Biden 2021 - A Mediocre Middle Ground

They’re seeing effects because the core of a Soviet nuclear reactor undergoing a failed stress test exploded. How many people died from the US Chernobyl - Three Mile Island? Zero, with no radiation seeping into the surrounding area.

The anti-nuclear campaign of the 1970ies and 1980ies in the West massively contributed to the acceleration of global warming.

French carbon emissions per produced kWh of electricity are 1/10th of UK or Germany, as they’re getting more than two thirds of their needs from nuclear power.

This is some real low hanging, bipartisan unity-fruit. Let’s see if the GOP goes for it, or continues their devolvement into the trumpublican swamp party.

Saw a Facebook post attacking Beau Biden for something he did when he was attorney general. Good to see people committed to dragging down dead people like they did with John McCain.

Who posted it?

Still blows my mind that people are A-Okay with trumps comment about POWs. Tells me a lot about a person that easily brushes it off as NBD.

Random person. I shouldn’t have put GOP in there actually thought about that after I posted. I’m going to edit mine.

But I still think it’s relevant because we just had a President (who this person undoubtedly voted for) shitting on a dead veteran so much.

It really is. In normal times, a member like that wouldn’t even be in the house. In other times they would have had a big slapping back into line and censure from their party leadership.

I get that this step could lead to a tit for tat kind of set up in the future, but fuck me if the GOP had some spine this wouldn’t be happening now. I mean, she’s a fucking freshman. If Mitch calls you a cancer to the party then I mean…

If you go back up thread I am all for nuclear power provided the right regulations are in place (they are in the IS, but we keep taking reactors down).

The really long term effects (like 500+ years) of storing the waste is not known and cannot really be predicted. Even the lead coffins they now bury the stuff into are likely to leech to over time.

Well, looks like the GOP will not censure or remove the wacko from committees themselves, so it’s going to a vote on the house floor.

I hope the Republican voters out there pay close attention to how their representative votes on this and understand what that vote means.

I already know how my reps voted for the certification and that’s all I needed. Of course I’ll track this too

Same lady who believes in Qanon, and harassed a Parkland school shooting survivor for testifying while calling the tragedy a false-flag operation, has been placed on the house committee for Education and Labor. Lets see how many Reps support this lady having a hand in our children’s futures.

Oh I know. I think perhaps she ought to go back to secondary school herself. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ve successfully piloted brain transplants yet.

Is that the one who believes in Jewish Space lasers starting forest fires? That’s just…I mean… Where do you start?

Apparently, you start by putting her on the Education and Labor Committee, and also on the Budget Committee.

Anyone concerned by stroke of a pen EOs or ramming through legislation in unity unilaterally?

Or have you been informed these are happening by your news sources?

I’ll have you know the people at whom your questions are directed are principled opponents of executive overreach and are extremely well-informed.

We actually discussed that above at least a few of us did. I’m not any more a fan of it (EO’s or “ramming” legislation) than when the GOP did it. But I also don’t spend time being too mad that the Dems are busy doing the exact same things the GOP did. If someone didn’t expect that then they haven’t been paying attention.

Doesn’t make it right but it is the fear when as I believe Aragorn said the norms are violated.

Biden Executive Orders: How He Stacks Up With Other Presidents Biden Executive Orders: How He Stacks Up With Other Presidents : NPR

This stood out to me, and made me feel better:

while the numbers are large, these actions aren’t barrier-breaking. They call for the creation of task forces, direct agencies to begin a regulatory process or explore a policy change.

A lot of what these orders consist of are plans to make plans, in a sense," Rudalevige said. “There’s a lot of reviewing, reporting, sort of an urging to rev up that process, but it’s not a substitute for the process itself.”

Just a side note.

Meltdown is not an official term but melting point of uranium fuel rods is 2800 Celsius and currently the cores at Fukushima are 90 and 100 Celsius respectively for reactors 1,2 and 3.

The cores are not molten and probably haven’t been since right after the accident.

Do they still circulate water to keep them cool. Yes. But the situation is under control and they’ve done well to recover.

Yeah I suppose you have to pick your poison. But I am optimistic.

Pushing EOs thru barely even registers these days.

Maybe we commence with concern once we’ve hit at least double-digit numbers of Acting (read: unconfirmed) cabinet-level positions?

What’ll warrant definite concern is if we eventually reach the blanket “we’re rejecting all Congressional subpoenas” stage of executive action, sheesh

Yes and I have been for years. But it’s tit for tat now because both parties are unable to work together, and the GOP decided to try burning any bridges they still had left with their approach to the previous POTUS nonsense.

And EOs have been doing this for decades.
