Begin...The Rest is Easy

@wanna_be @Bagsy @boilerman @anna_5588 thank you all for the kind words, appreciate it. Also, welcome anna, I lurk on your log pretty regularly.

Went down and did
Assisted pull-ups: 1x10,1x8
Tri pulldown: 35 x 22, 18

Then picked up Mediterranean food and my gf. She gave the dog an appetite stimulant and fluids under the skin, which led to him eating more which is a huge win after a week or so of struggling to get anything down him.

Been doing shoulders and single leg stuff together but am planning on doing a full leg day tomorrow so hit shoulders by themselves. My upper back and triceps definitely were a bit fatigued/sore going into this session.

Shoulder warmup
Facepulls 3x15
Axle OHP: 120 x 5, 170 3x5, 1x10 (video)
Band lateral/front raises: red 2x12, black 1x8
Hang cleans: 95 x 10, 135 2x5, 185 2x5, 135 1x13
Assisted chins: 1x5

Did some wrist and shoulder stretching to work on my horrible front rack, need to watch some tutorials on how to clean, I don’t think my form is awful but it certainly isn’t great. Also put some oil on my bar and gave it a wipe down, which id been putting off for exactly no reason.

Took about a 4 mile walk in some beautiful weather and then spent 45 min cleaning my dirty ass grill today before almost bailing on my squats, ended up getting them done though.

Shoulder warmup
BS: 245 5x10
BSS: 1x10, 20 2x10
Band pull throughs: 3x12
RDL: 225 3x10 (straps)
Calf raises: 135 x 50
Assisted Chins: 2x5

My legs were a bit dead going into this after the deadlifts, cleans and extra walking, glad I got it done though. 265 should be fine next session given a bit more recovery prior. One of my friends brought over his bow flex dumbbells that go up to 55, so that should help diversify things a bit. Tomorrow is going to just be active recovery, pretty gassed, need to eat and stretch.

Took the last two days off, did a walk/hike with a decent amount of elevation gain that was about 3 miles yesterday, ended the day with 11k+ steps, good way to get movement without adding a lot of stress. Definitely got helped the soreness in my legs.

Real random shit today, was planning on benching but let other people do their thing instead. 4 people is too many for the amount of equipment I have but it’s entertaining.

Shoulder/Bench warmup
Axle rows: 170 3x10
Rope tbar-esque rows: 95 4x10
DB bench: 52.5 x 15
Tricep kickbacks: 15 x 15
Axle curls: 50 3x15
Reverse Axle curls: 50 3x10
Assisted Pullups: 3x8 (straps for last 2 sets)
Tricep pulldown: 45 x25, x15
Straight arm pulldown: 45 2x10

A real hodgepodge and probably not super effective at doing anything but I figure I got my back and arms worked some at least, pullups are moving much better, will start adding intensity/subtracting assistance soon.

Had a pretty active day at the park yesterday but didn’t lift, hit a bench session with minimal back today. Was feeling rough from the activity/pizza/ice cream cake that came with a friend finishing her NP degree.

Shoulder warmup
BP: 135 2x10, 205 x 5, 225 x5, 255 x3, 295 x3, 315 x2, 335 x1, 345 x2, 225 x 17
Tri pulldowns: 35 3x10, 1x20, 70 1x8 (realized i didn’t want this much weight)
Rows: 135 4x10 (watched a Meadows video on how to do them, definitely hammered the lats)
Pullups: 2x5 Green band, 1x5 purple band

Think I did a bit more but don’t remember what it was. Felt good to push intensity a bit on bench, don’t think i’ve ever doubled 345 before but I’ve definitely been strong enough to do so, probably had a 3rd rep pretty comfortably. The 225 set was done immediately after 345 with only enough time to put the plates away, stopped a rep short of failure there too. Good to know I haven’t lost much upper end strength, 365 was there easy, 375 probably would’ve been pretty doable too.

Took about a 4 mile walk, watched the FA cup match (pretty dull), then convinced myself to squat. I didn’t have it in me to convince myself to do 265 5x10, so I mixed it up. I was messing with my stance and grip in the first half, need to commit to a style at some point or at least be able to do one well.

Shoulder warmup
BS: 135 x 5, 225 x 5, 275 2x3, 315 x 2, 365 x 5 (close to a PR, probably), 225 x 24 (definitely a rep PR)
Band pull throughs: 4x10
BSS: 3x10
SL RDL: 3x10
Pull-ups: purple band 1x10

Pull-ups each session is making me better at them, who knew. Put myself through the ringer on that last squat set, my squat looks terrible but I only really lost tightness on the last rep, legs had more in them. Kind of liked the set tbh

Nice squats.

Are you a big soccer fan or watched the match just because?

I jumped on the Leicester bandwagon early on in the year they ended up winning the EPL and have followed it somewhat closely since then. Watched somewhat regularly prior to that when I lived in Europe. I don’t watch a ton (~1 game a week) but have learned to enjoy it. I really don’t hate any team (man city rubs me the wrong way despite loving Mahrez) so i can watch a Bundesliga, Italian, or EPL game at anytime and enjoy it. Espn+ is great value for the first two of those leagues. Been to a few MLS games in Seattle, it’s entertaining but the quality is sooo much lower.

Do you watch it on a regular basis? You used to play right?

Aua.

I religiously followed in high school. That declined when I got to college. But yeah, playing and watching were my life. I always have been an avid Arsenal and German national team fan. I went to London for a few days in 2014 and got to see Arsenal play in the FA Cup semi-final, which was awesome. Where did you live in Europe?

I hear you on the MLS quality. I can never enjoy watching it. I went to one match in person and thought some of my teams were less sloppy…

Did you also stop watching after quitting yourself? I was a football fan growing up and went to countless matches (mainly Hannover 96). After I quit playing myself my interest declined more and more and I started to hate the commercial circus around the game. Today I can’t even tell you the league scores anymore and the only games I watched in the last couple of years were those I was “forced to” because people I was hanging out with were watching. I have lost all interest by now tbh and even if I see a game it feels a lot more dull and less engaging than it used to. When I’m home visiting my parents I’ll watch the old home team on occasion but mainly to have beers and sausages with the fellas, haha.

I think playing and watching regularly go hand-in-hand, but I attribute my lack of engagement to not wanting to spend ages catching up on the 4-5 years I’ve missed. I know it sounds lazy… yet diving back into it feels wrong in some way. It might be different if I were living in Europe though.

There are definitely things wrong with the game today that did not occur as much to me in high school.

Maybe. I mean it’s obviously more popular here and there is no sport that comes even close to football in terms of viewership etc. Although I am noticing a shift and I think football is losing a little bit of engagement with the younger generations who aren’t as fascinated with it anymore.

That’s true for sure. I am kind of disgusted with a lot of aspects surrounding the professional sport and am no longer able to overlook them.

Hey now, let me dream, hahaha.

Really, though, there are so many more ways to engage when the pinnacle is in your backyard. Only so much one can do in the US. The situation is reversed when I speak with Germans who follow American football. It’s a fun hobby for them that they may even take seriously, but it is different if one lives in America and already has an interest. Definitely cultural. Beyond actually being able to attend the matches I think of tailgating and all the other related activities.

I also get that sense.

Idk if I’m missing something, but it feels like “American culture” seems a bit more impatient than say “Chinese culture”

Football (soccer) is very low scoring compared to basketball or American football and requires more attention to detail to appreciate the beauty

Hard disagree. American football is a way more complicated game if you really want to understand the nuances.

It’s more nuanced strategically, but there’s more “action”.

I might not understand the game but I see 300lb behemouths sprinting like track athletes and tackling each other → exciting to watch

It’s harder to appreciate the intricate footwork… and ppl aren’t allowed to hurt each other …

Interesting take, I’d still argue the it’s exactly the other way around, haha. Apart from the strategically nuanced part.

American football is incredibly complicated. Quarter backs are among the smartest athletes anywhere.

Definitely contradicts the “dumb jock” narrative haha

It’s kinda like boxing. At it’s core, it’s simple “hit the other guy and don’t get hit”, but if you actually want to dive into it, it’s “the sweet science” and there’s SO much going on under the hood.

I can watch a game of American football and appreciate it, but I hear people talking plays and routes and I’m lost…and I even PLAYED the game in high school…for one season…because I was awful, haha.
