Car Camping in Utah

I’m seriously thinking about working overtime the rest of the month, then disappearing into southern Utah until June for hiking, fishing, and camping.

I don’t want to use a tent, I have fold-down seats in the Jeep and will sleep in the back. I’ll get one of those tent things that extend from the open doors for daytime use, but I most definitely want to be able to crawl inside and sleep within the perceived safety of locked doors and metal.

My two questions:

  • Any campground recommendations for southern Utah?
  • I’ve never camped out of my car before–does anyone know if an RV campground will generally allow a car to be parked/used on the site instead of an RV? I don’t want to have to call and preplan every place I stop.

I lied, I have one more question: Anyone know of some places in south Utah that I can just drive the Jeep to, stop for the night, and camp right there, no hassle, no fees, etc?

Disclaimer: I am not trying to freak you out or anything, just relaying a story.

I knew a guy who was driving from Texas to California and decided that one night he was going to stop in the middle of the desert and take on of those cool pictures where you leave the shutter open while pointing it towards the night sky. He went to his car to wait while the picture was going on and ended up falling asleep. At the end of the trip he got his pictures developed and there were about a dozen pictures of him in his car sleeping that night, even a few with the door open and in the car and whatnot.

You really have two choices…the national parks around Moab and those around St. George.

I would recommend Moab as it is much more jeep camping friendly.

I will assume you have a decent amount of experience camping, hunting ect and have put some thought toward safety etc.
