Coconut, A Great Product.

Cooking with flax oil is a bad idea because it is highly unsaturated and therefore very vulnerable to chemical change. Exposing it to heat will easily alter its configuration, thereby stealing it’s health benefits.

Cooking with ground flax seed is a slightly different story. While high temperatures and harsh cooking methods (like broiling or even baking if directly exposed to radiation), can ruin the oils in the seeds, steaming them is okay. Adding flax seeds to oatmeal or bread dough cooks them via steam.

Hey Grim,

Where’d you get the coconut oil? I’ve been looking around for it (at the grocery store) but they don’t seem to have any…so I’ve just been eating coconuts, which is a bit inconvenient since it requires a hammer.
Just eat them like an apple.

If you do not have time to research it, why would you take it?

Haha, thanks for the tip Zap, I just broke my jaw.

Seriously, I could whip these things against a brick wall and they wouldn’t break.

yeah, researching your nutrition is pretty stupid shit, good call man…i just thought you knew all this based on your years of “studying nutrition, science and much more”

keep showing what an idiot you are

Remember when Rowdy Roddy Piper busted one over Jimmy Snuka’s head?

Good times…

According to this guy’s research, a lot of obesity is caused by vegetable oils. The consumption of saturated fat is actually way down over the past century, but oils has skyrocketed. He sees a correlation there. He also is a big fan of coconuts.

Curious were all the studies are backing up the coconut oil bandwagon. No, linking to weston price or mercola doesnt count as a study.

FYI, I am not saying that they dont exist, just that I am curious to see them.

Does for me!

I don’t think TGR is an idiot, but you’re obviously an asshole. I did have time to look it up and although some sites don’t recommend Flax for cooking some like HealthWatch gave it a thumbs up:

Good Cooking Oils:

canola oil
flax seed oil
peanut oil
olive oil
non-hydrogenated soft margarine
safflower oil
sunflower oil
corn oil

It has also been used as a cooking oil in asian and other cultures for a very long time. HOWEVER!, you must be careful with it since its smoke point is very low (~225 DegF). If it starts to smoke, like any oil, it will break down into free radicals, toxins and other unhealthy nasties. If you use it wisely, alone or in blends, there is nothing inherently wrong with it.

Thanks for the info angel and kruiser.

Exactly. I’ve only used flaxseed oil a few times when I was baking fish in the oven at 175. I don’t think 175 is that bad.

I heard some stuff about it.However,I have also seen a few websites that talk about cooking flaxseed oil on a low heat.I’ve only used it with my fish when I baked it at 175. I don’t think thats really high.Yes,this is the world.I am human, just like you.I don’t think I know it all.

I actually do make mistakes, just like you.Why not bring in the army and Bush and tell the whole world that I’ve used flaxseed oil with my fish before.

Please, enough with the egregious remarks. It’s not my fault. For everything you look up and do “research on” there are four others waiting to debunk it.
getgot211 wrote:

There are websites that say to cook with flax and some that say not to cook with flax.Sometimes people have to grow balls and do things themselves gettogot. Your dad should of taught you that!

Actually, their is some research into it, I know McGill University came up with a MCT blend a few years back that seem quite promissing in its results.

However, the oils were used for cooking and participants were to replace their original cooking oils with the MCT blend and be compared to those who got stuck with their original oils.

Technically, it should work as a more easily burned fat based energy source than standard long chain fatty acids. Of course they are less likely to be stored in adipocytes. However, its not by adding 200 cals of oils that your going to end up burning 700 cals a day.

Its like if you eat a 100 g of carbs from your Captain Crunch, if you switch to 100 g of carbs from steel-rolled oatmeal, you’ll probably end up being leaner in the long run.

As for its link to ‘‘thyroid health’’, I haven’t seen of the sort on PubMed or EMBase.

There are many places where you can get the abstracts to the research that interest you (if you don’t have university/organization access to the full text)

www.pubmed.org
www.embase.com

www.obesityresearch.org
and so on and so forth

PubMed and Embase have between them basically most of the publications from North America (PubMed) and Europe and a good part of the rest (EmBase)

Good point WideGuy. I just don’t see the need for people bashing anothers post with no positive feedback or supportive research.

I just wanted to ask you guys - what time do you take your coconut oil? Do you all have it earlier in the day? Anyone have it before bed?
