As a doctor, if you are presented with the idea that certain populations are predisposed to certain diseases, how would you interpret that information without the concept of race? Do you just ignore it because the categorical issues?
By and large, doctors are a very practical lot. So if something has been demonstrated to be of clinical utility, we tend to use it. And there is considerable evidence that the prevalence of certain illnesses co-vary with one’s geographic ancestry. An example from my specialty is glaucoma–there is indisputable evidence that its primary form is more common in AAs than it is in Caucasians. In fact, when an elderly (~80+) AA sits in my exam chair, before I even examine them I know there is a roughly 1 in 3 chance they have glaucoma.
That said, we (docs) are still trying to tease out how much of the observed co-variation is genetic (it seems clear at least some is) vs sociocultural. For example: In America, AAs have higher rates of HTN than do Caucasians. The question is, is the disparity due a genetic predisposition, or is it a result of other factors that co-vary along with these racial categories (eg, poverty, social stressors, etc)?
I could see a possibility there–culture affects environment and values, as well as behavior. It also changes over time both between groups and within them.
Click on them and read them with your eyes. Make notes on a piece of paper. Do what I and numerous others do every day of our lives. Seriously, this morning I have skimmed through about 10 studies and pulled one of them to do a deep dive into. It might take an hour or more to do a deep dive, but I can skim a paper and make notes in a matter of minutes.
It’s kind of funny to watch the one guy who mass-posts links more than anyone else (often from Wikipedia, lol) complain that other people mass-post links, especially when he’s the one who said they have to provide evidence. When evidence is provided, now suddenly he complains that he has to read it.
Exactly.
Black crime in certain areas isn’t caused by the level of melanin in the skin but how they are raised.
For example in Chicago, IL, blacks committed 76 percent of all homicides, despite composing 35 percent of the city’s population. Meanwhile Whites, who compose 28 percent of the city’s population, committed 4 percent of its homicides.
This has nothing to do with the Race of the people but instead to do with the culture of where they grow up and experiences they have.
But blacks contribute disproportionately to crime regardless of their SES. A while ago a graphic was posted showing rich blacks commit more crime than poor whites in America. Furthermore, blacks disproportionately commit crime not only in America but also in Canada, the UK and France.
I’m a normal fucking person who has better things to do, to be honest, than define a bizarre term like “gender creationist” and “race creationist” and try to figure out whether I fall into those bins.
Ah, good, now we’ve reached the “take a shot at his family” part of the discussion!
Treating women with respect is just such a drag, you know?
