You have renters/home owners insurance right OP?
what does a $4000 bike do for you that a cheaper bike wouldnt?
Lighter.

Tri bikes have different frame geometry for long distance riding and aerodynamics, are extremely light, outfitted with special crank assembly, and usually custom fitted to the rider- plus a billion other specialized accessories.

Not just your usual off the assembly line type of bike. Actually, 4k. is quite economical.

It makes it a more attractive target.

As a serious comment, a $4,000 bike is probably made of higher quality materials, built better and will be more reliable in the long term. I used to use my bike to commute 10 miles each direction over hilly terrain. I started out with a cheap Walmart type “mountain bike” and it seemed to work alright but after taking the thing up fairly steep hills, the daily commute took its toll on the bike’s drive train and the gears started stripping and slipping, the chain (can you believe it) started stretching (I actually had to remove links every few months to keep the chain usable), the pedal apparatus started bending, the gear shift and derailleurs started malfunctioning and parts of the bike frame welding started coming apart. After someone in a car hit me and totalled the bike, I hit their insurance up for a $1,000+ bike. It made all the difference in the world. The thing was lighter, smoother ride, and was definitely more durable and reliable. The only things I ever had to do to maintain it was change tires when they wore down.

thanks guys, today i am going to check out the local second hand bike shops, the police were telling me that if i could find my bike at such a shop they’ll be able to get it back

on another note, i borrowed my housemates bike yesterday, although it looks ok its a terrible bike, the rear brakes look like thy’ve been kicked in to the point that rather than rubbing on the wheel when you press down, they simply hit the spokes as they go round.

if the theives could tell that by looking at his like for a few minutes in the dark then it would be a little more understandable that they only took mine.

with all the nice stuff i’ve put on my bike at best it would be worth $450

Have you priced bikes lately? Replacing my mountain bike would be about 2500$
Not lately but it has been my experience that the price point keeps coming down. $2500 is a lot for a mountain bike unless you are a competitive racer. Two years after I bought my hardtail you could buy a full suspension with comparable components and frame materials for cheaper.

Ironically I rode way more when I had a $300 GT than I do now on my $1000 KHS. But having kids will do that.

Have to agree here, maybe its just because I am cheap on certain things. a $4000 bike better fucking transform into a hang glider and sex doll.

it wasnt just the bike alone that made it almose 4g’s… it was the pedals, gears, wheels, crank, brakes, seat, speedometer, blow out kit, drop down handlebars… it was all the extras that made it such an expensive bike.

Also, I never said I paid $4,000 for it… i got it from a guy I used to work with who put all that stuff together. He upgraded to a nicer bike and sold me his used one.

There is a huge difference between cheaper race bikes and more expensive ones. Until you ride a couple to compare them then you dont really notice.

Greg that sucks about the tri bike. I’ve been wanting to get into road racing (biggest cyclist in the peloton are my goals for this) for quite some while but have been unable to due to the costs of bikes. Again sucks to hear that it happened.

yeah man, it blows cause it was a very nice/expensive bike but to be honest… I didnt really ride it very much. I was planning on doing a few tri’s and I was training for them but was diagnosed with compartment syndrome in my shins and that stopped me from doing any sort of distance running. I cant really run anything over 3 miles anymore.

The whole process of getting my claim in through my insurance company is a hassle though. Since the bike isnt brand new I have to go back and look up all the old parts and find out what comparable parts these days would cost… its a bitch.

You should look around on craigslist or a bike/race forum and see if someone is selling a bike thats a few years old. You can get good deals on bikes like that which might not have that many miles on em.

Very expensive hobby, HD stands for Hundred Dollars, becuase you will spend at least that everytime you go to a harley shop. I love my bike though, just wish I had more time to ride right now.

That’s a very shiny Harley mate, kudos!

My current bike just sits in my back yard. It’s a piece of trash that I never ride and I got it for free. But you can be sure I’ll be busting it out as soon as gas hits $8 a gallon. We’re half way there already.
