Damn it… I skipped today and am now regretting it…

No, @anna_5588. No regrets, only action. Decide and be confident.

You’ve decided, now be confident.

Well done on the PR and that brutal widow maker.

Regarding this. Do you think it’s due to fatigue from the Deadlifts? Have you ever tried pull ups first in a back workout?

That sounds really painful. Good job getting through.

@throwawayfitness, @hustlinghat93, @Koestrizer - Thank you all for the congratulations. I’m nearing the end of Week 2, and I’m still feeling good, so full steam ahead!

@hustlinghat93 - re: pull-ups. To be honest, I find pull-ups (i.e., pronated grip) difficult regardless—my back and lats are weak, and I know I use my biceps quite a bit on chin-ups (i.e., supinated grip), which I find easier by comparison. But the combination of deadlifts, pull-ups, and trap work on Thursdays makes it worse, to be sure. FWIW, it’s not unexpected and it doesn’t really bother me, even if I do comment on it from time to time.

5/3/1 & Widowmakers - c6w2d5

Thursday - 02 December 2021
Workout: Hard conditioning, 1435-1310 (35 minutes)

BFP - red - 4x25

10 rounds of:
a) Sled push - 50 yds, 135 + sled = 222 lbs
b) 10 1-pump burpees
c) 10 24-kg KB swings
Time: 22:17

Almost beat the rain! The driveway was slick, not sure if that made the sled push easier or harder. Either way, I’m glad I bought new shoes a few weeks back: having some tread certainly doesn’t hurt!

Much faster with the sled circuit today, which I attribute to getting through individual burpees and swings faster by doing 10 at a time (rather than 20) and back-to-back, even if the total work is the same.

Or maybe the wet asphalt really did make that sled push faster…

And for dinner, an @throwawayfitness sandwich:

Because I think he did a couple squats today. Oh, and because I did some deadlifting and stuff.

Man, 95x20 is no freaking joke. The PR you had on your top set was good, but I’m honestly just as impressed with this. Nice job

I find the same: I can do many more reps with supinated or neutral grip than with pronated grip. If you ever find the fix for this, please let me know!

Everything tastes better when placed between two waffles. Except another waffle. Then it’s really just overkill at that point.

Erm, what? Why is that a thing?

@atlas13 - Thanks, my man! The rep PR was nice, but I agree: that Widowmaker was awesome, particularly because I only got 95x18 a few weeks ago in the lead up to this anchor. It was a sweet victory.

@oldnattychris - Maybe: do more pull-ups to do more pull-ups?

@antiquity - Hm; a waffle between waffles? I hadn’t thought of that before. And now I’m going to have to try it, of course…

@dagill2 - An “@throwawayfitness sandwich”? Eggs and bacon between waffles—I mean, duh! Why not!?!

A few weeks back he mentioned that’s how he likes to eat 'em, so when I realized that was on the menu last night, I made it up that way in honor of his crazy back-to-back 20- and 50-rep squats sets.

I couldn’t actually eat it like a sandwich though: wouldn’t fit in my mouth! (In my defense, those are full-size Belgian waffles made fresh in a deep-dish waffle iron. No “Leggo my Eggo!” toaster waffles here, thank you very much!)

I mean, I thought bacon with pancakes, syrup and strawberries was gross until I tried them in a caff in New York so what do I know?

5/3/1 & Widowmakers - c6w2d6

Friday - 03 December 2021
Workout: Bench, 0750-0855 (65 minutes)

Warm-up
Throws + jumps

Begin: 0809; End: 0849; Duration: 40 minutes
Bench - 105x5, 130x5, 155x5 | 180x3, 205x3, 230x8 (rep PR) | 180x20
Standing DB press - 2x35 lbs - 18, 15, 12
Chin-up - BW - 15, 15, 15 + 2
Deficit reverse lunge - L/R - 2x20 lbs - 25, 20, 10
Band pushdown - red - 30
Cable crunch - 50 - 20
OA row - L/R - 45 - 20, 10

Assistance totals:
Push - 75 reps
Pull - 77 reps
Single-leg/core - 75 reps

That felt pretty good today: another rep PR and a solid follow-up WM. Closest records I have are 210x8 as a 5+ set and 235x3 as a 1+ set (both in May 2020), so 230x8 is something. I totally dominated the 8 reps and I definitely had 1 or 2 in the tank. (But, yes, Widowmaker…) The 20-rep follow-up was solid, didn’t have to think too hard about getting the bar up until reps 19 and 20, and even those were super smooth, so very happy with today’s benching.

Also happy with chin-ups today: that last set says 15, but the last rep hit the Simo scale, and my eyes were screwed so tight I’m not sure I actually cleared the bar, so after a slow eccentric, I dropped, took a 15-second pause, and did two more reps just because I was annoyed. I am so, so close to knocking out 45 reps in three sets I can taste it… Maybe next week?

As usual, daily work and Pwn’s The Last Castle later today.

@dagill2 - don’t want to derail @anna_5588’s log, so:

If you just want to understand something of her philosophy, The Virtue of Selfishness is a collection of essays in a Q&A-type format, most of which are written by Rand herself and each of which provides some clarity on a particular topic.

Of her fiction, We the Living or Anthem are relatively quick reads, and Fountainhead is a classic. You could always start with Atlas Shrugged, but I’ve been trying to finish that for—no joke—something like 25 years. (I’m stuck in Galt’s monologue, which is perhaps the definitive statement of Rand’s philosophy, even if not the most succinct.)

And though I don’t really want to derail my log either, I’ll just say: I’m no Rand-ophile, but I do identify with aspects of her system and I find her work offers opportunities for deep self-reflection, given my faith and Jesus’ others-first teaching. In that respect then, I think I can at least appreciate that conflicts might arise given your “lefty liberal tendencies.”

Anyway, that’s that. Let’s get back to lifting! (And waffles. Can’t forget all of the new and interesting ways to eat waffles!)
