Chemo, Radiation and a Stem Cell Transplant

The rest of my amazon shipment came in today. This includes ESPN’s 30 for 30 dvd set, which I’m stoked on. Doesn’t look like I’m going to have a lot of time to start cracking on them, but I’ll make some time soon. A couple things to address : I’ve picked up 18 credit hours for this semester soooo uhhh I’m going to be pretty busy to say the least. This could mean less posts, we’ll see. Also my friend told me about a website called Khan Academy and it’s a website that can probably help anyone in any class for school. I have not had a real chance to pick through it too much yet, but more on that another time. As many of you may know, I’m a huge Nate Green fan and get emails from him frequently, today he sent me one with some tips on how to improve your life : Link below, all great tips.

Todays training went good, but the gym opens slightly later on weekends. I was able to train at 7 a.m which looked something like this:

Rowing

Gymnastics Work
L-Sit work
Front-Lever work
HSPU work

Like I mentioned in my last post, I’ve decided to start writing out what I have to get done in a precise schedule for the day to come. This has turned out to be extremely beneficial and productive. I’ll often look at my list and realize what I’m supposed to be doing at that very moment and this way I’ll have a good idea on what I’ve gotten done. I had a chance to read yesterdays article and thought it was pretty great, especially for a first article. Definitely worth a read. I said today would be a special post. Todays post is was inspired by something that happened to me a couple days ago in the gym.

As I’m training I see a guy doing the worst and most dangerous rounded back deads of all time. I usually never do this, but thought as a nice enough guy and someone who would rather not see this guy destroy his body I’d offer some quick, very basic help. As it turns out the guy wasn’t very pleased, as if I was trying to make him feel or look like an idiot. I explained to him that although my size and strength is at a beginner level at best, that this was not always the case. I tried to explain to him that I’ve had a recent battle with very aggressive cancer and perhaps I can offer him a couple tips on a safer deadlift. Unfortunately he wouldn’t hear any of it and not that it really upset me, but I was a little disappointed to say the least. There’s nothing wrong with needing or asking for help especially in the world if training or nutrition in this day in age with all the bullshit and misinformation. There’s no shame in not having much of an idea of what you’re doing, but there’s even less in admitting that. It just made me think back to when I first started lifting. People have to remember in most cases everyone starts off small and weak, maybe even worse. Luckly I was able to find someone who was nice enough to take me under their wing and show me the ropes. This may not sound like much, but looking back on it, it meant the world to me and has had a huge impact on my life. I was extremely lucky because I had the right guy to do it. This guy not only taught me everything I needed to know about training and nutrition, but about promoting a healthy, well balanced lifestyle. Whether I had a question about training or school he was always there as a great mentor and a positive influence. Although he might not realize it the guy had and still continues to have a pretty big influence on my life. He’s a great guy, someone I feel privileged to know, have the utmost respect for and will always look up to. He’s a super nice, smart, successful guy who I can always talk to under any circumstances and have him make me feel better. It might not sound like a whole lot, but how many people do you know that you can say that about or can say that they have had that effect of you? probably not many. Let a lone a guy you randomly met at the gym. This guy became my training partner at one point and I looked forward to training with him each and everyday. It was always great motivation, competition and a good learning experience. Unfortunately those days were ended by a run in with cancer, but even being in the hospital, I was able to occasionally talk to him through txt or email and always kept him in my mind, knowing that it would only be a matter of time before we were back at the gym together. I knew that when that day came it would be a great one. Although he’s out of town most of the time for school, it’s always great to talk, hear or see him around. It’s cool to have someone, who when you talk or see them always have nothing but good things to say about everything. All it is, is knowledge, improvement and positiveness. Thanks again Marky. This has effectively turned into a rant, but the point is to realize that helping the small fry out in a simple way can go a long way in the bigger picture. You have to be the right guy to do it and you have to find the right guy to take under your wing, but if you do you could make a profound difference in that persons life in so many positive ways. I’d love to chat more but, my timer just went off. Yes…I’ve resorted to timing out my days. More on that tomorrow. Everyone have a great weekend. Cheers!

“The worst thing I ever did was tell you about that site” - Mark shaking his head, referring to T-Nation when I told him I was doing the V-Diet. A funny moment that I’ll never forget.

How are you finding training in the mornings? Ive never really been a morning person, but its a tempting way to do things.

Funny thing. I blogged about a good friend and mentor of mine that I randomly met at the gym in yesterdays spill. Today I went to the gym and was lucky enough to spot a very athletic looking guy with a great physique who I had never seen in the gym before. I’ve been a member at this gym for quite some time and know a lot of the people in and around the area. Now spending so much time in the hospital and training at various other gyms before I went into the hospital, I realized that new people have joined. Anyways he was sporting an MMA shirt and as he walked by I noticed his calves and the look of the way his arms were positioned with the shape of his back. He had that “combat sports” / “Gymnast” look. So I started talking to him. Super nice guy and it turns out he is into Combat sports and has been for about 10 years or so. I told him a little bit about myself as did he. He told me about his website and gave me his card. His website looks pretty cool and he just started it. It’s called trainlikeasuperhero.com I don’t have a lot of time right now. Well, actually I always have a lot of time going to bed at 8-9 and waking up at 4-5 a.m, but as anyone following knows, I always have my days precisely planned out in order to get as much done as possible. Before I go to bed tonight when I make my list of things to do for tomorrow I’ll be adding to check out his website on my list of things to do. Just from taking a quick glance, I think everyone should go ahead and check it out though. After I check it out, I’ll elaborate on it more.

Todays training looked something like this:

Rowing

Push 5x5 - Increased Intensity

Pull 5x10 - Increased Intensity

Bi’s/Tri’s/Should’s Tri Set x 3 - Increased Intensity/Reps

Training felt good, numbers went up pretty easy and I like where my pressing is going considering I could only press the bar for 3 reps and needed help on the 4th when I first got home. My arthritis in my elbows also feels better than ever. I might Re-Adjust my reps on arms considering heavier weight is no longer bothering me. We’ll see.

As some of you may know, I’ve decided to take on 18 credit hours at school this semester and see what I can get done. My goal is to make deans list with a GPA of 3.8+ damn the standards in the U.S are high. This means dedicating 40 hours a week to school. I want to see if I dedicate 40 hours a week out of 168 if I can do it or maybe even do it with no problem. A friend of mine recommended a sight called “Khan Academy” I think this site could help anyone out in any class. It gives you a sense of a bigger picture so that when you’re thinking deeper you have something to relate back to. Everyone should check the site out. I have trouble finding videos on the main page, but if you use the search function, it’s a great site. If anyone tells me this site’s “Useless” or that it “sucks” uhhh ok? 73,417,951 lessons delivered and it sucks? Whatever you say?

I should probably hop in the shower and start cracking at some Biology though. Post back tomorrow, cheers.

Hi buddy,

Khans academy is great, especially if you ever need to study up on immunology.
Your buddy at trainlikeasuperhero looks a bit skinny, and his site is a bit gimmicky, but good luck to him.

Lol Bird. This man has a physique anyone would envy. When I saw him in the gym he had great definition, density, size, vascularity, athleticism and balance. Not to mention he was what turned out to be a great guy as well. The guy had a realistic, powerful looking physique that screamed Alpha Male. That’s probably the main reason I approached him was just off the vibe he portrayed.

Just posting to say I’m still reading. Too busy to comment, lol. Good shit, though. Keep it up.[/quote]

Zooguido, just you mentioning that you’re still following is what keeps me going. Thanks and appreciate it.

Todays training was strictly gymnastics progressions. The gym didn’t open until 8 today as a result of labour day, so I’m behind on my day.

Training looked like this

Rowing

L-SIT work
Front Lever Work
HSPU work

Like I said, I’m behind on my day and need to go crush some Biology. I’m working on a paper and will post it when I’m complete. I finished reading “The Inspiration of Jimmy V” today and must say this book is truly inspirational. I think I’m going to have to pass this book on and gift it to someone because it means that much to me and I want to share it with others.

Leans Gains diet is going good and I;m really enjoying the results. I will; be posting some pictures by the end of the month. I’ll have a better post tomorrow, promise. Anyways enjoy Labour Day. Cheers!

"I wake up everyday and I have to remember, think and reflect upon 3 things. These 3 things are

-Where I came from
-Where I want to be
-And where I am

These 3 things were inspired to me by Jimmy V. An epic coach who won the first Arthur Ashe Courage award at the 1993 ESPY’s. Jimmy lost his life to cancer shortly after his final speech at the awards. I highly encourage you to watch the video of his speech on youtube if you have the time. At the time he was so weak, he could barely make it to the ceremony. That night Jimmy gave one of the most incredible and motivating speeches of all time. Since then his foundation for Cancer Research has raised approximately 100 million dollars. I now wake up everyday and have to remember where I came from and what I’ve been through. I do this so that I take nothing for granted and remember that just the other day I had the fear of going to bed thinking that if I shut my eyes, that I might not open them again. I then think about where I want to be. This helps me realize what I’m living for. Those first 2 serve me so that I can focus and remember where I am. 80-90% of the time people are focusing on something that happened in the past or something that they anticipate happening in the future. Although reflection and motivation are good, one has to steer away from that as their main topic of thought. By wasting 80-90% of your time thinking about the past and future you miss out on the most important thing of all. Which is the now. Not 5 years ago, not 10 minutes from now, not 100 years from now, but now. This very minute, this very second, this very moment. I have that posted on the back of my door, so that every morning when I wake up and I go to open my door to leave my bedroom I can see it " Where I came from…Where I want to be…Where I am." This way I’ll never lose sight of where I’m headed, for what reason and I’ll know that I can look at myself and be sure that I’m doing everything in my power to make it happen."

Just bought “The Inspiration of Jimmy V” on your recommendation for my Kindle, a little inspiration is just what I’ve been in need of lately. Thanks for the suggestion.

Dont get me wrong, his physique is envieable, but I just think ideally he needs to pack on another 5kg of muscle. Although saying that, photos can be deceiving. He might be bigger than what I thibk.

Yeah, more muscle is always great. Hypertrophy is most likely irrelevant to this guy though. Obviously a plus, but something he’s probably not overly worried about. Just from watching him do some gymnastics work, I could see where his low BF% and weight came into play. Guys core was nails judging by the front lever like moves I saw him doing.

Yer true. And thsts something I would like to get into this off-season. Did you have anyone help you intially with training gymnastics moves, or did you learn just by books?

Todays training was fun. It looked something like this:

Rowing - Increased time, I’ll increase the distance once I’ve reached a desirable time.

Push 5x10 - Increased weight by 5 lbs

Pull 5x5 - Increased weight by 5 lbs

Tri set of accessories…x3

I have to touch on the subject after getting into it about milk with a mutual friend the other day. I think it’s important that we look beyond macronutrients and calories. Although they’re both important in regards to protein synthesis, anabolism, anti catabolism, muscle building, body composition and a number of other factors, I think there’s more. Anyone who’s in this thing for real is focused on what I call the “Bigger Picture” This means considering more than “muscle” this means health, longevity and promoting a healthy, positive and well balanced lifestyle. For example Chocolate Milk post workout may be great macro wise.

Ideally it has carbs:protein ratio in an approximate 2:1 ration of 30:15g, which is the recommended quantity per hour of activity. It also provides Calcium and taste great. This is good news, but be careful. Milk is contaminated with things like hormones, antibiotics, germs, bacteria and is a pretty unethical practice in health standards regards. I’m not here to get into a “Milk Debate” I’m just saying it’s good to get different views, different sources, take different opinions into account and learn how to properly consider and analyze things.

That was the quote I posted yesterday at the end of my post. This is something that I told a friend. It’s very important to remember those 3 things and spend a little time each day, thinking, reflecting and appreciating them. I woke up today and rolled out of bed, I then faced my closed door as usual. I keep my door closed at night because I’m insanely irritable and need complete darkness, I appreciate good, quality sleep. I also do this for 2 main reasons. 1 so that I can face that closed door in the morning and remember how lucky I am to have that privelage to leave that room. I then look at that piece of paper and think briefly but hard about Where I came from, Where I am and Where I want to be. This will help me and remind me what to work on and what I;m working towards. It serves as a reminder and motivation. Everything starts with a goal, then comes the assessment, then comes the plan, then last but not least comes the action. I encourage everyone to do the same. I talked about periodization and how I love to study the genius methodology and practice of program and training design. I talked about how I’ve token this a step further and I’ve decided to incorporate this into my life a whole. On the back of that same piece of paper it reads “Periodization of Life” - Chapter 1, Fall 2011. I then have my goals a 3.75 GPA, 40 hours a week to school, Lean Gains Diet and my commitment to improving myself as much as possible in every way, each and every day. I know that if I do this and stay faithful to my commitments that’s going to be one hell of a rewarding success.

My alarm went off late so I’m behind. Not much time to post, so I’ll post back tomorrow. Cheers.

Glad to hear it Phlegms. You won’t regret it. Anyone can benefit from Jimmy, his book or his speech.

Rainy days piss me off. Although they don;t get me down I hate waking up to a shitty/rainy day. It might not really technically effect me, but it’s something that subconsciously, whether I want it to or not does have an effect on me. It’s like taking off the ground explosively with a snatch and having your back slightly round, no matter how much you tell yourself not to let your body do it. Woke up early and was at the gym by 5. Today I just did some gymnastics work and for the first time felt kind of sloppy on it.

My lower back was bothering me a bit, just wasn’t getting the leverage that I usually do. I had to focus on keeping my legs STRAIGHT. Almost straight and straight are 2 very different things. One = increased leverage drastically, the other has you screaming in agony counting out a mere 6 seconds. I can honestly say for the first time that I was contemplating my commitment to the gymnastics work. I have to remember that this is going to take time and that it will pay off.

Gymnasts learn these moves over years we’ll gradually adapting from very low BW’s. To hop out of a hospital bed, weak and out of shape at a moderate weight and to expect to have that kind of strength and skill is absurd. This doesn’t mean I’m going to completely re-evaluate my goals of doing an L-Sit or Front Lever by New Years, but I do know that this isn’t going to be easy and after today have realized it might be hard to put a time frame on these gymnastics goals.

I have not read the articles for this week yet, but do intend to catch up on them. Although I love reading to learn, I also feel reading for inspiration and enjoyment plays a big part in that learning process. I will be setting away sometime to get some pleasurable reading done. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but sometime soon.

That picture is from a parking garage where I park at school sometimes, depending on where I’m headed on campus. Directly across the street from it is a part of the “Karmanos Cancer Institute” I have to look across the street and remember sitting inside that place what seems like just yesterday. Almost makes me cringe, but at the same time makes me happy and driven.

Yesterday was the first day of one of my Kin classes. In this class we’ll be taking a number of trips to locations that are very close to campus. This will include the exercise physiology labs of a lot of great institutes like the “Henry Ford Medical Centre” and the “DMC” or “Detroit Medical Centre” The good thing about Wayne State is that it’s attached to what I would call a “Medical City” consisting of about 15 major institutions all located as a part of campus.

We’re going to go there to meet some of the people that work directly with some of the local professional sports organizations such as the Detroit Red Wings (NHL), Lions (NFL), Pistons(NBA) and Tigers(MLB) so it should be pretty cool.

If anyone’s tried or knows anyone who’s tried the “Lean Gains” diet protocol I;d love to hear comments. If not, even just some opinions. I have to say that I am a fan and have committed to sticking to this approach to give it a fair judgement and assessment. I’m more curious to see what people where eating we’ll they did it. I don;t know how much I should push it. I have been taking in more carbs than usual, but nothing that’s pure “junk” I’ve simply worked out of those habits. I’m just wondering what a typical meal for someone might look like or whether it’s a free for all after your fast. I’m not looking for any excuses to pig out, but I still find myself being pretty strict and maybe stressing what I chose to eat a little too much.

Anyways, I’ve got to go head off to school and get some serious reading in. I can probably make it home by 2ish today and have some free time around 3. I’d like to be able to get some personal reading done at that time. In order to do that I’ll have to throw 3-4 hours at school right now and 1-2 later. Everyone have a great day and don’t let that rain get you down. Cheers.

Are you doing “lean gains”? Im thinking about trying it out, but Im not sure how I will go with fasting in the morning until 12. I usually have had 2 substantial meals by then.

Yes Bird I am doing “Lean Gains” just started last week, this is week 2. I was on your typical 6 meal a day plan, but have found no problems with Fasting until noon. It depends on your situation though. For me, I wake up, train, head to school, go to class and pretty much don;t even have time to have eaten before noon. It’s really no struggle for me…it’s actually ideal

I tried lean gains for a month or two and enjoyed my time with it. I didn’t make huge gains in terms of mass from it but I definitely leaned up some whilst eating a large calorie surplus. I also found it to be a meal timing pattern that just really suited me and it definitely helped curb my appetite.

Unfortunately my schedule got really awkward this summer so I couldn’t follow it as I would have liked so I had to drop it. I will, however, definitely return to it in a few months when I try to drop some body-fat before the end of the year to do some “damage-control” after my bulk.

That’s exactly it for me phlegms. I never ran it in the summer either. I guess I didn’t even know about it, but it would have been terribly inconvenient with all the spare time on my hands. It just so happens that it suits my schedule for school to a tee. It’s simple, convenient and shocked to say…easy? Diet for the first time…easy? That sounds weird. Keep following phlegms. Feel free to post any questions or random thoughts as well. If you got any posts going I’d love to jump in as well. I’ve got a post going called “Switching the Stimulus” that is taking off. If you want to elaborate on your training, feel free to post over there. Later.

Today was one of those days that just got off to a great start. Woke up at the exact right time effortlessly, hit the gym right on time, great workout, saw a good friend and am feeling great. Todays training went something like this:

Rowing : Great way to burn fat, maybe build or promote muscle growth, warm up and fun as hell

Push : 5x5 - Increased weight by 5lbs

Pull : Increased weight by 5lbs

Accessory Tri Set

“Daryls all Natural Bar” a nice little treat for when I’m on the go. A delicious granola/protein bar with no sugar and loads of protein. They’re great to bring with me in my bag to school and taste awesome. I’m noticing some followers and just want to say I appreciate it and encourage you all to keep following. If any of you have any posts/logs let me know so I can jump in. It’s not too often I get the chance to really talk training/nutrition in depth in this log, so I would like to gear more towards that if possible.

Today I ran into a friend at the gym. His names Shawn, world record bench press holder. Anyways, he works with some kids, including his son who can bench 275 ish at age 13 btw. He’s always offered me to jump in and join him when he benches on Sundays. I think I might just take him up on the offer now that I’m not struggling to rep the bar for 3 reps. I now feel safe and comfortable on the bench press and it’s sunday, so I might as well go and see what he has to offer. At the very least I’ll gain some kick ass bench tips, some coaching tips, advice and methods and get to hang out with a great group of guys. Only good things can come out of it and it really is a great opportunity that shouldn’t be token for granted. People always assume people that are close to them or that they have access to arn’t “so special” of take them for granted. That same guy could call you up and be like “Hey man I’m Joe Dick from (some place really far away) and I train so and so” and you’d be all over them. I can appreciate what this guy’s done and have a lot of respect for him as well. Just the fact that he’d offer to help me put, knowing my situation is something that I already can’t turn down. It will give me something to look forward to at the end of the week and be a nice little treat. This will not be affecting my normal training and is not something that I’ll be overly concerned about. This doesn’t mean I’m not going to take it seriously, but I have no intent on becoming a “Powerlifter” or competing in powerlifting. I just figure Bench Press is a staple and my only real resistance exercise besides my pull, so getting my numbers and technique up won’t hurt. I’m psyched up for the environment and hope I can offer some motivation, inspiration or just contribute anything to the situation.

Todays an early ass day at school, so I’ve got to be on my way. It’s about 6:45 right now, I;m going to hop in the shower and try and catch up on some reading before my ride gets here at 8ish. Have a great day, cheers!

My friend told me about Seth Godins blog. Havn’t looked through it a whole lot, but as far as I can see looks interesting and insightful. Will be attempting to follow and read. Check it out. Here’s a small clip from his site.

Not muh time to post today, have to catch a ride to school a little early in order to car pool. Todays training was just gymnastics training and went something like this:

Rowing

L-Sit work

Front Lever work

HSPU work

I encourage everyone to go jump in on my switching the stimulus thread. There’s some good comments over there and would be serious to hear different views and opinions.

On a side note : Nutrition is a lot harder of a class than first thought. Almost a different language with all the (ABCD) abbreviations for agencies and government people. Tomorrow’s Saturday and I’m going to continue to wake up early in the weekends to catch up on both school work and personal things. I’ll post back tomorrow with a lot more to say. For now, just appreciate the fact that its FRIDAY!
