Big Actors Who Can Act

anyway - Charles Bronson in Hard Times - not huge but at age 54 this is an impressive physique
Much love for Bronson, but today I would hope 54 isn’t holding that many people back. We just mentioned Michael Clarke Duncan who is also in his late 50’s and I would rate that is slightly MUCH more impressive.

Nothing against what you wrote, but I do think the days where “50” marked the end of impressing people around you with physical performance are in the last.

60 is the new 50.

All true, just impressed with Bronson at 54 v most actors that are considered ‘muscular’ by the mainstream now. Duncan has basically won the thread, and if any more evidence were needed this is him towering over The Rock, a big enough dude in his own right

I loved that guys character in Dexter. That actor reminds me of a younger Carl Weathers (also a great actor who had a good physique).

Also…no, we didn’t. Most big guys in movies in the 80’s were either the action hero, the villain or “thug 1”. Not portraying these guys as ‘AVERAGE EVERYDAY PEOPLE’ is what we are discussing. That is what keeps really big guys from simply being cast as the “new doctor on House” or “The nice ambulance driver who isn’t killing people”. Big muscles are still seen as an “abnormality”. Name one single role in the 80’s or 90’s where some guy my size played a role that had NOTHING to do with his muscles at all.
Not from the 80s or 90s, but I thought Eric King’s Sgt. Doakes in Dexter was a character who just happened to be muscular rather than it being his raison d’etre. I’m not sure anyone ever commented on his size in the show. Good actor too.
Good mention. That is honestly the only one I can think of also…even though he really isn’t that big at all. It is just that everyone else co-starring around him is so damn small. I really doubt his arms are much over 15". He’s just lean…but yes, he does register as “muscular” on screen and they don’t make him an idiot because of it.
If only he were still in the show… Was one of my fav. actors there. Didn’t really like the way they made his char act in the last season he appeared in, though, but anyway.

Weathers and Arnold… Looking at that old pic now, they weren’t that much bigger than the guy who played Doakes in Dexter (esp. Weathers, probably the same size…) … Surprised me, memory can really play tricks on you… Arnold is sure down 40-50 lbs from his largest, maybe more.

I remember reading him state something about how he needed to be leaner for his acting role (leaner than in competition? Not that they were all that lean back then compared to today, especially during his early reign, but huh?). Shame if you ask me… I can understand that in Levrone’s case and what with modern cinema asking almost every muscular actor to slim down… But back then Arnie could have made even more of a statement. Too bad.

Curveballs:
Hank Azaria

carrot top. I have a sneaking feeling someone mentioned this but I cant really give a shit.

Me too! I never saw him in anything else though. Dexter was never as good without him.

Brian Thompson.

Jamie Fox, Will Smith, etc, got big for their roles, in my mind I don’t even consider them. If that were the case we’d be talking about Jackman as Wolverine, and that Lautner kid in New Moon.
Why all the hate on this site for Jackman?

How can you compare him to the Lautner kid? Jackman easily got as big as Smith, or any of the other “regular” actors in this thread… I think bigger, I tried some quick net research, and got 220 pounds for Wolverine, not HUGE, but I bet that’s 60 pounds on the twilight kid.

Is it the Wolverine thing? You all thought that a character who in the comic books was like 5’6" should have been played by a 6’6" tall monster, and he was just disappointing? Or is it just a reaction to all the hype, because he looked so “big” compared normal societal standards that every on this board considers puny?

He’s no Arnold, but out of the pool of actors available, he’s one of the larger ones, and can act.

Can anyone explain the hate to me?
For me its just the fact that Jackman is 11 inches too tall to play Wolverine.
What 5’3 195 pound actor could pull off that role? Russel Crowe was supposed to be Wolverine and even he’s 5’11.
Temuera Morrison (5’7): closer to Logan than either Jackman or Crowe. Not photogenic enough for Hollywood though.

He was the alien bounty hunter(s) in the X-Files, right?

Yep! Also the villain in Cobra and one of the punks offed by Arnie at the start of The Terminator. Ten years ago he’d have made an awesome He-Man. Still a good fit for King Grayskull if they ever get around to remaking Masters of the Universe

No pic’s of Terry Crews? Come on son!

Cephalic C,

In reference to your query about size and the Black community, in my experience, most of the guys who weren’t huge were pretty damn cut. You could walk down a block and 7 out of 10 guys would appear to be very lean and defined, however, weighing 150-175 lbs. wouldn’t save you from being “tested” on the regular. Other Black folk would typically underestimate guys of that size. Now, you put some size on and people would generally tend to respect you a bit more, even overestimate. I’m not certain how it was for X in his neck of the woods, but where I grew up, that’s how it often went down.

Good mention, but aside from “Everybody Hates Chris,” pretty much all of his roles have cast him as the big dumb guy. See “Friday After Next”

Terry Crews rocks! Even in his comedic roles he is far from “the big dumb guy”. He was the best thing by far in White Chicks and has a dramatic role in Hard Times…his performances are usually better than the movies he appears in. He should’ve been B.A…but is usually on the periphery because of his size.

They reduced him to an extra in Terminator Salvation - talk about underused. Casting directors are morons…

He had a small role in Street Kings where he did well.

I usually see him cast as the big hilarious guy, though.

Stephen Lang from Avatar: not too shabby for a 58 year-old.

I’m suprised Djimon Hounsou hasn’t been mentioned yet:
