So are you not going to deadlift at all?

No sir. If my squat is hovering around the low to mid 5’s I should have all the strength I need to pull 600. I just need to be able to hold onto it. My goal is to squat 550 with wraps at the competition. I hit 500 easy tonight.
Easy 500lbs Squat w/wraps
First video I’ve done with commentary. Let me know what you guys think.
I hit a pretty comfortable 500lbs squat Wednesday night. I think there was a bit more in the tank. I switched to a new pair of longer wraps, so they’re going to need some breaking in.
“How to Squat” tutorial/information video
So guys I made a little squat tutorial video. It runs kind of long so if you want to skip around or whatever check out the description on YouTube, I left a breakdown of what’s what on there. Other than that please let me know what you think. What did you like or dislike about my style of explaining things? Were you captivated by what I was saying or bored shitless? Did you enjoy it, or find it informative, or whatever. Any feedback I get will help me with future videos that I make.
And if you feel so inclined please share the video and subscribe to my channel!
Thanks guys.
515lbs Wrapped Squat PR @ 156lbs
Grinded out a big squat last night, 515lbs. It was a tough one, but I fought through it. I think it might have been the new slowest squat of my life haha. It took over 7 seconds from start to finish. It’s interesting squatting with the wraps because you get that bit of extra pop out of the hole, but then the wall you hit at the sticking point is enormous. Something I’m still getting used to. My upper back is getting strong though. I never fold over anymore. Still gunning for 550.
First Time Trying New Squat Stance - 505lbs @ 157
I watched a video of Malanichev yesterday and something possessed me to pull my stance out a little bit. I’ve never squatted with a stance outside of shoulder width until yesterday, and while it felt weird and very, very different, I think that it could possibly be the way to go to take me to the next level. I can’t really feel the movement right now though, and so I wanted to get some opinions on the depth. Not the best angle I know, but what do you guys think?
Max Out On Squats Every Day
Made a new vid detailing how to go about squatting to max every day. Let me know what you think!
Triple bodyweight squat for a triple (475lbs x 3)
Hit some pretty good squats on Saturday. Had to go back to my old stance because the wide stance aggravated an old hip injury of mine, but oh well. I worked up to 505 for a single, and then hit 475 x 3, which is a PR triple by 10lbs. After that I went outside and hit some pretty solid vertical jumps. I’m looking to get my vertical up over 40" again.
Switching to Strongman!
Sike, but that wide stance squatting aggravated the fuck out of my hip so I can’t pull from the floor at the moment. I can squat through the pain but it just re-aggravates it, so I’ve decided to take the next couple weeks off from squatting so that I can hit it hard in the last month leading up to the comp.
This led me to try my hand at the 18 inch deadlift, a contested lift in Strongman competition. This is the first time I’ve ever tried it and I managed a terrible, god-awfully ugly 650. Still it was cool to move that much weight. My goal is to get a feel for it over the next 3 weeks and try to pull 700, then I will resume my regularly scheduled training.
PS. if anyone is wondering, the single strap on my left hand that I use up to 550 is because I ripped half my hand off last Sunday doing heavy static holds.
Block Pull 545lbs x 3 & 100lbs Weighted Box Jump
I’m still feeling out the pain in my hip so my range of motion is pretty limited at the moment, but at least I can pull heavy off blocks. I mostly just wanted to get some work in from the sumo stance since it how I plan to pull 600 when I go for it. I’ll see if I can’t add a couple of inches to the it next week by standing on some boards. As you can see, my hands are still torn up so I’m forced to use the straps to hold onto anything substantial at the moment. I’m hoping they’ll be healed up enough by Sunday that I can get back to doing my heavy static holds.
I also tried weighted box jumps for the first time ever since it was raining and I couldn’t jump outside. The box I was jumping onto was only 20 inches, but I ended up wotrking up to a single while holding a pair of 50lbs dumbbells, so I thought that was pretty cool. Not sure if this exercise actually has any value or not lol.
555lbs low block pull + 315x15 stiff leg DL
My hip is starting to feel a bit better. I managed to pull from about 4 inches lower than what I did last week, just below my knees. This is actually my weakest point in the conventional deadlift and I have always been able to pull more from the floor than from this height, so this a pretty good sign of things to come when I’m fully healed.
I also managed to pull semi-stiff legged from the floor after this. I did 3 sets of 10 and finished off with this last set of 15. I probably could have gone heavier but I resisted the urge because there was really no point. I still can’t pull properly from the floor without pain, but I’m hoping I will be able to in the coming weeks. The sumo posiition (which is how I will pull in comp) doesn’t aggravate the hip anymore either. So now the question is, how will it hold up when I’m pulling on 600lbs? Only time will tell.
As of now, I still plan to hold off on squatting again until the first of November, but I will probably add an inch or 2 to the range of motion of these pulls for the next couple weeks. Then come November I likely won’t deadlift again until the competition.
Still forced to use straps in all pulls because my hand is still shredded.
10 Minute Deadlift Challenge: 405lbs for 48 reps
I couldn’t resist the lure of the BodybuildingRev 10 minute deadlift challenge. I ended uppulling 405lbs for 48 reps in 10 minutes. No straps, no touch and go, just a belt. My goal was 50 going into it. I ended up attempting 49 lifts but missed one at lockout. 48 isn’t bad though. Let me know what you think.
485lbs Squat After 3 Week Hiatus
Finally back to squatting again. I took 3 weeks off because that one wide stance session I experimented with absolutely destroyed my hip and I just needed to give it some rest. I managed to hit 485, but my technique was a little bit off after that break and I think I cut it a bit high. I can’t quite tell where the hip crease is because the sweats, but it felt high. Also, I kept getting pulled forward which almost never happens to me. I came up on my toes on the 455 before this but was able to bully it back into position. Then I took 485 and basically just fell on my face the first attempt lol. I took it again and focused on keeping my chest up and managed to stand up with it. Other than that I did some sit ups and some vertical jumps, and my legs are sore as hell even though I basically did almost no volume. Here’s to picking things back up again.
Made a follow up video to my first video about how to build up to squatting heavy every day. This one goes into a little bit more detail about 2 of the concepts that I use to guide my own daily squatting adventures. Let me know what you think.
525lbs raw w/wraps squat @ 157lbs
The increased squatting frequency is finally starting to pay off. I hit 515 and 525 easily on Tuesday. With my ability to grind I’d say I left 10-15lbs in the tank. I wish I had loaded the bar to 530 instead. But 525lbs is still a 10lbs PR. Now I just need to focus on increasing the quality of the lifts at his weight, because they were a little high. I had never wrapped the wraps this tight before and the stopping power kind of amazed me. I actually bruised hamstring tendon on the back of my right thigh lol.
Easiest 505lbs squat of my life tonight. Based on my grindability (I’m copyrighting this word), I would guesstimate that I left about 20-30lbs in the tank. Kaboom.
First PL Comp: 1300 raw total @ 148
Well, I fell short of my goal of 1400. I had wanted to go 550/300/550, but I ended up with 525/275/500. I had a shot at 550 on my 3rd deadlift attempt, which would have given me 1350, but the injury I’ve been fighting through and the fact that I was so out of practice on the movement just made it so I couldn’t finish the lift. For reference, my best triple is 550.
I’m pretty happy with my squat, which I believe is something like #8 on the all time list, but I know I’ve got a lot more in me. My next goal is to hit 550 and then beat Rickey Dale Crain’s 565 squat from the 70’s.
For now though, my main focus will be the bench while I let my glute heal up, and then when I’m healthy I will finally pull 600. Next time I compete, probably sometime in mid to late 2015, I will total 1400. There’s a lot more there for me. But overall I really enjoyed my first competition and I’m pretty happy with how things turned out.
New video- my biggest pet peeve: “when is it going to get easy?”
Just made a new video on my channel, mostly geared for novices but could end up being a kick in the butt for some intermediate lifters as well. It talks about my biggest pet peeve, which is when people ask me “when is it going to get easy?” Which leads me to touch on the topic of progressive overload. Let me know what you think. Also, please share it if you feel so inclined or think it will be helpful for someone you know.
I liked it man! Keep them coming
great thread, definitely going to keep following this one. great work, amazing progress.
