This is the perspective of most Mexicans, and doggie has it backwards.

The real issue here is that the term Hispanic was a recent development in attempts for those from Mexico to disown or disavow their Spanish roots. At least this is how many Mexicans view the issue. So saying you are Hispanic really is saying that you are of Mexican Indian (Mayan, Aztec, etc) decent without influence of those nasty Spanish who conquered Mexico years ago.

No. You’re wrong. Wikipedia has it correct. Hispanic is the equivalent of saying Spanish.

I assure you that your explanation of Hispanic is the exact OPPOSITE of how it is used down here. Down here Hispanic is used by those who don’t want to be considered Mexican. It is used to distinguish themselves from “common” Mexicans–those that are a mix of Spanish and the native Mexican Indians.

Therefore they call themselves Hispanic (Spanish) instead of Mexican or Latino (which is never really used around here).
In fact, the only time Latin is used is in LULAC–League of United Latin American Citizens. Its use sounds as strange as Colored People in NAACP.

And if you asked what type of Spanish they spoke, they’d say Tex-Mex.

Doogie, sounds like you are arguing just to argue. I have relatives in Juarez and El Paso and that is not how my family or any of my relatives view it. Also, go to New York and see what the people say there and it will be Latino. These are people from Puerto Rico and other non-Mexican countries. So the idea of Latino being synonymous with Mexico and Indians (who did not have a Latin based language) is a little off.

But hey, if the people you know feel better being called Hispanic, more power to them.

I’m sure Mexicans in Mexico (Juarez) don’t use Hispanic. If your relatives in El Paso came from Juarez, I’m sure they don’t either. They aren’t in the majority down here, though.

A poll (admittedly for Hispanic Magazine):
http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:zJaGSYpkQEYJ:www.hispanicmagazine.com/2000/dec/Features/latino.html+Latino+vs+Hispanic&hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&strip=1

Of the 1,200 Latino registered voters polled, 65 percent preferred the term Hispanic, and 30 percent chose to identify themselves as Latino. Regionally, the results were similar. This random sample showed that 67 percent of Mexican Americans in Texas preferred the term Hispanic, as did 52 percent of Latinos in California and New York.

From SOA Watch:
http://www.soaw.org/new/article.php?id=830

The category term of Hispanic was first used in the l980 Census and caused uproar among Latinos in the Southwest, Chicago and New York but accepted in Texas, and Florida…
…It is said that those who prefer the term Hispanic are usually middle class, educated in the United States and tend to oppose affirmative action and bilingual education.

I said it was a REGIONAL thing. In Texas, Hispanic is used to contrast with Mexican. New York is a different region.

I KNEW IT ! ! !

Saying liberals are racist is… well… stereotyping!

You big bad stereotyping conservative basterd!!!

Seriously… Democrats = tools. Republicans = tools.

The whole system is fucked up. Buth sides are downright retarded. It’s come down to who you think is the lesser of two evils, instead of who you agree with more.

And of course, the northern part of the country is obiously the racist part (haha).

I’ve been to Georgia… and had my head “checked for horns” by an eight year old… I’m pretty sure Georgia is a Red state…

Not saying all Southerners are racist, but a majority of racist Americans live in the Southern states. I mean common… HORNS!!! I Was freakin pissed off! Three kids were agreeing with him too… Makes me shake my head in sadness…

The adults were a bit more subtle, but very few of them wereopenly warm with me. Later I found out the kid who originally asked me was the son of the principal of the school I had been visiting (where my little cousin attends).

While I’m not politically correct in the slightest bit, being asked if I had horns, I assure you, hurts a bit more then someone telling me I should be good with money, or that I’m probably cheap.

(If you didn’t pick up on it, I’m Jewish).

I don’t, for even a second, believe this story.

Then you’re a fool. I can direct you to a very sizeable message board of people who still think that Jews are involved in ritual murder. And by the way, those anti-Semites [okay, skinheads] also are against the new Survivor show because they think it’ll be biased against the white [or, “white”] tribe.

While I don’t browse the skinhead message boards and don’t have your up to date knowledge on their feelings on pop culture, I did grow up in the South.

There are no commonly held mis-beliefs about Jews that any 8 year old (much less three) are going to be expressing in school. Certainly no one thinks they have horns. The South is domninated by Southern Baptists waiting on the Rapture. They are the Jews biggest fans.

Of course, the most disgusting racism I’ve ever witnessed was while going to college in southern Illinois, so I can understand your willingness to believe this ridiculous story.

If you think Southerners don’t hold stereotypes about Jews, you don’t have my up-to-date knowledge about much of anything.
