Coming Back From the Dead

Yeah - just got tired of the “STOP BEING SO HARD ON YOURSELF!!!” yelling.

Please come back. We honor and admire your striving and would like to see more. [/quote]

Well . . . since you asked nicely . . .

Been working on bench. Do 120 lbs for 8 reps . . . next week, 10 reps . . . then next week up to 125 lbs. Work on it for a few weeks until reps get to 10 . . . then go up another 5 or 10 lbs. Seems to be working - hope so. Working out how long it’ll take me to get to 200, then 300 . . . man, it takes forever.

Hit brick wall on deadlift. Just can’t get up. Year and half ago did 275 at the meet, now can’t even seem to do that. Couple of weeks ago grabbed 245, and it stayed bolted to the floor. I knew I could do it . . . why didn’t I??? Checked my scoliosis for first time in too long. Right erector is thick and hard as baseball bat, left one is stringy and soft. yech. Been doing lots of left bends and stuff to try and get left side up. Today tried some deads and concentrated on tightening left side . . . but still hard and nearly retched guts onto the floor.

Hip adductor injury seem fairly cleared up, so Friday squatted for first time in 3 months. 95 lbs for 7 reps, 3 sets. Only a slight twinge. Next day, some DOMS in legs (proof that leg extensions don’t do didly for quads) and couldn’t stop eating. Two pounds ground beef, 12 eggs, several cans tuna, big can chicken and several protein shakes, and I think I left out something. Woke up this morning feeling great.

New semester starting at school, and boss gave me 2 new classes to teach. Actually offered me a third, but I didn’t feel comfortable with it. I might be able to make a career off this.

Well who’s fault was that?

I’m glad your back. Now go bully the students, work your weak side and pick up the darned weights.

Cav, dude, you went from one class (obviously they had you on “trial”) to being offered 3! more. As I’ve quoted before, god only gives with one hand (or something like that), and you got the brains end of the deal while most of the people on this site got the brawn. Now go pat yourself on the back, weak and strong side.

More work for the win!! I mean at work AND in the gym…

Strong work Cav. What classes are you teaching?

Intro to multimedia and web development. Offered a grand total of 4 classes, believe it or not, but those two will take all my time. They didn’t give me the previous course shells, so have to create everything from scratch. Good thing I like it.

Did bench stuff yesterday. Slowly advancing. Bench: 135 x 5 for 3. Will shoot for 7 next week, 10 the next, then go up.

DB pullovers: 50 x 10. Getting stressed, stopped at 2 sets.

More stuff for left erectors. Lie on Roman chair, hold 15 lb db, bend 22 reps. Really works it.

Dips: only going down halfway, but felt really in control this time - did an extra set, felt so good.

OH press: 85 x 5. Just got to get it up.

Stuffing myself, weight holding steady at 207.

Hmm, with everyone begging me to post, no one’s here.

Had a forced deload, so much work getting ready for the semester, couldn’t get to gym for a week.

Got back on Saturday. Deadlifts. 235 x 5 for a couple sets. Felt good. Chins were crap as usual. Went home and ate protein till it came out of my ears. Good night’s sleep.

Today did bench stuff. Lost strength in everything. Bench: 135 x 6 . . . barely. Grunting, screaming, shaking, hard, hard. Took weight down to 125. Did 4 reps, and then it stopped dead on my chest. Not moving.

Tried DB pullovers, could only half the reps as last time. OH press, 75 for fewer reps did 85 couple of weeks ago. Straining, grunting, hard work. Then did dips . . . got down a few inches, and didn’t come up.

Wonder how long it takes hard work to pay off? Estimate I have 20 to 30 yrs left on my life . . . hope it comes before then.

Cav- you following any particular program or just doing what “moves” ya? I have had my best results following a program whether its 5/3/1 or 5x5, for me it keeps me focused and honest…Just thinking it might you…but regardless of that…there are good days in the gym and not so good days…every time I have a bad one I get excited because its behind me and leaves me closer to the good ones!

Have a great semester!

Hey Cav, My middle son has a tattoo on his back that reads: If you ain’t dead you ain’t done.
Keep it up it will pay off, and some of us will be there to cheer when it does.

Been doing a basic powerlifting routine - DL on Sunday, bench on Wednesday, squats on Friday. Got out of whack, couldn’t do squats because of injury but now started back in. Squats feel very, very good, although lo weights - 3 months really refreshed everything in hips and legs.

Thinking I may be overtrained, which is why DL isn’t moving and bench is crap. Will take off another week and go to a hardgainer’s kind of routine - say, a 3 way split twice a week, something like that.

Life sucks department - got kicked out of tutoring at school. Budget cuts. Won’t make any money from that.

Life is good department - I complained to the boss and he found another class for me to teach. Should make some reasonable moolah.

OK, three classes to teach. One is entirely online, me and the students can do it in our jammies sipping coffee or whatever. Leaves enough time left over to cook and eat and train. Enough money to live on. Life’s not bad.

Squats today. Since I’m going to put a lot of days between sessions, will get my money’s worth on this:
95 x 20
135 x 10

retching some on the last, but weight felt easy. Injury seems almost entirely healed.

Left lift with DB
20 x 17
20 x 18

Plan: do a little cardio next week, but otherwise take it easy.

Good work in here cavalier! Its nice to have a job that pays the bills and allows a little time for yourself.

Cav,

I just came back from a hiatus and am glad to see you are still at it.

Knock , Knock, KNOCK

Hi, Dude. Sorry about not posting for a while. I’ve been over at another site. No, I haven’t given up on lifting, regardless of how frustrating it gets. Also, been busy at school. Whew! Anyone want to argue teachers are underworked and overpaid, I’ll set them straight real fast.

I do have news! One of the trainers at my gym stopped me and had an offer. You’ve all heard of Westside here in Columbus, I assume. Well, a couple of the guys there broke off and formed their own place. Ludus Magnus (google it) is owned by Matt Wenning - yes, THE Matt Wenning. Hardcore gym. Invitation only. Well, the trainer saw how hard I was working and getting precious little for it. So he arranged for me to get training at Ludus Magnus, was I interested? Was this a trick question?

The place is set in a light industrial part of town. Looks like a machine shop from the outside. Inside, all concrete walls, no mirrors. Clean and well lit. One of the guys, Cory, took right to training me. Determined weaknesses - lower body not bad, hamstrings yech, core decent, upper body bleah. We agreed to a 3 day / week schedule and went at it.

More toys than Santa’s workshop. So far, he’s had me:

  • bench with chains
  • bench with bands
  • bench with bamboo bar and bands
  • pull sled
  • pulldowns with thick bar
  • pulldowns with thick rope
  • kettlebell swings
  • band pull aparts
  • safety bar squat on monolift
  • deadlift for reps

and more, more, MORE!

Have just gone through one month with these guys. Put on 4 or 5 pounds of muscle. Stronger. Conditioning getting somewhere. In a year or so, I might actually be posting decent numbers and will enter another meet.

Sorry about not posting. If you folks like, will get back to it.

You could just cut and paste your workouts from the other site. Not much effort needed. It’s nice to see some of the old faces coming back (what with Git and Kev back this week).

Sounds like you’re making amazing progress.

I’m in and out CAV, not enough time in the day. But looks good.

Wow. Sounds like good fortune is visiting.

I would be interested to see how you progress under supervision/…
