Books for Twenty Somethings

Quiet a few interesting choices in here

My top choice: Crime and Punishment-I called in sick for a day just to keep reading, I demand a young man in his 20’s read this.

Other Choices

  1. Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by Shirer. Damn near took me two weeks of several hours a day to read but well worth it
  2. Common Ground-J. Anthony Lukas-read it in college, asked in a job interview about the most recent book I read, I remembered enough about this book to give an excellent answer and get the job, enjoyable read to boot!

From the Self-Help category

  1. Four hour workweek- Gave me some drive to try to be more efficient in everything I do
  2. Beyond Winning/Getting to Yes-required reading for a class I had, nothing too deep but helped me reflect on my actions etc
  3. Art of War- I personally found it a bit boring but probably would suggest-potentially the first self-help book?

‘Graphic’ Novels

  1. Swamp Thing-Alan Moore
  2. Watchmen
  3. Superman Red Son
  4. Y the last man
  5. The Boys
  6. Walking Dead
  7. Preacher
  8. Batman Kiling Joke
  9. Dark Knight Returns

I read a lot (and am in my 20’s)-My tip is to read a lot, the “change your life” book may be the first or the 50th that you read, but what has probably done more for me than any one book is the collective wisdom of the 100 or so i’ve read in the last 7 years. Also-I always read at least 2 books for every ‘graphic’ novel I read.

PS-I really enjoyed The Road by Cormac Mccarthy

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists
by
Robert Tressell
Written exactly a century ago. It is free under the “gutenburg project” in various ebook form.

I don’t see The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli on this thread. $1.69 at Amazon.

  1. Meditations- Marcus Aurelius: Life is going to suck sometimes, embrace the suck
  2. Man’s Search for Meaning- Victor Frankl: Achieving your goals is difficult, if you really understand what you want though, you can make it through anything to achieve your goals
  3. A Message to Garcia- Elbert Hubbard: The ability to complete a complex task with minimal instruction or oversight will take you far
  4. Getting to Yes- william Ury/Roger Fisher: Priceless
  5. High Fidelity- Nick Hornby (I only saw the movie): If you want to succeed in something, at some point you have to commit to success, rather than chasing “the next big thing.”

Regarding Ayn Rand/objectivist literature, if you must read one of her books, read “The Fountainhead;” better yet, read The Sword of Truth series, its a well written, if a bit long on exposition, fantasy series, that does an excellent job of explaining objectivist principles. Personally, I can’t read Ayn Rand, when I read “Atlas Shrugged” I felt like she was beating me over the head with every word.

Edit: I don’t agree with most aspects of objectivist philosophy, but do think it is important to understand alternative philosophies.

The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. I don’t follow it completely but it gave me an entirely new outlook on debt and how to manage my finances. [/quote]

How do you feel about Ric Edelman?

How long have you fags been sucking cokes because this is all so gay?

You need to realize most classics suck. Why? They were written 200-10,000 year ago. I have read Shakespeare in college for my degree and it’s BORING! Ditto anything you say, “Ooooooo it’s soo good”.

Gat a BEST of LIST for the year you live in. Here’s 2013: http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/top-10-books-of-the-year/2013/11/21/c4d92a7c-35b4-11e3-8a0e-4e2cf80831fc_story.html

  1. Try to read books that are current. Ayn Rand…ai yi yi…why would you read this? 40 year old dyke? Find something more relevant.

  2. Look at books like you would music. You Ayn Rand fuckers would be listening to chuck berry and claiming it’s relevant:. Tolstoy fans…would you listen to Beethoven all day?

  3. Read this book. It’s the best book you’ll ever read: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0770436404?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creativeASIN=0770436404&linkCode=xm2&tag=thewaspos09-20

  4. After you finish reading 3, read this book. It’s the best you’ll ever read: http://www.amazon.com/Everything-Illuminated-Jonathan-Safran-Foer/dp/0060529709/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1409287668&sr=1-3&keywords=jonathan+safran+foer

Bottom line fuckers, who really cares about books from 100-200 years ago…if the book is boring the historical significance does not matter.

Are you being serious?

Read some books that make you laugh! Too many serious recommendations let’s have some humorous ones.
My suggestions: “Just William” by Richmal Crompton and of course any “Jeeves” books i.e. P.G. Wodehouse.

Not new, but I haven’t seen much of sen say’s posts. I’m guessing I probably wouldn’t want to.

Sen Say’s an ass. He tends to get liquored up and not make any sense.

Oh yeah…I’m not new either, but I’m guessing I probably wouldn’t want to see much or your posts.

Your spot-on with that.

Ok…hey…I think I upset some guys and I apologize for that…I stick by what I say, but could have phrased it better.

Like, instead of accusing you all of being coke suckers (which I’m not sure if that was a drunken typo, or something that was hysterical when I was bombed and makes no sense now that I’m mostly sober) I could have said, “What ho lads? Try a little modern day literature rather than spending all your youth on stodgy classics. Ayn Rand is the bollocks. Ta!”

Speaking of which, I recommend this book to you: Meat eater : adventures from the life of an American hunter
by Rinella, Steven. It’s got great stuff on hunting and what it means to be a man and a great line about Shakespeare. Something like, “I never really got the point as there was too much mistaken identity and over emphasis on double entendres. Kind of like Three’s Company.”

Ta!
