Man, what the heck did the Pope say to him yesterday? I wasn’t aware that Boehner’s long goal was for a congressional address from the Pope, so that’s certainly interesting. I’m sure this mostly has to do with the pressures he was facing from his party, but who knows, maybe the Pope really opened his eyes during their closed-door meeting yesterday.

Boehner was in over his head from the very beginning. He was possibly the worst speaker that the republicans have ever put forward. Glad he’s leaving as they were going to boot him out over the next several months anyway.
He will now have more time to look at the Pope’s picture and cry. Okay that was mean, but this guy was never good for the party.
Bye John and have a happy retirement!
It’s a shame the Pope’s visit didn’t have a similar effect on Barack Obama…

Wow, thanks for the post. This is the first I’ve heard of this, but I’m sure it will be all over the news as the story unfolds. Would have been very interesting to be a fly on the wall during the Pope’s and Boehner’s converstation.
I don’t like the hard-right stance to shut down the government over planned parenthood. It would be a terrible idea that republicans have no way to win. Obama will veto if he can, and they don’t have the votes to override. Sign the bill with planned parenthood and keep the opinion of republicans higher so a republican president can get put into office. After that, it would be easy to defund planned parenthood.
Boehner was always a natural dealmaker - so he was instantly persona non grata to the Tea Party wing.
This portends bad things for the GOP. This will improve the chances Democratic pickups in the House and maybe the White House.
The Democrats hand the GOP a gift - and instead of consolidating and growing their coalition, they dissolve into internecine squabbling and ideological infighting.
Folks, they have the moniker the Stupid Party for a reason.

I agree!
Many conservatives don’t understand that if the government is shut down regardless of how it happens the left wing media will blame the republicans which could harm the eventual republican Presidential nominee. They need to play it cool in order to help the republicans win the White House. And then as you say it will be easy to defund the baby killing factory called planned parenthood.

To appease you, he announced his decision to resign Dec 31, 2016

The November 2014 elections had Republicans win big while running against your views. You even had Republican victories in statewide in very blue states, even here when Democrats lost their supermajority.
Donald Trump is #1 with Republicans, doing better with the Black vote than most Republicans have in the past, and the only candidate who is making everyone ask “how high” when he says jump.
The typical media punditry says one thing, the truth says the other.

He actually leaves office on January 20, 2017. And I’m happy about that!
I really wouldn’t want the buffoon Biden AKA “the gaffe machine” to take over it would give him the legitimacy that he doesn’t deserve. He’d then run as an incumbent.
Hey, I survived almost 7 years of Dumbo’s tax increases, job killing policies and multiple scandals (that the press turned their backs on). I can stick it out for another 482 days. Much of that will be lame duck territory which will be fun to watch.

Maybe we’ll get a Republican Speaker this time.

What a steaming pile, TB. Your brand of GOPism has produced a litany of failures.
One man’s “dealmaker” is another’s appeaser.
Good riddance.[/quote]
I don’t have a brand of GOPism - I’ve said a million times I am not a GOPer.
More to the point, the Tea Party gang have proven they couldn’t run a lemonade stand - why would getting rid of Boehner help them with getting anything done in Congress?
