Problem is how do you classify acts like …The Ramones into a category like that? [/quote]
I think it’s interesting the Ramones are lumped in here (not bashing Bujo as I agree the Ramones are now considered classic rock)…Yo Momma and Push probably know better than me on this…but I’m believing the Ramones were rebelling against what’s now commonly accepted as “classic rock”.
The self-importance and self-indulgence of the late 60’s and early 70’s motivated the punk scene (e.g. Ramones, Iggy Pop, Stooges). Compare and contrast Zeppelin’s 30 minutes of improvisation during a live version of “Dazed and Confused” with the Ramones 59 second “Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue”. Look at the glitz of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) and their symphonic approach to rock vs. “Beat on the Brat”. The Ramones basically said, 'eff you Jimmy Page and friends…we don’t care how good you can play the guitar, we’re gonna bring back the ferocity of rock and roll AND the simplicity."
What happened (imho) was the last years of the baby boomers liked the punk scene so it was lumped in with classic rock. At least the punk songs that they now throw all over t.v. commercials. The Clash was about as anti-classic rock as you could be, but now Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go are classic rock station staples…
I don’t know…I listen to everything and it’s all good at some time or other…it all comes down to the fact that there’s only a few things rock songs can be about (sex, drugs and other rock songs) and ya only need 3 chords…so…how varied can different genres of rock music really be?

Joey would jump out of his grave if he saw this. Most likely, he would just laugh his ass off.
Wait, little wing the instrumental version by Stevie Ray Vaughn? The one sang Hendrix is the true classic. The lyrics are great on that song.

Hendrix also did an instrumental version. It is far superior to SRV’s, and has the best guitar work I’ve ever heard on a single track. The lyrical version is also good.

Expand your horizons…Jimi wasn’t that good of a guitar player.
Anyone else think Hendrix was kinda the Kurt Cobain of his day? I mean…he influenced the world, wasted what talent he had and then killed himself all over like a 3 year period. Beats working I guess.

“expand your horizons” ? dude are you serious ? jimi expanded the horizon for everyone already. i’ve read about 20 years worth of every guitar magazine on earth and i know one thing: no one on your list of guitar players whom are “better than hendrix” would ever even think to say something like “jimi wasn’t that good of a guitar player”.
not santana. not clapton. not stevie ray. not evh. not billy gibbons. not jeff beck. not pete townsend. not satch. not john mclaughlin. not dimebag. not joscho stephen. not b.b king. not taj mahal. not pat metheny. not robert fripp. not mike stern. not steve vai. not zappa. not nobody. jeeze even jazz changed direction with release of “bitches brew” in 1969 which miles credits to the influence of jimi.

I gotta say that the only one who came close to Hendrix was SRV. That’s it.
I love classic rock, but yes, it does get old. The fact is, the older we get, the older the songs get.
I haven’t seen any songs on any list here that I don’t like, and making a list of favorites would be very hard. Yeah, Stairway should be up there, so should Freebird. I think of all the songs that I want to be the first one to turn my kids on to.
They like some pretty shitty music, but they’re coming around. Some of my favorite songs by favorite bands:
Floyd: Shine on you crazy diamond, In the flesh (both of them) Time
Allman Brothers: Blue Sky, Ramblin Man
The Who: Baba
Beatles: Help
Clash: London Calling
Stones: Sympathy
Aerosmith: Dream On, Jaded
ZZ Top: Tush
Hendrix: His version of All along the watchtower.
Dylan: Knocking on Heavens Door
Eagles: Life in the Fastlane
Simon and Art: (yes, I did) The Boxer
Skynyrd: That Smell, Simple Man
Hank Junior: Country Boy can survive.
SRV: Little Wing
Joe Walsh: Rocky Mountain Way (I live in Colorado bros, it’s a rule)
Rush: Red Barchetta, Spirit of radio
Zep: all of 'em
Bruce: Thunder Road
I love Pantera, but they are not classic, and I was listening to “Cowboys from hell” when I tore my tricep and dropped 415 pounds on my chest, so I have stored them for a while…

Hey, ho, let’s go!
Back to the early days of punk.

Is that an earthquake I’m feeling? Nope…it’s John Bonham rolling over in his grave as he hears Monday Night Football rape his band’s songs at every commercial break…Antoine Barnes has sacked Brady and I’m wondering what Zep song we’re going to hear as they fade to commercial…Dazed and Confused…followed by a Men’s Warehouse commercial and then something with Beyonce…jaysus…is it possible for anyone under…
I don’t know…25…to understand how much it really sucks to have your music used in a commercial let alone as an entire marketing campaign for Monday Night Footbal…omg…now they’re back to the opening riff of Dazed and Confused over a Miller Light promo…I’m vomiting…bad, bad, bad…
I was wrong, the Little Wing Instrumental was SRV. I had heard a different version of it before, so I thought the one that I was referring to was done by Hendrix.
Apparently, SRV even won a Grammy for his rendition of Little Wing. Anyhow, I now can’t call it the best classic rock song ever, since it is not an original. So Highway to Hell is now #1.
