People at my job and some random others in the past tell me I should have been a lawyer. The problem is, I’m not sure I should take it as a compliment.
We’ve all had compliments but it feels pretty funny and wrong to list them, personally. I suppose it is better than dwelling on the insults though, which is far more prevalent.
The thing I wonder is, do the compliments help as much as the insults? I think in my life that criticism has fueled me far more than compliments. I guess criticisms hold you back as far as you let them, and it is quite something to overcome.
I think I’ve come to discover the only compliments that matter, are the ones that I earn, and finally give to myself.[/quote]
I find it interesting the dynamics of how people see you, versus how we see ourselves, and how the two can be so different.
However, when I compliment someone, there’s nothing more frustrating when someone doesn’t believe that i’m being sincere, or doesn’t believe it themselves and discounts what i’m saying. Whether or not you believe what they’re saying, take it for what it is, a positive comment.
While I do like compliments, criticisms can be motivating, also. It all depends on who it comes from. If I get a compliment from sombody that I love and respect, it feels pretty damn good. While I may not agree with how they view me, it’s cool that see me like they do. It still means a lot.
MCT, do you like to be complimented, or can you live without it, even from the people that matter to you?
