Behind the Music: Pantera

Metal is in another “'90’s”, you just need to stop listening to what’s being pushed on you by mainstream, BillBoard “rock” stations and check out bands for yourself through the Internetz. Right now we’re witnessing a revival of ThrasH (for example), which had all but died with the bastardizing of MetallicA by Bob Rock and corporate radio. Plenty of great metal out there, and it’s not played by Korn, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Drowning Pool and Slipknot.

Remember: All the good metal these days ISN’T on the radio, and with good reason.

You are right, but my problem is finding the new bands. I don’t know where to go.
A good start are forum sites like allmetalforums.com or metalhorde.net There are all these categories for each subgenre of metal out there and probably 95% of it WON’T be put on radio or played at “Grammy” type shows (rolleyes).

There are plenty of great American Metal bands out there these days, and like I said before: None of them are on the radio, within the exception of a few like KillSwitch Engage and Trivium.

Some great American Metal bands:
As I Lay Dying
Mastodon
Agalloch
Nile
Warbringer
Municipal Waste
Wolves In The Throne Room
All That Remains

That’s just getting started, brother. Another source is last.fm or Pandora.com They both generate sampling playlists for you based on what you’re listening to. Great way to find music. Turn off the mainstream radio and discover what “metal” really is.

I was a huge PanterA fan growing up and still rock their shit every once in awhile. What made me the most angry about watching that was seeing drugged out, burned out Phil Anselmo lying his ass off incoherently, barely able to keep his eyes open. Still, Phil walks a lucky line going onto yet another successful time period in his life post PanterA.

Down’s “Over the Under” was a very successful album and it makes me angry that a piece of shit like him gets success when he should be face down in his own vomit in some alleyway in New Orleans. I blame Phil for as to why PanterA broke up. His addiction and behavior is the reason.

Dimebag was our generation’s true guitar innovator. He made sounds out of that thing that most never thought possible.

That’s the True Story right there. Did they bring this up very well in the special?

PA is a POS of the first order. Too bad the dumbass retard that shot the Dimer didn’t have the story straight.

Break-up a great band just 'cause you don’t want to straighten yourself out?! How selfish and self-centered is that?

Maybe some day PA will lay his white supremiscist crap on the wrong crowd. Ahhh… one can only hope.
I honestly am suprised he’s still alive.

See this is the conundrum tho. On the one hand we all regret the breakup of pantera, but on the other hand, bands that stay together forever inevitably do something that their fan-base (or a portion thereof) derides as “selling-out.” I mean holy hell, Peter Framton is doing ads for geico now - friggin GEICO! I’m of two minds on the subject, because while I dont think Metallica changed their style for the money, my favorite of all their albums (puppets) came out almost a quarter-century ago, so yes, I do like their old stuff better. Then again, is it fair to ask a band to improve EVERY SINGLE TIME they release an album? Hell, Justice wasnt that great of a departure, stylistically speaking, from puppets, but in my opinion doesnt even hold a candle to Puppets.

I do think that Phil probably started/provoked 90% of the conflicts that led to Pantera’s breakup, whatever specific problems those were. But as far as blaming him … I dunno, creative genius is a package, take it or leave it. I dont mean that if you’re a creative genius youre a jerk - dime, for my money is right up there with hendrix, and he was by all accounts a nice guy. But maybe if Phil didnt have as many demons, his lyrics wouldnt have been as powerful, his singing as impassioned/crazy/whatever. I think it’s hard to isolate singular aspects of a person’s personality and remove them without affecting what you had left. Everybody forgets that Pantera - Dime and Vinnie and I believe rex - released a few albums before CFH, but nothing worht mentioning until phil joined the band. Who knows how much of what Phil now says is for the benefit of the cameras, but it sounds like he’s changed direction in his life, and that’s worth noting.

Pantera was a glam band once, they don’t even claim the album they made as their own lol. It’s a collectors item. I forget what it’s called.

Yeah, they have 3 glam metal albums. Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle, and I am the Night. And they are all very good and definitely worth owning. I don’t know why they brushed those albums under the rug like they did. Sure, they looked like Motley Crue, but they still rocked.

I’m also fairly amused that Phil is still alive as well. He seems to have cleaned his act up, and I think the last Down album was some of his best singing. Too bad he was such a assclown during and after the demise of Pantera.

to add to what gates said www.thrashunlimited.com

I’ve been in a real funk lately when it comes to finding some kind of music that inspires me…and then…

I just discovered this band called Kamelot…and I don’t know what the fuck kind of metal it is but I LOVE it…and it get’s me fired the F UP!!!

Check em out, let me know what you think…

Yeah, huge Pantera fan here. My group of friends were way into them in high school too. Alas, we murder true artists and Ashlee Simpson has a “successful” music career. Why look further than that to prove god hates us?

KBC, Puppets was amazing, but I think Justice was right up there with it though…I mean…fuckin Blackened is one of the hardest tracks EVER.

Need some good newer metal?

Cryptosy- Cold Hate, Warm Blood
Between the Buried and Me- Arsonist; Camilla Rhodes
Glass Casket- Chew Your Fingers
Dillinger Escape Plan- 43% Burnt; Sugar Coated Sour
Suffocation- Blind Torture Kill

Theres a show on FUSE called Talking Metal. I found some newer bands that kick ass from watching the show.

Heres a link to the show if you do not get FUSE.

Urgh, Pantera was a terrible band

you make me sad, real sad. Not to mention death/black metal are the equivalent of punk to the rock scene. Simply put I like the genres but there is a lack of musical talent in contrast to thrash and power metal. Not to mention that post reaks of being elitist because a band was SO FUCKING GREAT it revived the metal scene in the 90s. Which was dead from the rape Nirvana gave to just about every other music genre.

Pantera…whiny?

You really dont know what youre talking about.

First off, lack of talent in Death Metal? Have you ever actually LISTENED to death metal or are you just going by what the kid who sits next to you in study hall said?

Death Metal (true death metal) and thrash are close. Pantera is a good band, but not as good as people make them out to be and they definitely did not break any new ground. Stoner metal had been around since the 70’s.

Most of the people I know who hate Pantera hate them because of their ignorant, backwoods fanbase.

Stoner metal? Not that there’s anything wrong with stoner metal, but you say ‘stoner metal’ and I think Kyuss, Sabbath, COC, maybe Crowbar, Down… Pantera’s sound was too aggressive and TIGHT to be stoner metal – and that was due DIRECTLY to Dime and Vinnie. You say they ‘definitely did not break any new ground’. Maybe, maybe not. To me, their sound was unique – you hear a few notes and you know it’s Pantera. As a musician, I know how hard that is to do – damn near impossible.

Just out of curiosity, what you guys classify this band (Hostility) as? I know them all, which is why I’m curious…

Yep. Jeff Loomis is a god on guitar.
