Better Living Through Iron

Odd, I don’t think of myself as looking particularly scary or threatening.

Cycle 6, Week 3, Day 1:
Warmup: usual, plus 10@bar, 10@65
MP: 5@100, 3@110, 5@125 (PR)
Pullups: 3x5

Accessories: None. In about 3 hours, I get to go check out Wild Iron Gym, meed Marcus Wild, and do some bench ME work with the team. I’m already wiped from last night’s TRX and today’s MP max load, so I didn’t want to push it.

I also saw an ENT specialist this morning. My sleep doctor said I should get turbinate reduction surgery – basically, removing some of the soft tissue inside my nose – to help me breathe better and get more oxygen. The ENT said the in-office procedure wouldn’t be effective, so I go under the knife next Thursday so he can surgically remove some tissue, as well as shave down the underlying bone. He said I should see a 50% increase in airflow through my nose. Maybe now I’ll stop panting like a dog in the gym!

Anyway, this works out well, since that’s when I’m supposed to start my deload, and I’m supposed to avoid “strenuous activity” for about 10 days. I figure I’ll just stay out of the gym that day and the next, hit the deload the following week, and by then I should be fully recovered and hopefully can start training with the Wild Iron team on a regular basis.

That’ll mean I’ll be off the 5-3-1, but I’ll be on a Westside program, surrounded by guys (and women!) tons stronger than I am, used to competition, and more than willing to help me grow. I’m optimistically hoping to add 100 lbs to each of my lifts in the next year. Which, when you think about it, I would do for the lower body on 5-3-1 anyway, and I think the direct coaching will help a lot with my presses.

Weight: 247.5.

That sounds like an exciting plan! I am envious of your opportunity.

I am one happy camper.

I went to Wild Iron gym tonight, met the team (and discovered why Becky outlifts me…she’s ranked 2nd or 3rd in the world in her weight class!), and did some ME bench work. I managed 185 w/60lbs of chains about 5 times. Blew 205 with the same chains, tho. :frowning:

They video every training session, so it should be available online tomorrow. I’ll link it when it is.

I’m really looking forward to working with these guys and gals. So, I accepted their invitation to join the team, and will be back Saturday morning for the DE lower body work. They do DE lower Sat mornings, DE upper Sun mornings, ME lower Tues evenings, and ME upper Thu evenings.

Ordered some wrist wraps from EliteFTS.

woohoo! good show mcl! congrats

Yeah, I look weak and puny by comparison.

But not for long!

mcl…that is sweet! Congratulations on the score! The expectations just went up!

No, you don’t look puny at all. You look like someone who is about to bust loose…

Sweet. That’s a video full of strong mother f’ers.

I want full and detailed reports along the way about your thoughts and experience on Westside vs. 5-3-1.

you don’t give yourself enough credit. it won’t be long before you are up with those guys in raw strength. none of them are that far ahead of your potential.

are you going to become a gear whore too??

Great stuff MCL. That is going to be fun. I think you will enjoy that style of traiing. And if you have a team like that to work with, why not go for the gear whoring?

Thanks everyone!

I haven’t decided on the gear whoring yet. One of the guys lifts raw, the rest use gear (though some not all the time). I probably will shirt or suit up eventually, though, even if it’s just to get a feel for it. I’d like to get my raw lifts a bit higher before I do, however.
