This is a bit random, but does anyone have experience with healing cold sores? I just started getting them and I don’t know how to stop them.
I believe a diet rich in the amino acid L-Arginine can exacerbate cold sore outbreaks. You can counteract this, if L-Arginine is indeed a culprit, with supplemental L-Lysine, pills and ointments.
Abreva costs an arm and a leg for a tiny little tube but it will make the cold sore go away faster. You only need a tiny drop to cover an active sore.
Abreva is good, as noted above. I also like Peroxyl, it’s a oral hygiene rinse that seems to speed up the healing process significantly. You can usually find it by the mouthwash at the grocery store.

I have the same problem.
Lysine - as soon as you feel the tingle start taking 500-1000mg of lysine every 3-4 hours. You need to do it for a couple of days.
If the cold sores are already out, one of those creams will speed up recovery - plus take some Lysine.
Once you have a dosage sorted out that suits you, the lysine will work everytime - BUT it is best to get into it before they break out.
I have the last little bit of one hanging on my lip right now. Damn little bastards. If someone invented a cure for that damn virus I would pay anything for it!
Lysine and a cream containing Aciclovir is what I do. Eventually you will learn the tell tale ‘tingle’ feeling and know that it is time to dose up on Lysine and what ever else you have. If you feel the tingle, dont wait, do what ever you can then.
The comments about Arginine are right as well. It is important to know this as many protein powders or weight gainers and dosed with extra Arginine. I bought one recently without noticing and within a few days I had a cold sore. A little bit will not hurt you, but I stay away from anything that has added Arginine in it.
Finally, I hope whatever action you were getting from the girl who gave you the virus was worth a lifetime of coldsores.
I just re-read your screen name, so wanted to say that if you did get the coldsore from getting some girl action I hope that you video taped that lesbian goodness and can I have a copy.
A lot of dealing with cold sores is prevention.
You can help your body out by making sure you get lots of nutrients that have anti-viral properties. Things like green tea, garlic and some common cooking spices can help. For example, sage, turmeric/curcumin, coriander and paprika.
You might also want to consider some other items which are immune system boosters. Things such as Astragalus and St John’s Wort may be worth looking into. Be sure to check into their possible side effects and so forth. You could get a tincture and put some in your green tea once or twice a week.
Getting dry cracked lips is certainly a no-no, as it letting your lips get a lot of sunshine. Generally, you can just toss on some SPF-15 or more lip balm and not worry about it.
Stress, in general, such as dealing with large emotional issues is not helpful. Not getting enough sleep can also make you suceptible to an outbreak.
There is a product out there called super lysine plus or something, that has lysine, garlic, echinacea, licorice, propolis and goldenseal. It comes in pills or a similar balm.
Basically, if you don’t have one, you can do this or that from time to time as a preventative. If you do have one, then you’d start popping the pills, dosing up on garlic, cooking with spices and so on…
my friend who gets them often tells me that peanut products cause them the most.

That’s crazy because I chow the pnut butter and I only get them if i’m stressed. Got ot the doctor and get the prescription pills. You fel it coming and you take one or two and the fukers gone ski the next day, then you take one more and you never hear from that bastard again.

I used to get bthese real bad - all the time. Lysine was real helpful. I also took the prescription pills (forget the name) which are good but bad for the liver. However, what helped the most was something you should be doing anyway if your diet is right and that is getting complete protein in your system every 2-3 hours. This way you’re getting your lysine throughout the day and not just when you take the lysine pills. I rarely get them now but if I start to mess up on my diet they come right back.
Abreva and lysine, also a few generic asprin at the first tingle do wonders. and if you actually get one, mash an asprin with a little water and put it on after the abreva. Not sure how the asprin works but my doctor said just do it and has been working for a few years now.
There is new research that indicates NAC, or N-Acetyl-Cystiene will almost completely eradicate most oral blemishes, and as mentioned Lysine is effective as well.
you’d be surprised how many people have this viral disease and are either in denial or just don’t know it. defitely go to the doctor and get a prescription if you can afford it for valtrex or a generic. if not save up money and buy a prescription or have someone buy one for you. all the other posts are spot on.
you can transmit the virus without even having a sore. that suck. there was a product called herp-eeze or something like that which contained a substance called lorreastat. it’s a plant extract. supposedly the fda said the stuff was really bad for the liver. damn hippocrites release all these other drugs that destroy the liver. pisses me off. laters pk

Something like 50-80% of the populace has it, but they are the lucky ones that never express it. A small percentage of folks get active cold sores.
It’s the issue of stress for me. When I take a huge lifting break and go back in - it happens quite frequently. (It’s more my fault, I just jump right back into doing whatever lifting I previously was doing.)
For me - not sure if this affects anyone else, is just more and more sleep. Eating healthy seems to have cut it down. Generally a cold sore appears like I’d say … once every 6 months?
One thing to do is get your Doc to write a perscription for an oral called Acyclovir. I get mine to give me five refills and I keep one on hand at all times. If I feel a tingle, I take them right away.
Also, pay attention to foods you eat that bring them on. I have to stay away from chocolate.
All the other suggestions are good also.

You can’t “cure” a virus. That’s why all those dummies from ACTUP or whatever protesting the government about finding a “cure” for AIDS are really misguided. First, there will never be a “cure” for AIDS, and when was the last time the government developed any drugs that are noteworthy? Private pharmaceutical companies develop 98% of the drugs, and they make no money off AIDS drugs.

Wrong on both counts. You can cure a virus. It’s just hard to find a cure. And the pharmaceutical companies would make a helluva lot of money selling a cure for AIDS.
But I do think it’s true that there are no curable viral STDs at least.
