Blackberry Choices?

OK fellow weightlifters, geeks, power students, and businessfolk:

Blackberry Curve 8310 vs. Curve 8900 vs. Bold 9000

Anybody use these devices? Ideally, has anyone used more than one of these devices? I have a choice of these three.

I’m tough with devices, so I need rugged.

I have a Pearl 8110 which I’ve hated since day one. Too small, have to double-tap, sound quality is Hell, so looking for the best of those.

Experiences?

I have the Bold & the only think I don’t like about it is, it’s really touchy feely. Barely touch anything and its dialing numbers or opening where ever the cursor last was. So be careful when putting in pocket. I’d be interested in seeing how the Torch was?

I should add that I will have to use this device for two years.

Can you use any of them before making a decision, even if its just holding for 10 seconds? There isn’t a whole lot of difference in those for what your looking for. If those are your only choices just get the Bold.

Go with the newer curve the 8900 model

Why?

I’ve had the Bold for two weeks now and I think it is great. I don’t have any previous BB experience (my company standard previously was a Windows Mobile platform). My sister, however, also just got the Bold as an upgrade from her previous company Curve and she loves everything except she misses her track ball. The Bold uses an optical sensor that in heavy use will last longer since it does not have mechanical moving parts.

If you don’t get it with BB 6.0, download the “Lamour” theme and you’ll get a much more effective layout.

JLD- Interesting. Part of the reason I’m going with a new company BB is this Pearl trackball is failing (amongst other things).

How is the sensitivity with the optical sensor? I imagine I have sausage fingers compared to your sister (unless she’s 5’9", 255).

My god Blackberry must be creaming themselves right now, they’re the most popular make on the market and everyone is getting one.

Curve 8350 - No complaints so far…

Fail.

But thanks for the thought.

Just got a Bold 9650 (Verizon) for one of my employees. Drops calls constantly. I can take it into a full coverage area and watch the signal strength bounce all over the place. I’ve upgraded with the latest software & re-provisioned the phone, neither has fixed the problem. Quick Google research found that lots of people having the same issue. It’s going back & getting replaced with a Motorola Droid 2. Had a 9630 before that wouldn’t make it more than 6 hours on a full charge, though a software update did fix that.

The size of your thumb won’t matter on the optical sensor. It just tracks your movement. My thumb covers the entire thing and there isn’t any problem with the tracking. The sensitivity is adjustable in the settings. I haven’t changed mine from the default setting.

The e-research I’ve done generally says that the 9000 is a bit faster for apps (which I don’t really use), but has a little ‘cheaper’ feel/heft versus the 8900. The only reason I even mention that is because I tend to be hard on devices during travel and day-to-day use.

9000 also has 3G capability, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to take advantage of it because I’m up here in buttfuck Maine and AT*T sucks balls in the northeast and across the country.

I have a bold 8900 which I use for work/email. So long that you keep it in the provided leather holster, you will have no problems with dirt getting in the ball.

I didn’t read any of the other posts so I may be repeating

I had a Bold for around 2-3 years and I absolutely loved it. It got dropped into a glass of coke and came out perfectly fine and dropped from waist height on many occasions. Very durable for everyday wear and tear and the occasional major slip up. Easy to type and use the apps. Overall I give it two thumbs up

Unfortunately I dropped mine from like 8 foot up the other day and when I went to go pick it up I dropped it again and the screen busted. Shame.

They are both really old, i;ve got the bold 9000 and its 2 years old, go for the brand new torch with the OS 6, if not the new bold 9700, better camera than the old bold and has a tocuhpad instead of the ball which can break easily.

It works for me. What are your beefs with it just so I know what to look out for?

Outdated, all of them, assuming you have ATT because the bold 9000 is ATT specific, I would suggest either the 9700 or the Torch.

Torch is pretty sick, OS 6.0 runs extremely fast, any of the phones will make your Pearl look like it belongs in the stoneage though, besides the 8310 which is really shitty.

Don’t mind my negativety toward them though, as I have been working in a cell phone department for over 2 years now some phones really piss me off, the 8310 is one of them. And I have owned the 9000, liked it, but it had too many glitches and when I switched to the iPhone I swore I’d never own anything else, iPhones shits on all other phones (No need for any comments from anyone on this I won’t argue, otherwise I’ll be quoted as an “Apple Fanboy” even though I like my PC more than Macs.)

9700 is the blackberry I would probably buy or I’d hold off for a bit until they fixed some bugs with the Torches software.

I don’t have a beef, but per the original post, I ONLY have a choice between:

  • Blackberry Curve 8310
  • Curve 8900
  • Bold 9000

These are company issued and I don’t pay a dime, so these are the choices we have. Company has a cut rate with two year plans. If I had a choice, I’d open up a wider discussion (feel free to do so), but for me specifically, I get one of the models above.

Addtionally, we don’t get 3G as part of coverage, so that’s not really even a consideration.

Biggest considerations:

  • Battery life
  • Screen quality
  • Durability
  • Sound quality

ANY are a step up from this Godforsaken BB Pearl. I think based on more research, I’m leaning toward Curve 8900.

I appreciate the responses, thank you.
