Coming Back From the Dead

Yeah I hear ya on the scoliosis, any time I bring up mine to say maybe it’s formed part of my problems I just get blank stares. Just something we have to get on with. Did you go into a food coma after all of that

No, my gut was stuffed but I didn’t feel at all bloated. Heavy lifting seems to burn up nutrients, can eat and eat but barely get satisfied.

Continuing to experiment with 5x5. This is supposed to be the day to kick up weights:

Squat
75 x 5 easy
95 x 5 piece of cake
115 x 5 bit of effort
135 x 5 went OK. Next one is supposed to 2.5% more than last time, no weights, so do same weight but try and push fast
145 x 5 up and down!
115 x 8

this is promising.
Hadn’t done bench in past couple of weeks, so just experiment:

Bench
65 x 5
85 x 5 no prob
105 x 5 OK
115 x 3 hmm, a little tough
95 x 8

those are the numbers if I was doing the program, educated guesses on weight, looks about right. I’d guessed about 120 for max weight not hit failure. (God I hate long thin arms)

Seated row
70 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 5
110+2.5 x 3 I hooked a 2.5 lb plate on the weight stack, worked fine
90 x 8

He says assistance work for arms. Aha, an excuse for chins & dips.

Assisted dip
-110 x 9 oops, had done better than that
-90 x 8 ah, that’s good

Assisted chin
-100 x 6 damn, tough, came close to failure

Well, one job lead blew up in my face. Amazing how fast it goes from “they’re begging for people like you” to “sorry, can’t use you”.

Squat
75 x 5
95 x 5 damn, gotta tighten left side, balance going wobbly
115 x 5 hmm, got even lower, concentrate on loosening hips
135 x 5
145 x 5

Bench
45 x 5
65 x 5
85 x 5
105 x 5
115 x 5 hmm, this was good and strong, nice

Seated row
60 x 5
70 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 5
110 + 2.5 plate * 5 whoa, tough, but made all 5 with a bit of pause to boot

Assistance stuff. Get used to this equipment.
Hyper

good workout.

nice work Cav. how much do you weigh?

That’s always a good feeling.

Good luck on the other job leads!

Thanks, guys. Confusion, I weigh about 205. That’s down a little from 6 months ago, I was around 212. Kicked up cardio a little but kept eating well. Would probably have to lose another 20 or 30 or 40 lbs to look lean. Meaning much of my weight isn’t muscle. Which is why I was baffled at the PL meet - how were people weighing less than me lifting the same?

2busy, I’ll be interviewing tomorrow. That plus class makes workout impossible. Full time job paying mucho (by my standard).

Boss just offered me another class. I’m qualified, although I’ve never used that specific software professionally. Sorry folks, but when you take a college course, good chance your prof hasn’t actually touched the thing he’s teaching.

Yay! You’re a fast learner anyway, and you’ve been teaching for awhile… besides what software is it?

Who is Norman Vincent Peale?

Techno, it’s Adobe Fireworks and of course I can do it.

Sen Say, are you on the right log? Nobody’s been talking about Norman Vincent Peale. If you must know, he was famous in the 60’s for writing the book Power of Positive Thinking. Sorta the Tony Robbins of his day.

Well, finished up the last classes. Everybody showed their final project. Some good stuff. After class, they just hung around, chatted, and told me how much fun the class was and they really learned a lot. Pure gold.

Moved yesterday’s workout to today. It’s cold out and snowing. Cool in gym. So what do they do? You guessed it - turn on the ceiling fans full speed. People, please.

Light squat
75 x 5
95 x 5
115 x 5
115 x 5

piece of cake. Getting good and low.

OH press
45 x 5
55 x 5
65 x 5
I did 75 x 5 last time, dare I kick it up?
80 x 5 good and strong!

Deadlift
95 x 5
115 x 5
145 x 5
190 x 5 kicked up a hair from last time, somewhat tough, but got all five.

ab stuff. Try the Cybex machine.
90 x 8
100 x 8
100 x 8

Once again, I don’t feel like body’s been torn apart. Strange but nice.

Today I brave the increase in weight.

Squat
75 x 5
95 x 5
115 x 5
135 x 5 that went well, getting low, now add the extra pounds:
150 x 3 was that all? Seriously? Got good and low.
115 x 8

meanwhile, the bozos next to me were squatting quarter squats, half squats, whatever, and barely using same weight as me. What kind of gym is this? Pathetic. Fine, I’ll just go over to the bench. You guessed it - Mr Quarter Squat comes over, grabs DBs, and starts walking lunges right in front of me. Can’t move or he’ll run into me. Sigh.

Bench
45 x 5
65 x 5 don’t like the twinges in shoulders, try varying grip
85 x 5 that’s better
105 x 5 gotta remember, keep arms tense all the way through
120 x 3 easy. easy. easy. was even pausing a little on chest
85 x 8 definitely pausing on chest, hadn’t even planned it, but just felt like it

Seated Row.
60 x 5
70 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 5
110 + 5 lb plate x 3 weird, almost hit failure, didn’t think it’d be that tough
90 x 8

finally, some assistance work

Dip
-90 x 9
-90 x 8

Chin
-100 x 8
-100 x 8

Still don’t fell like body’s getting torn apart.

looks good Cav. How often are you planning to do this?

Wow, Sen, you’re a regular Norman Vincent Peale. Actually, if I were just 15 yrs younger, I’d probably shock the poor kid.

From 5/87/13…please try to keep up.

Well, Sen Say, I tried to look up that post, but my calendar doesn’t have 87 days for May.

My God . . . he’s invented time travel. No wonder he wins all the office football pools.

OK, this is the day on 5 x 5 where I jack up reps, not weight. Let’s see how it goes. . .

Squat
75 x 5
95 x 5
115 x 5
135 x 5
150 x 5

smooth as silk

Bench
45 x 5
65 x 5
85 x 5
105 x 5
120 x 5

strange, the lower weights felt worse, but the last two sets were under total control, just moving up & down

Seated row
60 x 5
70 x 5
90 x 5
100 x 5
110+5 x 4 almost hit failure, got too much

hmm, this isn’t working. I was doing this a bit different, really squeezing lats, felt good, but last set just too much. Will have to scale back.

Hypers
25 x 8
25 x 8

Sit up decline bench
25 x 8
25 x 8

Well, the gym turned off the fans over the free weight area. It’s a start.

Squat
75 x 5
95 x 5
115 x 5
115 x 5

getting a little easy. B Starr says when to kick up the last set, what about the previous? I’ll figure it out.

OH press
45 x 5
55 x 5
65 x 5
80 x 5 good and solid, next week kick up to 85

Deadlift did I mention this gym uses hexagonal plates? Bleah. However, the rubber pads they give us for deadlifting have diamond striping so once I set the cursed things they more or less stay put.
95 x 5
115 x 5
145 x 5
195 x 5 this is strange, even with mixed grip took some effort. The first 2 sets flew up so fast, gotta realize this one goes slower

Cybex ab
100 x 8 wow, this was tough, strange
90 x 8
90 x 8

nice thing about the machine, it works muscles I almost never use. Which means on the rare occasions I work them, they cramp up PAINFULLY. 90 works just right.

The what and the what what?

Hex plates, meh! But maybe getting mad at them might help?

Happy New Year everyone!

Cybex is a company making exercise equipment. I’m using one of their ab machines. Not too bad, it uses the hip muscles I never work.
