COLUMBIA, S.C. - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him “constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil.”
He better set the same standard to all taxpayers, then.

This is not the Catholic churches teaching - even though it should be.
Where´s the problem?
Shameful. Turn the other cheek, judge not less ye be judged, those without sin…

Not to mention separation of church and state
Well, any thread or talk about a Catholic priest nowadays will be viewed with disdain immediately. Even I am guilty of thinking … what hypocrisy is this? They are just so unfortunately, forever tarnished. Like anybody hears of muslims they think of suicide bombings and religious mania, the person now thinks of Catholic priests as molestors of boys. There is truly nothing sacred anymore. Nothing beyond killing or disgust, no religion. How does one keep the faith? Any faith at all. They are all filthy. No prophets to believe in, no clear road to travel that isn’t fraught with the bones of the murdered or cries of the children.
I am not an atheist. I am a person who refuses to follow the sickened ways of man, man who claims to follow god yet pollutes his path with the bodies of the innocent and cries out for money. Every church in these lands are infected. They are zombies of weakness and hate. I refuse to follow them. That goes for religions in every land that stretches across this universe. I have forsaken you all. Yet, I am not godless. I have not closed eyes …I feel the wounds and I cry for the souls. I have more compassion and more god in my veins than your hateful religion allows. I can hear the children without them speaking. I have no fear of my afterlife …for I know I can communicate just the same, with no words. I have learned how. Floating and bodyless I can lead. A third eye sight. Opened. Universe…broken.

How is that not the issue? Not your opinion? Sure, but separation of church and state is exactly the issue. I am strongly against abortion but if I were to go to church and heard my Priest talking politics and/or trying to influence the way I think(politically) by telling me Im going to Hell(God knows the Church would never do that) I would walk out.
Im not there to talk Politics, I’m there to worship God. But I can just as easily do that at home.
No wonder less and less ppl are going to church

Congress cannot establish a religion and you are free to worship whomever you want.
There´s your separation of church and state.
If a priest tells you not to vote for someone how acts against catholic doctrine, that is perfectly fine.
If you do not like it, find another church, that would also be perfectly fine.
Nothing new, really. In the old days in Ireland, it’d be the priests who led public opinion in all aspects of daily life. Parishioners were told who to vote for all the time.
Still, in this day and age it’s a bit too much. I think they’re just trying to radicalize themselves in order to combat the rise of other fundementalist faiths.
Orion nailed separation of church and state.
"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should “make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” thus building a wall of separation between Church & State
People using separation of church and state have referenced the last part of the quote and opinion without even looking at the context to which it was intended.
I would prefer that from the pulpit, that a preacher would present the facts before, and encourage prayer and action thereafter. Receiving Holy Communion at that time is most important, not withholding it.

This is not the official position of the Catholic church.
Here is a quote from Ratzinger when he was still a Cardinal:
“At the same time, he said it is not necessarily sinful for Catholics to vote for politicians who support abortion, as long as they are voting for that candidate for other reasons.”
When he made this statement he was the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This position is resposible for defending and reaffirming Catholic doctrine.
bpeck
eh- who cares what this priest thinks/says?
If he was using ‘separation of church and state’ in a more general way, as in a person not liking the idea of a priest talking politics at church, then I can understand that.
But as has been stated before, this is not the typical separation of church and state that we are better acquainted with (the one Jefferson was referring to in his letter)
What’s ironic is that if a person brought suit against this priest for his comments and asked a court to intervene, THAT would be separation of church and state because the government could not step in and dictate the types of sermons that can be conducted in church.
Even as someone who really dislikes organized religion, i’d be fundamentally opposed to that idea.

I hate it when people take these type quotes out of context. And money is evil, so you should give yours away if you’re Christian, right?
There is a huge difference between judging actions and judging people. You are supposed to judge actions. EX: “Sex for money is bad, so I’m going to stay away from whore houses.” What you aren’t supposed to do is judge and sentence a person for their actions. EX: “You had sex with someone for money, so you are going to hell, and I?m not going to speak to you any more, and you have to pray for forgiveness.”
In the end, they believe communion is a holy sacrament from God that you aren’t allowed to take if you have sins on your heart. If he believed voting for Obama a sin, he had the duty to advise his parishioners of that. I don’t think that in any way constitutes a violation of anyone in any way. It is voluntary attendance and tithing.
I personally don?t agree with him, and would probably look for another church if that was where I went. I would be surprised if they don?t lose money and people over this.
For some reason people today confuse PC with legal/illegal. People are allowed to say things that piss off others, and no, that doesn?t violate your rights. Why is it people think it?s somehow okay to insult someone for the inherited size of say, their nose, and illegal if you include the shade of their skin? They are both equally stupid and legal.

Ummm, I’d stay away from those occasions of sin too…but who was That One Guy hanging around with again?

Then it should be equally ok, according to your way of thinking, for us to denounce him for trying to use his influence to coerce his parishioners into voting a certain way or to feel guilty for having made a certain choice.
After all, nobody is saying the Priest should be imprisoned.
