Burnesy's Goals and Workout Blog

Firstly thanks all for the comments re my father in law. Unfortunately the old fella passed away quietly on Sunday night, he’d been fighting the cancer for quite a while so in many ways it was a bit of a relief that he was not in pain any more. Tough for my wife though as she has lost both parents in the last 18 months.

In terms of my knee, my 20 rep squat program has come to a premature end. Tried to do squats again on Monday and my knee started to give me the same sharp pain again. I think it just needs a bit of a rest, if that doesn’t do the trick off to the specialist I will go.

Training on Monday just gone,

Squats
60x5
100x5
120x10 (I dropped the weight a little to 120 for my 20 rep set, got to rep 8 and the twinge happened, hoped it would stop, it didn’t, got worse so I stopped.)
120x5 (Was cranky that my knee hurt so thought I’d try again, got tot eh 5th rep, pain again so gave up on the squats for teh day)

Standing Military Press
50x8
50x8
50x8

Chins
BW(102kg)x8
BWx8
BWx7

Dips
BWx15
Bwx10

Tricep Pushdown
30x10
30x10

Seated Concentration curl
12.5x10
12.5x10

That’s it. Just going to play things by ear for the rest of this week and let my knee have a break from squatting, pain only starts at the very bottom of the squat position so can probably stil do deads/cleans. Will have a go later today.

Burnesy

Very sorry to read about your Father-In-Law. Our thoughts and prayers go to you and your family.

I feel your pain with the knee. Listen to your body, bro!!!

Good to see you in the gym Burnesy!

Take some time, get things taken care of, deal with the issues at hand, and then come back to lifting. This is a marathon not a 100 meter dash.

How was the knee today?

mday

Burnsey, are you squatting high-bar or low-bar. Just thinking about your knees, and that the latter might be better for them.

Knee was fine with the cleans. Only really hurts at the bottom position of the squat, giving it a rest for a bit and see how it is next week. Will probably give some leg presses a go next week and then ease back into some overhead squats the following week.

Unfortunately I squat with a low bar position already, so no joy there. As I replied above going to give squats a rest for a week. When I get back to them I’ll ease in by doing some overhead squats for a week to see how that goes before moving back to some heavier stuff with the back squat. Fingers crossed after a break things will be okay.

You have been training very intensely, so I hope that the time off is all that you needed. Sometimes a minor injury gets exaggerated in that kind of context, so with luck you will be back good as new!

Geech,

I have taken some time off. With everything else that has been going on seemed a good option. Have done a couple of light training sessions but nothing worth writing up, also have been doing a bit of interval training on the C2 rower and stationary bike. Alot of my aches and pains have dissapeared and I’m looking forward to getting back into things next Monday.

One more thing to add to my list of what has been a pretty ordinary June is that I have to take my dog to the vet this afternoon to be put down, poor old girl has cancer and is now in a bit of pain, so time to man up and fdo the right thing, doesn’t make it any easier.

Burnesy

Burnesy,

Not a good month, sorry to hear about all the crap you got going.

Good luck,
mday

Hang in there Burnesy. Sorry about your dog. Never easy to put one down…I’ve had to a couple times.
I can relate to your busy schedule and having to miss workouts.

Friday arvo with my dog was one of, if not the toughest, half hour of my life. Thanks for the kind words guys.

Tough couple of weeks but over now and revelling in what the future holds. The time off sees to have healed up the niggles and I feel pretty good.

Looking at doing a Rippetoe type training program for the next 6 weeks with a bit of added bicep work courtesy of CT’s tips a few weeks back. No Biceps today just compounds.

Back in the gym. Really quick workout that I liked. Short and sweet 28 minutes all up.

Today

Squat
60x5
120x5
120x5
120x5

No knee pain hurrah

Bench

Deadlift

Chins

Thats all she wrote for today.

Short and sweet days are nice. Oftentimes, I get more out of those than the longer ones.

Good to hear the knee was feeling good!

Just keep at it Burnesy. Short workouts are my favorite kind. I tend to work harder because I dont have to spare any energy for an hour long workout.

Good work bro’… my condolences re: best friend.

Let me know what you think of the Rippetoe program… I am looking at it for the near future.

Burnesy,

Good to see you back and good to hear that you had no knee pain on the squats.

Looking forward to following the Rippetoe program.

Glad you are back in, Burnsey; efficient work on that session. Looking forward to following your new program cycle.
