I like my Ruger. The main negative concern is that is bulky to carry. It is a 45.

Good for you, yea i mean you got a decent deal on it and i guess its good if you just wanna put some lead down the range…but like others said, if you want a legit gun, just start saving and get the right one…I have always big a Sig guy when it comes to handguns but thats just me, everyone has their own preferences and likes/dislikes for every gun and every caliber…but! i will say, i also agree with MapWhap in terms of getting nothing smaller than a .40 cal, i mean if you wanna put someone down, a 9mm just not gonna do it, way to high velocity and small round…a .40 or .45 will put em down
You don’t think a .357 magnum would suffice? Yeah, yeah it only has 6 shots, but for a house gun that should be enough (or so i’d think)
Taurus also makes 8-shot .357 revolvers.
Or you could get a semi chambered for this round (SigP226, etc. which can hold up to 14).
.357 Sig is a different round than .357 magnum, and less powerful. Hot loaded 10mm is more in line with .357 magnum.

Yes, i guess in the end just keep your shotgun at the ready with the 00 chambered!
Birdshot. You don’t have to worry about shot placement, knockdown power, OR accidentally killing your neighbor.

Birdshot is for birds, and you still have to aim.
Yea birdshot is weak haha Buckshot has about 9 pretty big shots and the spread is significant especially if you dont have too tight of a choke on your gun, but for home defense Buckshot is where its at…than again you can always load up with some 3inch .50cal Slugs = )
Ruger p95 is ok for shooting practice etc, dunno what the current situation with 9mm ammo is though.
back when I stocked up on the 40s (about a year ago) it was nowhere to be found around here.
As for the “stopping power” - my 2c - caliber makes a huge difference.
It’s better to have a 9mm (or a 22 even lol) on you than nothing at all though.
Being an EMT, I can assure all of you that a 9mm will kill someone just as well as a .40 or .45 will.

I read somewhere that .22 kills more people each year than any other round, I’m pretty sure that stat might be inflaited due to AD and kids using them for uneducated “fun”.

Not to mention the issue of over-penetration in a home-defense scenario, although this may be avoided with hollow points.
On the other hand, 9mils are said to be large enough to cause hydrostatic shock just as much as .45’s.
I guess in the end it all boils down to what gun you are most comfortable using, since simply owning a pistol makes you about as much armed as owning a guitar makes you a rock star.
I’ve shot them both, and I can definitely see that a smaller/weaker person might want a 9 mm over the .45.
Beretta’s 9mm was really nice, light, and fired very smoothly and accurately. I liked it alot. But I shot the 1911, and besides being heavier, which I liked, the trigger had a lot less play in it and you could “feel” the power a little more.
Plus, looking at the holes they create in a target… I know which one is more likely to stop a guy.
Believe it or not i hear that 9mm are more likely to go right through a target and not bring them down- not the .45.

Totally see that.
All this talk has me wanting to renew my quest for the perfect 10mm.

Birdshot has just as much mass and force as the buckshot rounds you’re talking about–out of the barrel. Sure there’s no range–but there doesn’t have to be. How often in home defense are you going to be blasting at someone more than a room away?
As for aiming–well, you do have to point it in the right direction, true.

The thing is you can’t plan a gunfight before it happens, so you must choose your equipment based on the greatest potential to be successful. In this case it would be permanently stopping the threat before you or anyone else are harmed.
Buckshot is more effective on human size targets, as it achieves adequate penetration to reach vital organs or the CNS. It may penetrate more interior walls, but that level of penetration is necessary to serve our purpose.
Aiming, not just pointing is still critical at contact distances. A shotgun isn’t like the spreader gun on Contra.
In other news…
9mm self defense ammo (aka hollowpoints) won’t overpenetrate like full metal jacket.
Soooo since this thread turned into a home-defense discussion, what is your opinion on these lil’ basterds?
Shoots either .45 lc or .410 shotshell. Capacity is 5 shots.
Follow-up question: If you would consider this one, bird shot or 000 buck shot?

The only purposes those are good for is shooting snakes or someone within arms reach, which can also be filled by a shovel and a knife, respectively.

lol.
For home defense I’d take a shotgun over a handgun.
If it has to be a handgun - .40 or .45 hollow points in a reasonably big gun - Glock 22 or Colt 1911A1 would be my choice.
Doesn’t Holymac have a Beretta Storm CX4 for home defense? I think I remember him saying something like that. I can see a short rifle as being a potentially effective home defense weapon. (CX4 comes in 9mm, .40, or .45 i think)

My father in law wants one, his idea is to load the first 2 rounds with 410 bird shot and the rest with .45, 2 panic shots and 3 finishers. Cool idea IMO.

The bodybuilding corollary for this idea is bulking for 2 weeks and cutting for a week.
Stick with what works- a gun from a reputable manufacturer chambered for ammunition that will achieve adequate penetration. When it’s time to pull out the firearm it’s time to put someone down for good.

yes.
accuracy of a (relativly) longer barrel, hi-capacity, low recoil, low chance of ‘muzzle blindness’, semi auto, increased accuracy due to stock and barrel.
lol at idiots thinking a judge is good for ccw. lol at thinking a pump shotgun is good for home defense.
lol at not taking into account penatration vs expansion
lol in general at people who’s knowledge of guns come from movies and a few times at the shooting range then wanting to talk combat applications of firearms.
to the guys who obviously read ‘boxotruth’ good job.
