Aren’t the Irish white only for the last 130 or so years?
Is it that long? In my neck of the woods, Catholics only got a guaranteed vote in the 70’s.
Among Catholics or Anglos? Either proposition is debatable.
Both. I always imagine Thomas More when I think of Anglo Catholics.
I was referring to the US, due to your reference of the term WASP which to my knowledge is exclusively American.
I worked in Dublin so I’m intimately familiar with the history of the NI civil rights movement, as well as that concept that Americans find so perplexing - when two groups of people who look exactly the same can’t stand each other.
I’m not sure if my heuristic is correct, but based on a rather limited sample I concluded that Northern Irish who have Americanish first names are Protestant? I’m talking about under 35s.
I was using it for the acronym. It is exclusively American, to be sure.
People up home still tell me that they can tell the other side by look. It’s in the eyes, supposedly.
I was trying to refute this by cycling through my protestant friends, and I cannot think of any confounding examples at present, so you may be on to something. “William” is a dead give away, every time.
Not usually. There’s a pretty good chance that agree=socialist.
I don’t think it’s anymore or less than anything else people reflexively call others to prevent discussion. Socialist, cop haters, etc these are all blanket attacks.
On the right for a significant period of time now socialist has been used to describe almost everything Dems do…even if what they are doing is the exact same thing as what Republicans just did. Socialism is used every bit as often as racism.
Don’t get me wrong neither are good to do especially if they are being used to shut down discussion. But neither is significantly more prevalent and both are frequently used inaccurately.
“Socialist” is often(almost always?) accurate. I don’t hear a whole lot of “cop hater.” Maybe “anti-police/law enforcement.”
Correct. Democrats pretty much own it, while Republicans deny it.
Catching up on this thread… we really went around the block on topics lol
I don’t think so. Michigan becomes like the 3rd largest standing army in the world during deer season…that’s one state and hardly rare. There are quite literally millions of people that hunt.
On the other hand I’m going to leave this alone because there is exactly no agreement with me.
Agree. I like your position in general on this topic, and that’s about all the farther I’m going into the topic lol. It’s been done to death.
To me this is the crux of it. I don’t think anybody NEEDS 30 guns, but that’s besides the point. In general - and this goes for all rights - I have a very high bar for any restriction of said right to earn my support. Obviously not everyone agrees on the specifics so something that clears my bar might not clear someone else’s. But I do not think it is safe to compromise in certain regards for any right.
The slippery slope is indeed a logical fallacy, but it only applies to strict deduction. There are documented cases of this slippage in other countries that show it is possible and has occurred… and I have no desire to join them. “There is nothing so permanent as a temporary government program”.
I try to separate my dislike of positions from a qualification on capabilities. In this case I think I’ll need a little more. He’s stuttered for most of his life, and he has admitted in the past to being a “gaffe machine” in his own words.
Frankly, although I’m biased heavily, I think he was much more cogent than Trump’s typical ramblings.
To the point though - a number of GOP senators also think his faculties are just fine, even if they disagree on his platform:
Agree. I think it is inconsistent (been saying that a lot) to think Biden is incapable of doing the job, but Trump wasn’t. I think he has done better on speaking on policy too.
Hopefully the senile narrative is dispelled when people watch his appearances, but I doubt it will to many who believe the narrative.
No. The conservative “race” card is socialist.
I am not sure I agree with you. I really do not care about what he says or how he says it, but what he does. His actions in the first 60 days have been a mix of tantrum (just as much as Trump was accused) on the border, melt down of the economy and press conference behavior Trump never could have done. He basically un-did the Southern Border just to undo Trump directives, no thought to how to deal with the repercussions. He cancelled infrastructure projects, that actually will create more pollution. He signalled the ending of a major industry that we will need for at least 50 more years.
Pushing through debt levels we have never seen, because we care? And now he is going to tax business, capital gains and estates. Trump may have had communication issues, but his policies were sound. I am scared to see what the next 60 days bring…
How?
This is nothing new at all. Trump did the same damn thing undoing a lot of Obama EOs and policies just because they were his. So have many presidents in past decades. This doesn’t make Biden special, and you absolutely cannot argue that Trump didn’t do EXACTLY this himself.
This I agree with, but the end has been signalled before. It’s been a slow decline that will not be reversed regardless of his actions.
Don’t bring this up. Just don’t. Trump completely ignored the debt during a GOOD economy so there is no way you can argue Biden is somehow worse (this far into his administration).
Then maybe you shouldn’t be watching the news. Just seems really anxiety ridden to me. I understand people talking about freedom of speech issues and fundamental rights during this time, and agree those are always worth discussing and important to not give away regardless of who is in office. But these other policies are frankly nothing new at all. They are not extreme. I don’t even like some of them (notably tax plan and especially estate, and the oil move), but they’re just not that scary.
My post was only on the mental fitness of Biden and contrasting it with Trump’s mental fitness. It was independent of policy. You didn’t argue against my post.
Not really. Unless you think the government doing anything is socialism. But it’s used in the context of trying to change the country to something entirely different. Republicans use it as a blanket statement to attack Dems every bit as much as racism is used to attack Republicans.
Lmao. You want to go back and look at 60 days of Trump tweets compared to 60 of Biden? Ignoring everything else this is patently absurd unless you’re looking at Trump with the most rose colored glasses in history.
You are entitled to your opinion, this is still America. We disagree on the current direction.
Most of your responses are that others did it too, besides the energy fiasco. Bad policy is bad policy. Trump was the worst of 2 bad candidates in both 2016 & 2020. At least Trump’s policies at least his policies favor the US. His personality and communication skills are horrendous.
Globalist and a move to more socialist policies do not play into the US"s favor, especially with China’s “China First” policy.
The Commonwealth, EU, China, Russia, India and Pacific Rim all act in their best interest, we seem to believe we can’t. Under Dems we seem to be paying alot for little influence or results. Dems are great locally, but bad at State and Federal in my opinion. Enjoyed the conversation.
If Biden has dementia his dementia has him more in control of his thoughts and emotions than Trump was at any point of his Presidency. Low bar, but accurate.
