Begin...The Rest is Easy

Lol I appreciate the joke.

Adopted her with the name Wynona but usually call her Winnie or Winifred.

100 pushups
20 min recovery peloton @ 107 watts
20 min hamstring focused, 10 min restorative, 5
Min wrist (lol) yoga
Shoveling the sidewalks and getting the cars dug out

Completely gassed, was planning on doing press tomorrow but will probably just do some conditioning and core work.

Didn’t do anything today, slept poorly, had a headache all day and am carrying a lot of fatigue. Decided it was best to give myself a bit of a rest did 20 pushups and got 7k snow steps. Press tomorrow, planning on 3x6 then a few heavy doubles or so.

Had to take my car in this morning and take a 90 min meeting from the lobby of the dealership, then get chewed out by the service person for not hearing my name called lol. Have another few hours of meetings in the afternoon so snuck in a quick workout between them. My therapist told me it sounded like I should get a new job yesterday lolsigh

Walk 12 min
Shoulder warmup, more than usual
Pullups: 4x3 (wide pronated, pronated, supinated, neutral)
OHP: bar x 10, 95 x 10, 135 x 5, 155 x 3, 165 x 6, 175 x 6, 185 x 6, 205 x 2, 215 x 2
Prowler between a few sets, I measured it as 21 paces from wall to wall. Did 3 sets of push there, pull back, which got my body engaged.

I forgot how much it takes out of me to pull heavy, nothing on me hurts (in a bad way) but everything on me is sore, especially my biceps from the poundstones + increase in pullup volume. I could barely get braced properly and had no ability to generate force today, a lot of factors here so I’m not entirely surprised nor disappointed but I was considering going for 205 x 6 last night, the first working set showed that wasn’t going to happen. Will do a peloton tonight and some accessory work for the shoulders I skipped out on.

Planning on hitting 3x6 for back squats tomorrow and then doing a widowmaker. Hoping to top out at 365 or higher but if I feel like I do today, that might not happen. Was thinking about doing BBB for my next 3-week cycle but haven’t committed to that yet, will look at a few more templates and think about what I want to do for lifting and what I want to do for eating.

Squat, limited time

Shoulder warmup
Pull-ups: 1x5
Duffalo squat: bar x 5, 145 2x5, 195 x 5, 235 x 3, 285 x 3, 315 x 6, 335 x 6, 365 x 6 (pr, I think), 255 x 20 (pr)
Quad extensions: 150 x 15, 170 x 15, 190 x 15

Had to get back to the dog and work, will try to get some BSS and RDL work in before her puppy training classes tonight, which are back on!

Got some make up work in, need to do some pushups tonight.

BSS: 3x10
RDL: 135 2x10, 185 x 10

Lower back is toast, didn’t want any more. This block was supposed to be volume but the intensity picked up a lot as my confidence grew, not a bad thing but I pushed the envelope pretty hard PRIng I’m pretty much everything except press. Will take tomorrow off except easy conditioning and stretching then probably do a bench triple/double test and maybe a deadlift test on Saturday. I forgot I had to go meet my brother 3 hours away on Sunday so I don’t want to deadlift before or after that. In any case, I have to Wednesday morning to test things and if doesn’t happen, it doesn’t really matter I have a decent idea of my maxes

Edit: puppy classes got delayed again despite lower case counts, probably just Cornell bracing for the return of the students

Don’t you love living in a community dominated by a university?

Lol no! It’s nice when the students aren’t around (like this past month) because I get the benefit of extra amenities but with fewer people but that’s only about a quarter of the year.

Good news is I’m more than 1/8th of the way through :face_in_clouds:

I assume you’re in a similar college town boat?

I suspect you’re not alone with that opinion.

Your partner’s program, right?

Nah, I don’t live in a college town. But generally the surrounding community does not appreciate a major university’s presence, regardless of the environment.

Yep, it’s 4 years but she is boarded after 3 so the 4th year is pretty much a scam, Cornell gets 200k+ in value for that final year. There are some rumblings about changes (i always whisper “unionize”) but they are unlikely to happen quickly enough. She’ll be able to work (part-time) remotely in her field in about 12-18
months, if she wants, but that will still keep us here.

How close are you to the end of the tunnel?

But generally the surrounding community does not appreciate a major university’s presence, regardless of the environment.

That makes sense. Ithaca is something of an exception but most of the surrounding area is full of conservative, ag-based towns. Very different than the 60k cars that all of the silver-spoon ivy kids are driving.

Why am I not surprised?

Seems like you’ve at least been able to enjoy some aspects of Ithaca. But you’ve got a few winters ahead of you lol

Oh jeez… maybe 2.5 or 3 years? If things go well. I’m in a slump right now.

I’m not super familiar with to what extent Cornell encroaches on the community, but most people don’t appreciate the campus police presence due to all the shenanigans the undergraduates create, and universities like to physically impose themselves with new projects and whatnot.

Yea, this winter had been really mild until the last 10 days, now we’re in a stretch of like 20 days where we’ll touch freezing maybe twice and be below it the rest of the time, including lows in the negatives like every third day. I, a hot body, do not mind the cold and since we’re past the dark stretch I’m doing okay. I’m sure coming winters will be worse and I’ll be losing my mind by March but so far, so good.

I think I remember reading something about the cause (or one of them), in relation to research/reading papers. Is it primarily school focused or is driven by other factors (money, location, weather)?

Cornell keeps itself pretty isolated, literally and metaphorically. There is an area in Ithaca called “collegetown” in the city that is on top of a hill, very easily avoidable. I, however, am not directly in Ithaca. Cornell actually is between where I am and where the city lies, so I have to drive by everything to get access to the city, which is a bit of an annoyance but not the end of the world. One of the few cool things about Cornell and where I live is that they have a Land Grant status (gives them pseudo-public status) and a top-notch vet school and the side of Cornell that I live on is right by all of those colleges, so my neighbors are pretty down-to-earth and relatable. They also love dogs/animals.

Maybe you need a good Midwest winter to kick things up a notch lol

I don’t really feel capable. I have to propose a thesis this year. I don’t love where I live, but it’s fine. I am fortunate that my stipend is relatively generous compared to other places, plus I am frugal. Things would turn around if I could publish a paper in the next three to four months, haha.

Yeah, lots of people from my high school went to a huge, in-state public land grand institution. Cornell is unlike the other Ivies in this sense. I almost applied there for undergrad but am so glad I didn’t end up doing that. Its isolation also helps it earn a fun reputation… at least its hotel school seems cool

It was -2 when I took my dog out, I think I’ll stay here. Plus this way I get to continue avoiding an entire region of the country :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s hard, the reality of your capability (which I assume is perfectly fine) is secondary to how you feel, which is it’s own complicated reality. Being able to actually know the difference between incompetence and imposter syndrome is hard when entering new arenas.

Fwiw proposing new ideas is my nightmare, I have not a single portion of my brain that comes up with novel, exciting portions of potential research.

Eh, you probably could’ve done worse. I looked at their on-campus hotel, it’s so fing expensive or I might’ve recommended it to my parents. Somewhat ironically, UNLV, where I ended up getting my BA from, was also a very good hotel school, probably should’ve studied that lol

To be fair, Ithaca winters can get pretty nasty, so who knows. I do think the right Midwest winter can make one pretty insensitive to the cold, at least. I have done some pretty stupid things in the winter before.

Yeah, I definitely suffer from imposter syndrome sometimes, but it sucks when your advisor tells you that you are behind. I often feel like STEM field is not for me but maybe in a “grass is always greener” kind of way.

A lot of research isn’t novel and or exciting :joy:

Don’t you also have to fly to Ithaca in a convoluted way? Hotel school sounds tough to me!

Bench 2/3rm test

Shoulder warmup, 30 jumping jacks
Axle bench: bar x 40, 120 x 10, 210 x 6, 260 x 5, 300 x 2, 320 x 1, 350 x 3 (pr), 370 x 3 (pr)
Tri pulldowns: 35 x 20, 45 2x10
Chest flies: 2x10
Tri overhead: 1x12, 2x10

Chest was a little sore again, in a not great way, think I was unracking too far above my head, moved my bench back a bit and that helped. I should really measure when going heavy and put some marks in my axle besides the center one. Was struggling to get tight until 320 then it clicked, 350 moved well despite a misgroove, so I figured I had at least 2 at 370, ended up getting 3. 400 is in sight, pretty pleased with this.

Got a bunch of snow walking in today, 75 pushups and 20 min of full-body stretching, definitely worked out some kinks.

Dude, that’s awesome! Looked really smooth too. Four-plate bench soon?

Windchill was -27 when I took the dog out this morning, spoke too soon.

I guess at least you know where you stand? The grass really is always greener, at least as a STEM PhD (or even with a MS) you’ll have lots of fields to explore.

Theoretically, no. Realistically, yes. Of the 10 or so flights I know people have schedule in/out of Ithaca airport (which connects to just 3 cities) 7 have been delayed or canceled. I’m leaving out of Syracuse in Feb and March, hoping that works :crossed_fingers:

Idk, I could almost certainly hit 4 plates on the axle which is 390 but am doubtful for 405. the next 8 weeks have 3 4-5 day stretches where I’ll be out of town/off-schedule, so I won’t be peaking then. I could try and YOLO it and do it in early March but I really really don’t want to fail 405 physically or mentally, especially unspotted, so I’ll probably wait til late spring/early summer.

You’ll get used to it.

I suppose, but I can’t really go back and major in something else to get the rec letters needed to apply for a PhD program in the humanities or something. Not that I would necessarily do that though. Logistics are challenging.

Oof. I’ve never been to the Northeast or flown between smaller cities. Sounds like a headache.

I agree with that. Maybe I should have specified what I meant by four-plate in this case, hehe.

Neither would I! That sounds scary. Roll of shame is not so effective in that case.
