Boxing

I just want to know if anyone has thoughts on the fights taking place tonight: John Ruiz vs Kirk Johnson and Butterbean taking on Larry Holmes. If you give less than a shit, I understand.

I hope Johnson will win.In that case he will be undefeated champ and Lewis might fight him to unify the division. One thing for sure, Lewis will never fight Ruiz.

Butterbean is a piece of , Holmes maybe old but he’ll still kick his ass. Ruiz isn’t as bad as everyone thinks…also no one comments on the fact that Johnson has not fought very much over the last two years, can you say “ring rust”? I’ll take Ruiz by decision.

Why do you say Lewis will never fight Ruiz?

Did you listen to postmatch interview with Lewise’s trainer E.Stewart? He said everything about Lewis meeting Ruiz. I agree Lewis should never fight that asshole. Ruiz is a disgrace for boxing, winning his fights without actually beating guys, his strategy is hit and clinch, hit and clinch. More like a wrestling match, nobody wants to see that kind of shit. And in the fight with Johnson he faked a low blow punch which was actually on the rib cage, but Ruiz spent 4mins 20 second ‘recovering’ from it. Fucking asshole.

Whatever Ruiz may be, Holmes was worse
in his heyday. I thought he was a total
disgrace as a champion.

First, he was king of the thumbs. He seemed
unable to have a fight without thumbing his
opponent often more than once, and detached
Earnie Shavers retinas with this decidedly
unclassy move.

Second, he was king of the dive. Anytime
he got clocked solidly, but not enough to
actually make him unable to stand, you could
be sure he’d dive so as to get a chance
to clear his head during the count. This
may be a winning-oriented strategy but
it’s one that reeks of his low class.

Third, he was king of the tomato cans.

And fourth, he was king of the ducks. I couldn’t begin to count how many guys were at the time generally believed to be the top contender available (Ring magazine, KO etc.) and he would not fight them, and I don’t think he
ever gave anyone a rematch who gave him trouble, and there were quite a few who
had fights so close as to seem to win.

Did he have some skills? Yes he did. In any era he’d have been a quite good #1 contender and in many eras he could legitimately win a title and hold it for at least a short while. But he also had no class whatsoever and I think would have been beaten a lot sooner if he’d had the willingness to face at least every now and then the top rated contenders as rated by entities other than the WBC. Sorry Larry, but Alfredo Evangelista, Lorenzo Zanon, etc. were not legitimate top rated contenders. Actually, they weren’t even good tomato cans. The man did make money but other than that he should be ashamed.
