College Jobs

To all the College Students…

Sometimes the good ol’ college job can be one of the best jobs and one of the worst jobs of your life.

So this thread goes out to all the college employees…

I bumped the What Does Everyone Do For A Living thread and it did pretty well…

If you’re in college… What is your job like? Hours? Pay? Demands?

I am currently working on becoming adjuct faculty at my GW to teach a triathlon class.

About $1-2k p/ semester

Teach a 45 min class 2x p/ week

I have two jobs, one is I go to bars and talk to people, for a marketing company, (great way to pickup chicks) pay is around three times minimun and the other is compter techie for my school, pay is around min.

I worked at ShopKo for the first couple years of college. Not bad, but not good.

I also worked in the weight room (basically just sat there so I could call in case of emergency) for minimum wage.

Then I started doing internships. If you’re lucky you can find one that realizes you’re in school, and lets you work accordingly. I’ve made major bucks during summers like this, and also had one during school. That was a nice change from ShopKo

Now I am a research assistent. Pay isn’t great, but I can’t really complain about getting paid for what I need to do to get my degree anyway! Pretty sweet deal actually. And I can still do internships in the summer to boost my income (my professor is cool like that).

A while back I worked at an elementary as a tutor/computer’s instructor and the pay was 10 dollars per hour.

Then I quit and I got a job at my college in the Students Affairs office and that payed 6.75 per hour.

Right now I don’t have a college job and I am happy =D

I was a “bar back” in college. Meaning, I hustled around to keep the fridge stocked, get the bar tenders whatever they wanted, take out the trash, etc. I loved it because even though I was working, I still felt like I was hanging out because I was in a bar. Also, I got a piece of what the bartenders made in tips. So, the more I hustled, the more I got paid in cash.

Beautiful.

I just graduated from univ but when I was in university,
Second year- General Labourer in a drapery manufacturing industry. I had to hammer in the curtain holders. Paid a $ over min.
Third year- General labourer in a shingle manufacturing company. Quit that and joined as a animal care assistant at the university.
Fourth year- Along with my animal care job I tagged on a lab research position.

I interned at two PR firms and worked at a Costco (worst job I ever had). Average pay was about $11/hr. I worked about 30-35 hours a week.

For the summer I’m painting houses. This coming year in college I hope to start my own business. And then I will let my grades slide (even more so) until they kick me out.

I will be a senior next year. I am currently interning at a Credit Union writing claims software. Make $16/hr, 40 hrs a week.

I did that too. A lot of fun. And my friends and a lot of other college students all hung out at the bar. Also, I bartended at restaurant for awhile. Now I’m busing part-time for the summer. Very part-time. Really more of a fill-in. Other than that just training and having fun. And posting here a lot since my girlfriend and most of my friends have real jobs or full-time summer jobs and are busy all day.

Loan Signing Agent (notary public)… varies depending how much I hustle.

[If I really put a lot of effort into I can probably make 100k a year but it would require a lot of driving so I’m waiting till I get a motorcycle. So lets say 1-2k a month.]

I’m a Certified Loan Consultant, Loan processor and underwriter. Also I’m getting my real estate license in Sept. But I’m unemployed cause I’m a bum (other priorities at the moment).

Other ways of making money:

  • Online Poker
  • Selling shit on ebay
  • slanging whatever (sold bootleg sports gear, movies, cd’s)

Money is all around you, all you need to do is take it.

Oh and I was a promoter for 6 different clubs out here in la (lol no you’re not allowed to do that)… I want to try the bar back thing sounds cool.

I’ve been thinking about being a personal trainer…

I’m going into my sophomore year next fall, and right now I’m producing a radio series for NPR. I’ll probably leave when school starts though, I just changed my major from U.S. History to Kinesiology so I have a lot of work to do.

When I was in junior college in the 70’s I worked for the maintenance department on Pensacola Beach. Now before you think it was all sunshine and tourists, what we did was pick up the trash on the beach and clean the public restrooms. Man, have I got stories to tell! Then once a week you had to pull garbage - essentially walk from house to house and change out the garbage bags; this sucked. And a couple of times a week you worked on the garbage truck (the Leach) that emptied the dumpsters on the beach. (Came real close to killing a woman in a dumpster picking out the aluminum cans once). Then you get to hose the maggots out of the truck at the end of the day. Paid $2.25/hr.

currently working an engineering internship for a large energy company. 40 hr a week at $20 an hour.

much better than my last job, where i worked the desk at a residence hall. i could study on the job, which was bitchin, but i worked friday night, which sucked. i also was pulling in a whopping 5.15 an hour.

Security guard for the summer. And sell shit on ebay.

Also tutor, alot.

I work at the school gym. Its a great facility, but the pay isn’t that great but my coworkers are awesome and its convenient for working out. I just workout before or after a shift.
