Coming Back From the Dead

That’s Nice Benching Cav . I see a PR coming, or not, Carry on.

GV, I’m starting the think the only people giving me decent advice are ones training for years and not trying to sell me something.

Work is going to rev up, so posting might get spotty. Rushing between classes, throwing my eating schedule out of whack. Minor dehydration. My gym has several clubs in the chain in the city, visited the new school today, so dropped by a new one. Getting really tired of super easy warm up sets, so upped the weight on every set a tad:

Squat
85 x 5 hmm, oddly heavy
105 x 5
125 x 5 throwing me off
145 x 5
170 x 5 weird - actually felt light compared to the others.

Bench
55 x 5
75 x 5
95 x 5
115 x 5
135 x 5 oh no. This felt so hard, the last rep I suddenly screamed at the top of my lungs. Got it up, but a max effort. Surprised I didn’t get thrown out of the place. People stared at me.

I am VERY angry at this being so damn hard.

Seated row
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
90 x 5
110 + 5 lb plate * 5 it worked.

Situp
40# db x 6
40 x 7

And now for some hyper extensions. I’ll just look around, and . . . um, hmm, no hyper. Fine. Settle on one of the dopey machines.

Cybex Back Ext
90 x 12
130 x 10 is it me, or are these stupid things calibrated light?

So PO’d at my bench, did some tri extensions on cable:
60 x 10
65 x 12
70 x 10
75 x 10
80 x 8 that’s two thirds the weight stack, and still not much resistance. How can I suck so much at bench yet knock the machines around?

looks like my post disappeared into the nether regions of the net, anyways hope this doesn’t end up being a double post.

what i was trying to say is that in your previous workout you moved 1500lbs before your 135 set, and this workout you moved 1700lbs before your attempted 135 set. of course its going to feel harder! also you did the extra 2 reps so over all its a double victory really.

i get the same feeling of the lighter weights being harder than the heavier weights on the squat. I think its cause my body is expecting to have to balance that extra weight so when its not there it throws me off my groove.

Thanks, Zenon. But consider: last night I slipped into bed and got a LOT of sound sleep. First time in a week didn’t have to get up early (well, early for me). Looks like I was a tad over-stressed. Feel really good today.

Lighter vs heavy: when doing the light weights, I’m thinking “Oh no, I HAVE to do more than this, this feels kinda hard, don’t know if I can do it”. But when doing the heavy, it’s “Hey, it’s moving, I don’t have to do any more weight, this is great!”

Good work in here Cav. Just out of curiosity, what do you teach?

Thanks, Ogre. I teach web design, computer graphics, game design, and motion graphics at first school. At second one will teach web programming and database.

Two good nights of sleep. Will it make a difference?

Squat
85 x 5
105 x 5
125 x 5
125 x 5 feels good

OH Press
45 x 5
55 x 5
75 x 5 increased this one a tad cuz the other sets were easy
90 x 5 better than last time, the bar was more level. Last rep was awfully close to a max, though

Deadlift
105 x 5 kicking up the warmup sets a bit
135 x 5
175 x 5
215 x 5 good one, I was really energetic

Cybex ab
100 x 10
100 x 10

program said to stop there, but still angry at arm strength, or lack thereof

Tri Pressdowns
65 x 10
75 x 10
85 x 8

Nice work Cav!

Thanks, Sen Say. Umm, everyone does understand I’m posting pounds, not kilos, right?

OK, temp is up to around freezing, but sun was out and s-h-i-n-i-n-g. Felt so good. Sun coming through the gym windows. Ahhh.

Squat
85 x 5
105 x 5
125 x 5
145 x 5
175 x 3 now, I’ve done 185 before, but had really good control on this, got really low, no problem coming up
105 x 8 oh damn, wrong weight, no wonder it was so easy
125 x 8 that’s good

Bench
55 x 5
75 x 5
95 x 5
115 x 5
135 x 3 getting a bit better
95 x 8

think the problem with left arm is rotator cuff issues, nothing serious, but twisting arms while benching really puts a twinge in shoulder, gotta watch it

Seated row
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
90 x 5
120 x 3

forgot to do the 80 x 8 - seriously, what’s wrong with me nowadays? Two jobs is really keeping me hopping.

Dip
-60 x 7
-60 x 7 definitely getting better, can’t wait to do the damn things without help

Chin
-80 x 5
-80 x 5

got such long arms, I’m thinking low reps do me as much good as higher reps for normal people. Or maybe I’m lazy.

You’re making the 5x5 sound like too much fun, I want to try it… eventually. Watch that shoulder now please!

Will be careful about benching, a little change in technique can really wreak damage.

Hmm, seems the moderator didn’t like my link to Bill Starr’s site. Something about there was a danger of advertising or soliciting.

Anyway, Techno, if you want to try your hand at 5x5, just google on Bill Starr and I’m sure you’ll find all you need.

School can’t seem to get my account set up. Phone company playing games with me. Insurance company won’t mail me what they promised. Car broke down. And when it does run, have to spend every damn morning scraping snow/ice off it. I’m irritated.

Squat
85 x 5
105 x 5
125 x 5
145 x 5
175 x 5 this is good, not quite as much as I’ve done in the past, but not hard at all. I’m pleased.

Bench
55 x 5
75 x 5
95 x 5
115 x 5
135 x 5

no pain in shoulder, took care of it, all reps smooth . . . BUT . . . that last set was either failure or the next thing to it. I did not scream this time, but very close, it was painfully hard . . . I am PO’d this is such a brick wall

Seated row
60 x 5
70 x 5
80 x 5
100 x 5
120 x 5 now I DID hit failure - what’s up here?

Decline crunch
40 lb DB x 9
40 x 9

hmm - this wasn’t hard

Cybex Back Ext
140 x 8
140 x 8

Tri Pressdown
70 x 10
80 x 10
90 x 8
100 x 8
110 x 8

that’s almost the whole damn stack and it’s just flying up . . . why is this no problem yet bench is crushing me?

NOT a good week. My background check got screwed up and school doesn’t know when I can get an account on their system. Finally got the written proof AT&T has been stealing from me. Car started making funny sound, took it to garage, they found about 20 different things wrong, and I could only afford to get half of them fixed.

Squat
85 x 5
105 x 5
125 x 5
125 x 5

easy. Now - do I go up in OH press? I really, really want to.

OH press
45 x 5
55 x 5
75 x 5 didn’t seem too bad
95 x 0 uh oh. not good. take a moment, rest, collect my thoughts.
95 x 3 kept elbows up, didn’t let bar get below chin. Will have to stay at this for several weeks.

Deadlift
105 x 5

I hate these polygonal plates . . . wait. What’s that leaning against the wall? Can it be . . . ROUND plates??? And - my God - they’re RUBBER COATED!!! Santa came late, but I must have been a good boy!

135 x 5
175 x 5
220 x 5

best part is the round plates are a fraction larger than the polygons, so even if I mix them, the round ones touch the floor, not the others.

That went well, off to the machines

Cybex ab
105 x 12
105 x 12

why are the machines so easy and the barbell presses so hard?

Awesome.

It’s been a shitty week. Hooray for gym santa!

Hey Cav maybe post a video of the bench to see if something can be picked up. Its worth a shot , with those tri push down numbers I got to believe that somewhere in there is a bigger bench. Looks good Cav.

have you tried external rotations for your rotator cuff? helped mine.

What the hell with all the ads? I can’t even see the page anymore! It’s like an epidemic, all the sites are doing it!!

Er… what ads dost thou speak about?
