians are most likely, Honkey’s are second, and Blacks are 4th.

So naturally the MSM is telling a bold face lie. I have seen this anecdotally as well. I had a relative who went to their black doctor, whose office is mostly black and talking vaccine, they all refuse to get it, they are afraid of it. Natuarally I recommended the relative find a different doctor. Of all the black people I know, only 1 has gotten it. Whatever the hold up is, it’s certainly not white men who are the problem.

Have you investigated as to why? Is there a distribution problem? Are people refusing to get it? What’s going on with the low vaccination rate? Are you vaccinated?
It hurts now to be closed, it’s going to hurt spectacularly if the rest of the world is open and yall are still locked down.

Yes. Our federal government put almost all of their stock into the astrazenica vaccine without stopping to think “perhaps we ought to have a plan B. Postmarketing reports haven’t even been released yet”.

At the very start of the rollout astrazenica fell victim to polarisation, with the blood clot issue being taken out of proportion. Think astrazenica is the only covid vaccine with potential side effects? Look at the postmarketing reports for the pfizer vaccine, or Moderna for that matter!

Anyhow, the health committee here said astrazeinca need not be given to those under 50, though we didn’t have an alternative. I was fuming at this, as we all know vaccination is pivotal for re-opening borders/the economy. Covid-19 is very infectious, you can’t become complacent due to a false sense of security. But this is exactly what happened here

Our society is SO paternalistic and risk averse that a ton of the older population opted to simply not take the shot, worrying about dying from blood clots. You’re more likely to experience blood clots on birth control, or from covid for that matter than from the vaccine, but I digress. As we had no covid, people were happy to skip vaccination and pretend as if everything is back to normal despite an ongoing total travel ban ongoing for nearly 18 months now, despite international students not being allowed in, despite snap shut domestic border closures occurring whenever a singular case pops up (you get my point).

This coupled with a growing and very strong anti-vax movement and a total lack of government initiative/incentive for people to get the shot (fully vaccinated people are still subject to travel bans and domestic border closures) meant no one was getting the jab. Interesting as we produce around one million doses of astrazenica domestically per week.

Our federal government has secured a deal with pfizer, with vaccines purportedly arriving around Q4 (this year). However once again we’ve put ALL of our stock into the hopes the vaccine arrives on time. Our government’s vaccine initiative has only vaccinated around 10% of aged care residents, and staff are typically not vaccinated either. Our rollout initially detailed all aged care staff/workers would be fully immunised by late march, had we met our projected targets 15 million Australians would have been immunised by now

But no, we are still subject to some of the most draconian and undemocratic travel restrictions in the secular world; we are still locking down over single digit case numbers even when communicable transmission isn’t present, we are still stuck with a “net elimination mentality”.

I don’t know how this will turn out, it appears our federal and state governments are reluctant to drop the “elimination” schtick even after our population is theoretically fully immunised.

Partially, I was happy to get the shot ASAP.

Due to a lack of people showing up to get the jab plenty of hubs/clinics have agreed to vaccinate anyone who shows up so long as you sign a declaration. Unfortunately due to rampant misinformation it’s becoming more and more difficult to convince people to take the shot. Surveys indicate more than 30% of Aussie adults never plan to get vaccinated. For reasons like this it tis imperative our federal governments sets up initiatives or vaccine passports (an idea that was rebuked for… no fucking reason).

I’ve been trying to convince people to take the shot, and I’ve actually gotten some people on board. It might not be much, but I’d rather give it my all and convince anyone I can.

The sooner we acquire a vaccinated population, the sooner your government has to act regarding our absolutely fucking draconian restrictions. Look at Victoria, extending stage FOUR lockdowns (look up what stage four entails) over single digit case numbers because the cluster isn’t “eliminated”. To my knowledge Victoria doesn’t even have a single mystery case atm.

How the hell are young adults scared to take the astrazeinca shot, but they’re fine with taking dodgy, untested pills that occasionally cause serotonin syndrome, arrhythmias, hyperthermia etc? The logic baffles me

I am posting this article to make sure that it sinks in that vaccinations for Covid-19 are not suddenly going to let us let our guard down:

It isn’t a brutal pandemic in itself, likely, but be aware that more is emerging out of the rest of the animal world.

I think we’ve long established that a significant percentage of what’s reported in the MSM is bullshit. Which doesn’t mean alternative media is more credible. My thought process is relatively simple. I just go with probability and erring on the side of caution when I read or watch stuff from any source.

The problem with alternative media is that since they generally appeal to a niche market, they can start with one silly point, then turn it into something so complex by the time anyone notices how dumb it’s become, you have a group of Flat Earthers already formed.
