Late to the party, but FWIW, I concur.
Did 10 min of lower stretching last night. Seller said 50 was fine, just need to organize a time and place.
Did a couple mile walk in low 40 degree weather which is notable because a) it’s warm and b) the snow is slowly melting which makes walking treacherous and exhausting, good way to start the day though.
Shoulder warmup, goblet squats, low back stretches
Jumps 1x5 (honestly forgot about the last 3 sets, will do them tonight)
DL: 135 2x5, 225 x 5, 280 x 5, 325 x 5, 365 x 5, 280 5x5 (done quickly)
Rope curls: 35 2x10
Lat band pulldown: 2x15
Rope pushdowns: 35 2 x15
Chest band flies: 2x10
Doggy training tonight so will slot the jumps and core in either before or after that. Ate dominos last night and for breakfast this morning, so feel awful and bloated, need to get out of this nearly weekly routine. Made myself some chicken thighs and veggies for lunch. Down a couple pounds, even with the dominos binge last night, for the month of Feb after gaining a few in Jan.
DL form was mediocre, per usual, but figured out some bracing on my 5x5 work. I literally need to pull myself tighter for about 2 seconds longer than I think I do (it feels like eternity). In any case, the lifting was rough today, combination of poor diet, god-awful sleep over the past few weeks, and consecutive days of pelotoning seem to have caught up. Bench tomorrow, if I’m feeling better I’ll do some barbell complex as conditioning, if not I’ll just do the bare minimum.
Bro I am definitely a binge eater as well. I remember last semester I bought a family size package of chewy chips ahoy to use as a little snack if I get fast food cravings. I ate one and next thing you know I ate the whole thing in one day along with two boxes of Little Debbie’s Oatmeal Creampies.
Definitely my weakness. I can make good food choices for a week straight then boom, 3/4 of a pizza, half a box of cheese bread, and a box of chicken gone in an hour.
At least you’re a man of good taste lol
First rep I’m just not braced hard enough, decent amount of upper back rounding (not worried here), low back seems better than upper but not great, hips go up too fast. The reset on the last rep felt and looked better.
I solved (or began to solve) most of the first rep’s problems with the rep work at the end, I’m getting closer but still the exact opposite of an intuitive movement for me.
I think you’re overcriticizing yourself on deadlifts lately
Am I? I am not trying to be overly critical part of the reason I posted that was to get feedback even though I neglected to specifically ask for it (oops)! Thank you for weighing in! I’m generally pretty critical of myself and perceive my deadlift as “weak” so it makes sense id be extra hard on myself here, without realizing it.
It seems to me like you are frustrated with your deadlift numbers and maybe overattributing it to technique. You know your body better than anyone here, and I don’t consider myself an authority, so I’m not saying that it’s not that – but I still don’t think your technique is a major issue.
Interesting, not sure I agree or disagree.
I’m both frustrated and not frustrated with them, the recent PR sets (385 x 8 and 410 x 5) have been sources of pride rather than frustration. But… my top-end is frustrating, I try and attribute that to lack of practice (which is definitely part of it) but irrespective of the attribution it would be inaccurate to say it doesn’t bother me to some degree.
As for the over-attribution, I don’t really know. It feels like my ability to transfer power in the initial phase is awful, once I get moving I feel very strong which leads me to believe that inefficiency in my brace/setup/initial movement is a significant power drain. Whether this is correctly attributed, over-attributed, or entirely misdiagnosed I think the answer is to stick with deadlifts, refine form, and get stronger.
Have you ever thought about resetting every rep and doing dead stop deadlifts?
Yea, I actually considered that during my workout today. Will implement it next block, I think.
Dead-stop or paused reps could help. For what it’s worth, I always felt that my weakpoint was from the floor, and the Internet would usually prescribe those things. Yet I pretty much pulled touch-and-go all of last year and added about twenty pounds to my 1RM (I know, not much but that’s something for me), which I never really “tested” under optimal conditions. I think there’s something to pulling high volume “lighter” (but still heavy) weights at a decent speed and using touch-and-go to enforce good reps.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing how your experiments with deadlifts go.
Interesting, all my reps after my first are usually pretty decent feeling, feel like that supports your theory. In any case, my deadlift is stronger now than it’s ever been so, despite the griping, things are going well. I’m positive I can pull 500+ right now.
Did some long jumps and was doing a few regular ones when the dog got involved. Did a bit of core after.
I love her
And now there’s a new Joywave album ![]()
I spent all day listening to Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, Big Thief’s new album, which I love. Haven’t made it Joywave yet! Feel like 2022 has already had as much good music as 2021.
I have heard a lot of overwhelmingly positive things about Big Thief’s new album today, and it’s already next on my list. I’ve never heard of Big Thief before – should I be embarrassed?
I’m not sure if any album this year will top my 2021 AOTY, but there waaaaay more of them coming close.
Lol nah, there are tons of bands I’ve never heard of! Adrianne Lenker (lead singer) is kind of an eclectic genius, she does some stuff on her own that I don’t like as much.
What was your favorite last year??
I’ll check out their album this weekend. Foxing’s album was my favorite from last year.
I don’t think I’ve heard of them and definitely haven’t listened to them! I’ll check it out
