Zeta Gundam is one of my all time favorite animes ever.
Gundam Wing and G Gundam were pretty good.

Loved Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz. Gundam 00 was pretty good (as long as you ignore the main character’s identity crisis). Unicorn was okay. Fighter G was pretty good as well.

Just gave AoT a shot. Holy fuck, it is incredible. I honestly thought it was another Naruto/Bleach/One Piece kiddie-bullshit but it’s the real deal. It gets boring in the middle but when the Female Titan showed up it got really good. I really hate that Armin kid though. There’s always gotta be that one weak kid. The whole Survey Corp is legit though, I hope they focus on them the rest of series.
The anime becomes a cluster fuck of Story line later on lol
I’m on episode 21. I don’t think I’ve seen a show, live action or Anime where there were so many deaths to the main characters.

I really wish Gundam and other Mecha Anime didn’t always use the “Woe-is-me” Main Character Archtype. Evangelion is the worst because even when the world was ending Shinji was a huge pussy. It’s probably why I always rooted for Zeon forces. They’re all harden, mature war veterans.

You need to watch Basilisk then.
Basilisk is great. Though the live action version was the classic botch job, just terrible.
I usually tell people that if they like Ninja Scroll then Basilisk would be up their alley.

Yea, this is a bit of an annoyance for me as well. G Gundam wasn’t as bad as Wing or Endless Waltz (Heero got on my nerves after a while). Evangelion was great except Shinji. i’m sure this trend is supposed to show the dichotomy between large superior war machines and their frail human pilots.
To that end i once read an article in a literary magazine about Anime and how a lot of the imagery and plots that show cities being destroyed (especially Tokyo) was a subconscious societal reaction to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. it directly referenced Urotsukidoji and Nagumo’s ravaging of Tokyo. It also had some theories on that scene that equated Nagumo’s laser spewing tentacle/phallus’ (what is the plural of Phallus anyway, Phallusis? Phallicies?) was a symbol of western might and force during the war. Not sure i buy all that, but it was an interesting article.

I feel that most anime has the woe-is-me character. It is normally just the main character’s weaker best friend or ally. Mecha just brings this type of character to the forefront to achieve the dichotomy that Redsol touched on. It is always part of the story line that the machine is inherently strong and the main character needs to harden their resolve and sacrifice themselves for the greater good. I agree Shinji sucked but Heero did not annoy me near as much. If it had not been for Relena he would have gone on as a heartless, rampaging, psycho in the most powerful weapon in the universe. Same shit with Setsuna and Marina in 00.
One of the main reasons Shinji’s character, and the whole anime/manga as a whole, was constantly depressed was because the direction/writer/I forget was constantly depressed.
"Anno’s next project was the anime TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995?1996), which would be recognized as an influential animated series.
It is plausible that Anno’s four-year period of depression was the main source for many of the psychological elements of the series and its characters, as he wrote down on paper many of the trials and tribulations of his condition. During the show’s production, Anno became disenchanted with the Japanese “otaku” lifestyle. For this and other reasons (although perhaps by design as well), Evangelion’s plot became increasingly dark and psychological as the series progressed, despite being broadcast in children’s television timeslot. Anno felt that people should be exposed to the realities of life at as young an age as possible, and by the end of the series all attempts at traditional narrative logic were abandoned, with the final two episodes taking place within the main character’s mind."

While I can maybe accept that for Shinji, It can’t explain why there is a constant theme of whiny MC that have to learn to grow up while humanities last hope rest on their shoulders. Amuro Ray from Mobile Suit Gundam who is the original immature brat and would’ve/should’ve gotten killed in his first battle had it not been the RX-72’s God Mode armor and capabilities, Banagher Links from Gundam Unicorn who is child and is extremely naive and yet nobody realizes this and allows him to pilot one of the most powerful Gundam in the UC storyline , Lt. Shiro Amada from 08th MS team who is an okay guy…until you realize that his naive nature could have easily get him and his comrades killed because he falls in love with a female soldier, and Kou Uraki from Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory who has some serious issue with women and gets his ass constantly beat.
I wish we get a series where we get the POV of Zeon forces but make it like a “Das Boot” version. I love charters like Steiner Hardy from 0080: War in the Pocket or Norris Packard 08th MS Team. These characters may have had a supporting role but they’re far more interesting than some whiny, inexperience teenagers.
Well, you jagoffs got me curious enough to watch an episode of Attack on Titan yesterday. 8 episodes later I’m hooked and confused as to what the hell is happening.

Keep watching, friend. It gets kinda slow in the middle but it picks up towards the end. I really hated Armin but he really came through.
I’m also not very smart in this topic but does it resolve after the 27 or so episodes on Netflix? If it goes along with a manga is there more story? Also, where did you all watch it before Netflix?

They should announce season 2 shortly, They kinda leave it at a cliffhanger. The manga is ongoing and they release a new one every month. It’s a lot like DBZ. I’ve been watching it on Crunchy Roll.

Usually the anime lags behind the manga and will continue till the manga is done. A few examples of anime that ended before the manga are Berserk and D. Gray-man off the top of my head. That is why I always read the manga and then go back and watch the anime if I think it is worth it.
This is also how filler episodes arise. A show can normally knock out 2-3 manga chapters each episode. Eventually the anime catches up and they need to insert filler in order to let the manga develop.
Crunchyroll and Funimation both simulcast AoT on their websites.

Where do you read manga? Purchase from comic book stores?
If I really like the series I will physically purchase them. Psyren and Yu Yu Hakasho are two that I actually bought (after reading them online first). Since it is technically illegal for websites to have them up some of my favorites sites have been closed. Spectrumnexus is a good site I used. Think it is still running. Honestly though nothing works better than using the mangasearcher app on my tablet. Downloads chapters onto your sd card than you can read it like any other book on a tablet.
