This band was good but overshadowed by the big four grunge bands.
I was watching an interview a few years ago where Jerry Cantrell said that when Nirvana broke the door open for the Seattle 4 it blew everyone’s minds, 'cause they thought if any of the bands were gonna make it it woulda been Mud Honey or Screaming Trees.
Each of the above bands had at least one song that hit radio and I thought was gonna blow the doors open for their careers, but they remained in relative anonymity. And while this isn’t my kind of music, I heard this song on the radio probably 5 years ago and thought this chick was gonna be HUGE. I mean like Britney Spears big. But, Apparently the album got pulled and nothing ever happened-
This beat is so bananas as a club anthem it’s ridiculous.
lol! After reading more posts, I’m starting to wonder who the bands that actually got recognition are…
Maybe my standards are too high. I mean, should I be bringing up the Dandy Warhols an now?
Or how about DJ Shadow?
Aphex Twin?
The Tragically Hip?
Avalanches?
Jurassic 5?
Maybe they could’ve/should’ve been bigger…
Meanwhile, I can’t find good online examples for the artists I’m thinking of in terms of no-love: Starflyer 59 in my original post; Eddie Harris (“Get On Down” off of “I Need Some Money” for instance, is an experience everyone should have and the online version I found has been edited down to the point of being totally pointless); David Holmes’ album “Let’s Get Killed” before “Gritty Shaker” got associated with Ocean’s Eleven (“Radio 7” being the prime example).

However, I did find The Herbaliser…
No offense man, but most of the bands you listed never really recieved the initial exposure to be considered having flown under the radar. The radar completely missed 'em. Do like the picks though.

None taken. My understanding is that planes that fly under the radar are rendered invisible and go completely undetected as they never show up on any radar screens at any point.

…That blew my fucking mind…
Fuses are meant to blow before any real damage can be done. Hopefully yours is the kind that can be reset. Good luck with that…
Oh, and once you’ve recovered whatever’s left of your mind I’m sure you’ll be sure to share the names of which bands you think “the” radar completely missed. Just curious.

To me a band has to have had at least one song get some national exposure like radio play or heavy rotation [even if it’s brief] on a music channel yet never really click with the public like you expected. We could all list indie bands or underground hip-hop acts all day, but if they never really got the chance to be “seen” then they never really could be on the radar.
Take the first song posted in this thread. I remember seeing “Unsung” on lead-ins to shows on MTV in like '92 or '93 while watching Beavis and Butthead, and saw the video a few times and really liked their sound. I figured they’d be around and become well known, but it never happened. That - to me - is flying under the radar.
Good one. Jake E. Lee right after he left Ozzy.
And re- King’s X, I played guitar also and you are correct. They weren’t unknown in that capacity, only commercially. Although their first album “Out of the Silent Planet” is as heavy and “radio friendly” as it gets IMO. Good God, between Tybor’s solos and Pinnick’s 12 string bass, it hits like a sledgehammer.

To OP, really wouldn’t put Tiger Army on that list personally, they are huge in the psychobilly scene, especially 'Merica.
You’re right. A friend of mine informed me of this. I didn’t realize they had such a following. Psychobilly is pretty cool…I like the “zombified 1950’s greaser” motif a lot of the bands use
