In 14 months I’ll have my B.S.C.E. in the belt.

I enjoy Engineering and have a panache for math.

As I moved closer to a Structural focus I moved further from the few gorgeous honeys in the program. I finally realized I’m in the middle of a friggin sausage fest.

I instantly recognized the genius of Medicine students. You get a great career surrounded by scores of cute skirts.

I finally realized - trees, animals, and money. That’s where they all are. Business and Biology careers. Pushing paper and saving animals.

It seems all the honeys in C.E. are going for the Environmental focus.
Any fellow C.E.'s who can corroborate my case?

PE and SE here.

There are a few (very few) women in structural engineering, some cuties but they are few and far between…
occasionally there is a cutie in the architect’s office, or in the developer’s office, sometimes even the contractor’s office, but those times are rare enough that every guy in the room perks up like a dog hearing the mailman.

Be sure to get out, go to the gym, bars, take public transportation, or you risk getting “Engineer Goggles” where your standards get skewed by deprivation.

Welcome to the sausage fest!

I’m a Civil PE with 8+ years in general civil consulting.

First of all, “honeys in engineering” yeah right. From my experience the more attractive ones are in Environmental, and some in Transpo, but practicing engineers are 90%+ male.

14 months to go, it’s not too late to change majors. Seriously, use this summer to do a coop/job shadow. Take a low wage job at a firm to see what Structural and Environmental are all about. It might surprise you.
If you’re thinking of Environmental, you might also ask to visit your local Department of Natural Resources (or whoever reviews environmental plans in your area).

Stay away from state and public agencies, they will suck the life out of you. They might be OK for later in your career.

Also, if you want the opportunity to try different things, don’t get too tied down with women. You won’t have the opportunity to find your niche if you can’t move around some. Aim high, try to get in on some big projects, work your arse off until you get your PE. Then settle back in your niche, and enjoy life.

I am a Chem E but I my work is mostly Civil/Environmental and you are right, there are almost no females in the industry.

I appreciate the efforts the department is making to recruit female students.

I sometimes if they’re led by some hornball tired of the sausage fest - guy’s my hero anyway!

I’m not an engineer, but I play one at work. I work in oilfield construction, and I know of one company, a customer of ours, that hires lots of women engineers. These are mostly MEs, but there are a lot of them there. Suprisingly, there are quite a few of them that are good looking.
