Anyone ever tried “Beamish Irish Stout”, I’ve heard good things but can’t find it anywhere.

Love it. They sell it at stores around MD but you can probably find somewhere to order it for you if nothing near you has it.

I was gonna ask, given where you live, if you ever get the chance to go to the GABF…one day I will.
This is two years in a row that I will be missing it. Grrr.
One event I am sorry to have missed this year but really want to go to next year is Savor DC. A few co workers went this year and were blown away by the food and beer pairings.

I’m in MD, do you know anyplace near Bowie I could check. I tried Rip’s (they seem to have just about everything else)but no luck so far.

Food and beer pairings would be great. Sad to say that most of my food at GABF tends to be the pretzel necklace I wear in.

Don’t tell me that has any relation to pearl necklaces.

One of my co-workers lives in PG county. He was able to order a case from a store in Fort Washington. I guess you have to get a full case but it is pretty reasonable…

Quite a fitting username I must say.

From what I hear at Savor the majority of the pairings are oysters, steak, and other various seafood. Last year they sold out 10 minutes after they opened tickets to the public.

All you need to know about Beamish right here. Genuine ad from the 60’s

Awesome, I love old commercials.

Love it. Most beer snobs look down on the Irish stouts, but I enjoy Beamish and Guinness

(although don’t let anybody tell you that Guinness is “better in Ireland”, because I had several pints at the brewery itself and it tastes the exact same as anywhere else)

Wheats are almost always a good starting point…

There are other directions to head than to the hops. You could try going towards the malty end of the spectrum and see if she likes stouts, porters, bocks, etc… Does she like chocolate, coffee, hazelnut, etc? These are flavors to be found on the darker side of things.

You could also try beers of the Belgian variety. Dubbels, Triples, Quads… How 'bout some fruity Lambics or Geuze? She may even like some sours like Flanders Red or some of the Wild Ales.

Expanding the palate and changing ones whole definition of what beer is can be a slow process…but well worth it.
Delayed response, busy week…she does like Belgians, and occasional Reds, and stouts, but bocks are a no, and surprisingly hasn’t liked a couple of the Chocolate’s I’ve brought home- She does like lambics, so I’ve been trying a variety, we’re going to a tasting tomorrow that will have Sprecher Amber and Oktoberfest, Founder’s cherry and Breakfast Stout, so it should be a good range, and if there is anything she doesn’t like I usually get to finish it.

I agree- it has been a question of whether or not I should expose her to this, because I have had the experience where I went to grab a beer, have to settle for something else only to walk into the living room and find my wife drinking my first choice.

Speaking of the GABF, my dad and stepmom volunteer to pour almost every year, free samples of whatever brewery you’re with, some time to walk around to try the others. A couple of the places they poured for they’ve visited after and the owners remembered them, so they’ve been able to get free dinner and private tours at a couple of places in Colorado and Wyoming. Sounds like a pretty good gig, we’re still trying to find a year to get out there for it.

Def don’t agree there. Sure the brewery is nothing special, but if you go to a proper old Irish country pub the guinness there is far better than some random “bar” anywhere else in the world.

You’re entitled to your opinion. When it comes to anything dealing with flavour or aroma there is no “right” or “wrong”, but IMO if a bar properly cleans its taps and lines then Guinness tastes the exact same no matter where you go.

I want to let you Americans know just how lucky you are.

I was recently in the great state of Ohio for a business trip, and walked into a Target store (for Canadians, this store is roughly similar to what K-Mart is). Lo and behold, an entire aisle of beer that I had never been able to get my hands on anywhere in Canada! Great Lakes Eliot Ness, Edmund Fitzgerald, Magic Hat…the list goes on. They were all dirt cheap!

Edmund Fitzgerald is now the second best porter I’ve ever had (The first is “Tokyo Black” by YoHo brewing in Japan).

In Ontario, we either have to go to “The Liquor Control Board” or “The Beer Store” to get our beer. The former imports next to no US Microbrews, and with the latter you’re stuck with 90% Molson/Labatt/Coors.

You guys are lucky. Don’t take it for granted!
