Coronavirus - What Happened?

Yeah, there’s a bunch of potentially scary things going on. ACE2 receptors are the ones the viral spike protein binds to, and these are also abundant in the heart–this is why you are seeing reporting of heart attacks/other symptoms and why cardiologists are concerned.

Heart, kidneys, intestines, brain, and testicles (previously mentioned in this thread) are well-known to express ACE2 receptors abundantly, and we don’t know the effects yet. The respiratory symptoms are the earliest and most obvious, but those are all some really kind of important tissues to have functional .

Specifically, neurons in the brain express ACE2. Also, the original SARS was found in cerebrospinal fluid of patents (as well as in animal studies).

Really important to note that we do not know the effects or the extent of the effects in these tissues yet. We don’t know if it will act similarly or not to SARS-CoV-1, though most researchers expect some sort of similarity based in the viruses attributes.

Not at all. It showed promise in in vitro studies, some indications it might work or might not in humans (but complicated by many factors, not the least of which was that the most severe cases were the ones most likely to both die and be administered the drug).

Basically, like Dr. Fauci has said, “the jury is out”. Trump shot his mouth off about it, and then other people reacted against it.

Basically we don’t know yet.

That’ll show corona who’s boss.

Germany has different rules in each state. As far as I know the rules are most strict in Bavaria, which is also where I live. Gyms, schools, clubs, bars etc. closed on March 17, the lockdown started on March 22, which means only “essential” shops are allowed to be open, other shops must close. Basically any workplace with customer contact had to close. Workplaces without direct customer contact remain open but people should work from home if possible.

You are only allowed to meet people with whom you live together, and are only allowed to leave home alone or with these people for “essential” activities, which include shopping, working out, going for a walk etc. But there have been cases where people were sued for reading a book in a park, basically it is up to the police to determine what is allowed. You have to keep 1.5m distance at all times (5 feet in freedom units).

Big events are forbidden until end of august and schools will probably open only for the graduating classes in May (when exactly decides each state).

Economy is going downhill, 750,000 businesses have applied for reduced working hours, ironically also hospitals which currently have no use for some specialists as the hospitals are now only doing live-saving surgeries besides corona related stuff. So far there has been no rush to the hospitals yet.

Edit: Oh, this is actually my first post. I registered here because I wanted to start a training log some time, well this has been postponed.

Apparently I am now required by law to wear a facemask to get anything. This shit has gone beyond stupid.

Why do you think that is stupid?

I’m now compelled by law to wear a facemask indefinitely. Zero people in my zip code have had the virus to date.

I have lost track of all the things that are now illegal in the State of Maryland and/or that I’m legally compelled to do.

Irrelevant. #flattenthecurve #secondwave

Get with the program…

Fine, but I want my two minutes of hate.

Prince George or Montgomery? Just wondering since both those counties are the only ones on google that said it was mandatory and both have quite a few cases.

Seems like both are close to 2,000. My county has 12. Out of curiosity, not attacking your feeling.

Remember not so long ago when the large majority of the country had zero cases in their zipcode?

You seem intent on bashing (what you see as heavy handed, unneccesary) policy, but then also bash officials for not acting aggressively enough at the start of the CV outbreak. Do you see the irony?

Point being, it’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation. Maybe I’m misinterpreting your venting of frustration for criticizing policy… In which case I’ll kindly fuck right off.

Hogan just announce the state wide requirement today. I wouldn’t be caught dead living in Prince George’s or Montgomery county.

Gotcha I didn’t see anything about statewide.

I think of these overly aggressive measures as bolting, padlocking, and chaining up the barn after the horses have galavanted off into the mountains.

The stay home order has been in effect for almost a month. We have less than 2500 cases in a state of 6M.

What?

Hogan is acting like Maryland is New York. It’s not. We’ve had at least two nursing homes hit badly. Most of the counties surrounding Baltimore with the exception of I believe PG county are pretty much unscathed or have very few cases. We’re a pretty rural state outside of the beltway.

These one-size-fits-all mandates are ridiculous. Where am I even supposed to get a mask from? I can’t walk in a store to buy one now assuming I can even find them. I can’t stand the knee-jerk response like we’re a bunch of children. If I’m 6’ away from someone why the hell do i even need a mask. The WHO and CDC can’t seem to decide if we need masks either. This shit drives me nuts is all.

I view it more as locking up the barn door after a few horses have ran in the hopes of preventing more.

Not to say I’m necessarily in agreement with all moves. Merely that I do support actions to prevent the spread just not sure how I feel yet on certain ones and if certain ones should have a penalty.

You can make a homemade mask with google that I would assume fits the requirements. Our work got some for us a while back as we are forced to go in the public for kid emergencies. But my wife messed around and “made” one with two handkerchiefs and hair ties even though she was just seeing how it was.

I’ve got an old paintball mask somewhere. I’ll just wear that.

Have to cover the holes I guess.

This scapegoating of the WHO really doesn’t sit well with me. There are obvious questions not being asked about the whole thing.

Why is it up to the WHO to decide how to deal with Taiwan?

China has bullied the overwhelming majority of sovereign states on the planet into pretending Taiwan does not exist, so how come the WHO’s tiptoeing around the Taiwan landmine is a stick to beat them with?

Is it fair or even sensible to expect public health professionals to carry out next-level diplomacy while chasing pathogens?

I had a small stockpile of N95’s but I gave them to a friend of mine who has a kid with cystic fibrosis. As an aside, some of my workout/bjj/bouncing log readers who’ve been around for a while will remember her as Dander Girl. She’s a sweetheart and CF is serious even without the CCP Virus.

So I’ve been venturing out in a shemagh. Fuck anyone who doesn’t like it. It’s the best face mask I have left. Also worth noting, I’m not being compelled to wear it, but encouraged.

Totally on board with that. It’s amazing how different a person will respond when someone politely asks them to do something and when someone tells them to do something. With a threat.
