Best Male Actors in Last 20 Years

Good call on Forrest Whittaker. I don’t see how anyone can defend Nick Cages acting ability. The guy just irritates the shit outta me. Absolutely awful. Two extremes from the same highschool…I also think George Clooney is really good in certain roles, and always entertaining. I don’t think Keannu Reeves is as bad as some have stated.

OK So I got to say something about Crowe. If you have never seen Romper Stomper, go watch it, and if at the end you still think Russell is monotone, well then maybe you should stick with talking about airline mags.

'nuff said for now.

romper stomper has the best chase scene ever. and what’s the beef w/ crowe ? that guy kicks ass - my favorite role from him being “the insider” though “l.a. confidential” was good too.

thing with crowe is he’s so good he gets taken for granted. that’s an achievement.

 1. Edward Morton
 2. Denzel Washington
 3. Don Cheadle
 4. Al Pacino

Honorable Mention

 1. Christopher Walken
 2. Mel Gibson
 3. Benicio del Toro
 4. Ken Watanabe
 5. Patrick Stewart

Crap! Totally forgot about Mel Gibson. GREAT actor & should be in anyone’s top 4!

Yeah. I think Tom Hanks is pretty damn impressive too. He’s very versatile. From Forrest Drunk to an alcoholic manager in A League of Their Own to Big to Cast Away he’s done some great work.

Yeah, more like Cast Away 3 hours of my life. What a crappy movie.

I dont usually rag, but Nicolas Cage a good actor? It hurts my head to think about. Him and Keanu are monotone brothers.

The one I didn’t think of that is underrated is Jack Nicholson. How could I forget him? Batman was Batman because he was the joker. That’s why it will always be the best of the series.
I didn’t like Cast Away either. But I think he did a good job. Especially considering that he spent two hours of it playing off a volleyball.

I forgot about Christopher Lloyd. He’s verstitle. He played a mental patient (twice, One Flew, The Dream Team) to perfection, a mad scientist that was spot on and a looney, pale, bald, man in a heavy grey coat. He’s another very underrated actor. Never really a leading man though. Thats a shame.

RAY LIOTA.

Most underrated Great actor in history.

I agree. Perhaps not the most underrated, but certainly underrated. You can’t see Revolver and say with a straight face that he can’t act.

I’m happy to see there’s another Ray Liota fan! Sometimes in conversation I will mention how great I think he is and my friends will say, “who the heck is Ray Liota?”

I love how Ray Liota scares the sh** out of me and keeps me on the edge of my seat at the same time!

Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, Robert DeNiro, and Mel Gibson.

The only reason Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino don’t make the list is because their best movies were over 20 years ago (Godfather, Scarface, The Shining, One Flew…).

Ok, since we’ve exhausted the past 20 years I’ll talk everything prior to that!

Cary Grant
Charlie Chaplin
Paul Newman
Humphrey Bogart
James Stewart
John Wayne
Marlon Brando
James Dean

Underrated:
Ted Knight
Jackie Gleason
Bela Lugosi
Sidney Poitier

Sean Connery needs to be mentioned.

You can just call him Bond.

This actually brings up the point that I’ve tried to be objective about this issue, but find that it’s impossible. I just like old guys with accents too much.

Philip Seymour Hoffman has to be on my list, but the rest would be Patrick Stewart, Bond, Morgan Freeman, and the like.

Steve Buscemi (who?) wins the Oscar for most underrated.

BTW-Did anyone mention Harvey Keitel?

I agree. Intense movie with a top notch performance.

Some of you guys like some pretty crappy movies and crappy actors.

Truman Show? Please.

Roudy Rodney Pipper duh

He is indeed a very interesting actor. His face is very expressive, which was one of the primery reasons, incidentally, why Stanley Kubrick choose him for the role of Jack Torrence in The Shining.

His performance in the above mentioned film is often deemed over-the-top, which it indeed is. However, as with Steven Railsback in Helter-Skelter Jack has a unique ability to deliver a creepy performance while simultaneously evoking humor.

After Kubrick’s working experience with Peter Sellers in Lolita and Doctor Strangelove it’s easy to notice that the former became enthrolled with satirical performances. Malcolm McDowell’s performance in A Clockwork Orange is in my opinion a case in point. This ia also true of certain performances and/or particular scenes throughout Kubrick’s work.

His films prior to Lolita appear to lack any of the moderate/extreme satirical flavor his later films possessed [in varying degrees].

Thus, in my opinion, Jack Nicholson was perhaps the perfect choice for what Kubrick was attemptingto accomplish, whether or not one likes or dislikes his performance in the film.

Patrick Stewart and Harrison Ford are at the top of my list. Ford’s films have been licking chode as of late, but he has starred in some of the best movies of the past couple decades. Patrick Stewart seems to thrive, regardless of the character he plays.
1A. Patrick Stewart
1B. Harrison Ford
3. Tom Hanks
4. Denzel Washington

Peter North. Come on now, it’s the only guy who actually makes you buy a porn because of the guy in it not the girl(s). Now thats good acting.

4. Don Cheadle - does not really deserve this spot but I didn’t want to mention Nicholson, Pacino, or DeNiro again and would rather bring up an actor not mentioned. He has been great in Crash, Hotel Rwanda, Boogie Nights, and Ocean’s Eleven among others.
Did you see Devil in a Blue Dress with Denzel? It may have been one of Cheadle’s firs flicks and he rocks as Mouse, Easy/Denzel’s homicidal cousin.

Easy: “Why did you knife him?”

Mouse: “You told me not to shoot 'im.”

I’m not a big Sean Penn fan, and he can certainly be an annoying ass, but when I saw Mystic River, his performance just laid me out.

No one has mentioned Bill Murray. That cat has come a long way.

Agreed, as much as I can’t stand the guy, Penn’s performance was great in that movie, but I thought that Tim Robbins still just stole the show in that one. He was amazing.
