I’ve done bounty hunting twice. Both times I was hired by the Bails Bondsman to provide some extra ‘muscle.’ I made $100 for each capture. The Bails Bondsman in question is the one holding the bond, so it behooves him to recapture the criminal and get him back to jail. If not, he has to fork out the cash from his own pocket.
The cops aren’t too interested in helping. They already had the guy in jail once. You (Bails Bondsman) are the one that let him go.
The first guy I helped catch swore he wouldn’t go back to jail. Anyone trying to take him down would have to kill him. He promised he wouldn’t be dying alone either.
We arrived at the place we suspected he was staying around 9:00 AM on a Sunday morning. Believe me, these characters aren’t going to be stirring at 9:00 on a Sunday. Church isn’t part of their religion.
When we got to the house, we went over our game plan. One guy - an off-duty cop - was going to knock on the door and say he has $50 for our bad guy. To make it more believable, he’ll flash $50 in cash. He’ll say he owes our bad guy the money and has to give it to him in person.
My job was to stand by the back door in case he tried to run. I was given a can of mace, an axe handle, and an old revolver that looked like it would explode just as quick as shoot. I didn’t bother taking the revovler with me. It was liable to get me killed quicker then anything else.
We take our positions and off-duty cop knocks on the door. The girlfriend answers. There is some back and forth with the girlfriend insisting bad guy ain’t home. Finally, she says, “Hold on, let me ask him if he’s home.”
At this point, she enters the house while leaving the door open. As soon as she does that, everyone rushes into the house. Our bad guy is caught sleeping. No fuss, no muss.
The second kid tried to run and I had to chase him down. I was told if he ran, taz him when I caught him. That was his punishment for running.
Well, I caught him but there was no way I was going to taz him. He was a simple kid that was scared shitless. By the time I caught up to him he was bawling his eyes out. Poor guy was about 19, not too bright, small, with red hair. Jail had to be a real bitch for him.
I didn’t bother with bounty hunting after that. It isn’t what I would call a rewarding job. However, if that is what you want to do, contact a Bails Bondsman and let him know you are looking for a job. He’ll either give you some work or put you in contact with someone that does.
But be careful. Not all bounty hunters are created equal and many don’t exercise very high moral standards.
