So here’s something probably no one on this site has ever seen (except probably Anna). This is a traditional scale used for measuring Chinese herbs. The herbs go on one side, and you slide the dangling weight until it’s level. (Well, actually you usually do it the other way, set the desired weight and then add the herbs until it’s level.) There’s markings on the rod at the top.
That way you can just adjust the lever arm instead of changing the weight.
Random history. Romans had these, and the abacus. I think they originated in Rome and then went to China over the trade routes, but the historical proof is sketchy.

It feels like it took forever to get this one in! Friday we rode out to the in-laws farm and did some work on the big-ass steel building they’re putting up out there. Saturday was a kid birthday party at the neighbor’s house. Then Sunday was some yard work while trying to make up for missed meals and water.
Building was cool, we put up a bunch of side panels and had some proper walls when we were done. It felt like progress.
Party went well too. Kiddo had fun and did great with all the other kids. Including all the stuff like sharing, waiting turns and taking directions from other parents that I was a little worried about. The woman and I had fun BSing with some other adults for a minute too. Then we walked home. Legit.
The woman was walking the dogs this morning and saw two possums laying in the ditch that runs beside the road. She was concerned because one was holding the other and rubbing its back. She said that she thought it was a mother with a sick baby, (“that’s just how I’d spoon my baby!”) she was concerned and called the animal rescue.
They said the possums were probably mating! Ridiculous! Then the woman texted them a few pictures and they didn’t bother to respond. They must have thought someone was messing with them. Absurd!
