Coronavirus - What Happened?

I agree. Given that the stability package for 2008 was done in an evening, in blatant disregard for the treaties, there’s always a chance for an 11th hour change of heart.

Or, otherwise, it will be smaller.

Oh no. No one can afford to leave and be left in the open in the new dog-eat-dog world.

It’s just that the belief in German infallibility is gone, and the cards are stacked somewhat differently politically.

That’s why the tinpot dictator Orban is getting a free pass now.

After having pulled a Palpatine, it must be said.

That remains to be seen, doesn’t it? We’re in bandit country now.

Edit: If there are no Eurobonds, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see 1 or more country depart. The emperor appears naked, they may have to run to the dresser to pull on their boxers.

Orban is quite an operator. Studied in Cambridge on a Soros scholarship, the avowed atheist is now the defender of Christian values.

It’s kind of a shame he’s not a head of a state in Central Asia to splurge oil money on football and drugs.

Nope. You were always a special case, with only one foot inside mentally during the 40+ years.

Too much interconnectivity.

Putin’s buddy Matteo Salvini was blindsided by the pandemic after realizing how much Italy depends on the both the GSC and the EU wide supply chains. Hence, his popularity plummeted.

You say so, but LN is still the most popular party in the country.

Maybe he doesn’t sweep to victory come Election Day, but he would be the booky favourite, if trends hold.

As a citizenry, yes. Our civil service were always wholly in. It was a U.K. civil servant who was one of the founding fathers of the EU. Arthur Salter, a friend and confidante of Monnet.

Even our original entry was one pursued with zealous fervour by Edward Heath, who is the most pro EU national leader of any member state. He also entered despite knowing that DeGaulle was building an agricultural policy that would harm the U.K. to France’s benefit.

If we have one unique quality, it is our national leader’s support for a project we never really liked.

Edit: I don’t wish to re-argue the last few years, but the idea that there was some colossal reluctance among British high command for the EU just ain’t so. I’m happy we are done with it, as are Europeans, I would suspect.

Well, we’re in uncharted territory politics-wise everywhere. We’ll see how it plays out.

Another thing - diehard Libertarians seem to be oddly quiet recently.

Funny that, isn’t it?

Agreed. Neither of us could usefully predict much at present. It would be a masturbatory exercise, at best.

That’s weird…

It’s true except for in scenarios where everyone needs to be hospitalized at the same time or something. People in the Depression canned tumbleweeds. People now are buying more streaming services because they are running out of things to watch. The nation wasn’t worried about running out of food, water, or electricity. They were watching a crazy mullet man own his own zoo.

We’ve known this has been getting bad for weeks and are most of us out hunting for food thinking it’s very likely we will soon need it? No we’re fucking around on an anonymous forum.

Or dying of fentanyl overdose.

Edit: not to say I necessarily disagree with your optimism, but the disaster has not yet hit. Suicides, substance abuse, civil disorder at all possible in the coming months. It may not be as bad as the dust bowl, but it won’t be pretty if the economy doesn’t actually restart.

And we have huge numbers of people that have no idea why that is.

And the government is going to send us a check from money it borrowed in our name.

I’m sorry which part of the post?

Economic concerns aren’t a paper tiger issue, and having a 30% unemployment for any significant period is the path to hell.

The whole post.

Remember, @zecarlo

Only about half of all Americans…that Liberal, lazy half…will accept those checks and assistance.

So its all good.

Besides, let’s be honest here, fathers were selling their daughters into prostitution during the Great Depression. How close could we get before we are in a world entirely unknown by any of us?

Yes and I would never say otherwise. It’s not even optimism about where this goes in the short term. We’re just in a million times better spot than the start of the Great Depression. Much of the south was in that hole for a long time before it started and the Great Depression dragged on for forever. It’s possible this does the same, but horrific economic numbers won’t make that so.

All that stuff has the possibility to increase for sure but it is not a given.

Ol’ Darwin’s always just around the corner on Dipshit Avenue.

Agreed.
