I think you are over estimating the Chinese government. It is probably a negligence lab leak, rather than a well planned attack. People are more often incompetent rather than competent.

I don’t think the leak was intentional. I think the cover up and letting it spread was.

I think the cover up was political and kind of not intentional as well.
WHO were covering their incompetent ass and their funding.
China had no clue what the hell was going on and they did no care much. They focused on stopping the virus in China.
Fauchi and his accomplises seem to be covering their research money, their own assess and their whole research community.
The rest cared only how to blame Trump.
I’d support a UN mandate forcing the CCP to put up $20b towards emerging disease/virus/mRNA vax research, and also to put together a standardized protocol for identifying, containing and notifying the public about any possible diseases or viruses that appear that would be independently audited regularly by a UN body. Something along those lines.
I do not see anything positive coming from purely punitive or retaliatory attacks which is what military options would be.

I think I would have Biden visit Taiwan and announce a big weapons sell. That should get their attention.

I’m generally pretty hawkish, but thats a super agressive move with minimal upside and a huuuuuge downside.
I think any actions taken need to primarily benefit the US and the world. I don’t see a military option that accomplishes that, but I’m open…

I know nothing about this area but common sense says the likelihood you are going to be able to engineer something that is going to pop up in nature seems extremely low. That you get a handling error may also be low but the consequences can be devastating.
I assume this is why Obama put a halt on this type of research. Benefit unlikely to be worth the squeeze but would be interested in hearing from those in the know.
