Best Male Actors in Last 20 Years

  1. Tom Hanks
  2. Don Cheadle
  3. Terrence Howard
  4. Jeremy Piven (he just kicks ass on Entourage)

I felt about the same, until someone pointed out that he gave virtually the same performance in War of the Worlds.

Okay, first, it’s twenty years, not more. So, though I would place both Pacino and DeNiro on the list, neither has done his best work in the last twenty years - Pacino in Godfather, Serpico, etc… - and DeNiro in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas. Same with actors who came to the fore in the 70’s like Nicholson.
And Bruce Lee wasn’t even around.
Plus, I restricted it to guys who have been in at least one hollywood movie, even if their best work is foreign. So that means no Tony Leung, Tadanobu Asano, Ken Ogata etc…

So, here’re my four:

  1. Stellan Skarsgard: see his von Trier movies, Ronin, then see a little known thing called O kelvin which has 3 guys in a hut on Greenland and you can’t recognize Skarsgard, he’s that good. Oh, and he’s that good in about 4 languages.

  2. Philip Seymour Hoffman: because he can do everything well.

These last two are a real crapshoot because there are just so many to choose from.

  1. Sean Penn: because he is just so strong, from guitar players (Woody Allen) to bastards he goes for it. God, he is good in 21 grams.

  2. Gary Oldman: for Sid and Nancy, Prick up your Ears, and for being the biggest evil ham bad guy, outdoing even Pacino, then coming back to earth in Batman Returns.

I could swap Daniel Day Lewis, Don Cheadle, Clive Owen, Tim Roth and probably another half dozen given time, into the last two spots on this list depending on my mood.
