Wait, the Thing was a remake? How the fuck did I miss that? Until this is confirmed, I don’t believe it.

As far as the movie, it was about 20 years ahead of its own time. The special effects still stand today…and that is REALLY saying something. It is a true classic in every sense of the word.
Alright I just checked it out … there was a movie made in 1951 called “The Thing from Another World” which was adapted from the same book as “The Thing” … it’s technically a remake but … not. I guess John Carpenter stayed closer to the story of the book than the 1951 movie did…
You lose 40 cool points for not knowing and then having to check it out to confirm it.
well technically I DID know it … I’m the one who pointed it out, but then when X didn’t know it I thought I might be wrong (the dude knows a shit ton about movies), and upon further inspection that’s what I came up with… so there

Here’s my problem with most movies recently: They’re all remakes of movies and shows from 20 years ago; or adaptations of books.

Fuckin BTTF was original. Goonies was a fuckin bad ass movie. Raiders of the Lost Ark was amazing. It seems we don’t have imagniative directors/screenplay writers anymore. What we get is recycled garbage with loud explosions and “uh-ma-zing” special effects.

I remember thinking as a kid how cool it would be to be Marty McFly. He was what? 17 in those movies? Fucking traveling through time. Uhm, Hello, that’s pretty fuckin sweet. Those kids in Goonies? My age when I saw that movie, maybe a few years older, searching for fucking One Eyed Willies rich stuff. How fucking cool was that damn movie? Even the dead Fed in the freezer was a cool scene and it didn’t require anything over the fucking top special effects or an exhorbinant amount of blood and violence. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen Raiders of the Lost Ark. Shit the first 3 Indiana Jones movies were the shit! Even though the 3rd one came out in the 90’s.

Predator came out in the 80’s too. And now we get Predators? Aliens was FAR superior to Alien. And now James Cameron gave us Avatar. Fuck off James, you done fell off ya game son. Aliens was waaaay fuckin’ cooler than Avatar. I remember the first time seeing that movie and Bill Paxton freakin out yellin “Game over man! Game over.” I can’t tell you how many times I used that line to opponents while playing sports as I just delivered the death blow or something (especially while talkin trash in hockey).
Dude, I can’t figure if it’s 'cause todays filmamkers generally lack talent or that they’re so full of themselves they’re collectively sitting around a table saying “You know what movie/show/cartoon was awesome? [Insert 80’s movie/show/cartoon and soundtrack]. You know what would make it better? ME!”. Either way, it’s getting old. For the most part they’re completely fucking up classics. I read the other day that they’re talking about doing a Jaws remake with Tracy Morgan playing Roy Scheider’s role. Really think about that. If this actually happens I will never watch another new movie again. Strictly dvd’s.
Dude I’m with you. Staying with the originals. Imagine Tracy Morgan saying, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat,” the goofy way he would. They’d make it into a spoof of Jaws, not a Jaws remake…

The thing is, we as movie watchers are so in tune with movie genre and so oversaturated with entertainment, yet we still want more. Except for the couple brilliant original works that come out each year, studios have two choices to meet this insatiable demand- either make sequels, reboots, and adaptations, OR make “original” movies that are really reworked, cliche riddled farces.

They choose to go with the former, and to tell you the truth I don’t blame them. They spend billions of dollars each year producing and marketing these movies, money that comes from public shareholders that executives must answer to if the movie flops, especially with the economy being the way it is right now. Why not go with a safer bet, a movie that will already have a following the moment the project is greenlit?
I tend to disagree and you’ll see why when I bring in the “Saturday cartoon” factor. Let’s face it, in the 80’s, all of us would wake up early to watch Saturday morning cartoons. They were the SHIT! Fuckin Smurfs, Thundercats, He-Man and all that jazz… They were fuckin awesome. Hannah Barbera, Warner Brothers reruns were awesome. Now they have SHIT cartoons on Saturday mornings. Either there’s a lack of imagination and talent or the studios and networks are passing over creativity for marketability. So I guess I don’t disagree with you over-all, but I still think there’s more of a lack of imagination and creativity than anything else.

Jaws was awesome, but the first one only, and that’s it. I find it a shame that they totally ruined the movie with all those sequels. I mean, WILL THE HELL THE SHARK HAS TO EXPLODE EVERY TIME ? If a remake really comes out, I just hope it’s by the original director and that it has some very good actors, I can’t imagine Tracy Morgan delivering that line, or some other lame ass actor playing an epic character like Quint.

My favorite thing to do is watch “old” movies with my kids. Star Wars, Jones, and goonies have all been huge hits. I have to find my Back to the Future DVD’s, I know they will like them.

Oh I’m not removing all blame from Hollywood, just saying there’s plenty of blame to go around. Just playing devil’s advocate since these kinds of discussions always turn into “Hollywood sucks!” When first pointing fingers point it at the person in the mirror and all that.

The imagination is still there, but the ability to put it on paper and ultimately the screen can be slipping. I’m currently reading a screenwriting book and the author admits as much, saying that creative writing education has suffered in the past few decades.

Doug…I remember reading somwhere that major studios release in reality only a few movies a year. Now that they cost around one-hundred fifty mill/per and up how much of a risk do you really want to take?. I don’t blame them for taking the easy route either, a few really expensive duds in a short amount of time can kill you correct?

I don’t think there will ever be a cure for cheesy lines. Who wants to watch Hamlet type movies all the time, once in a while fine.

One of my favorite authors is David Gemmel. If they ever make one of his Druss books into a movie it would be the chessiest movie ever, however when I read it it’s awesome, don’t know why I feel this way. Images on the screen as opposed to the images I create in my head while reading has something to do with it i suspect.

When are you going to get on the big screen Doug?

Let’s face it…movie goers today are fucking spoiled. They will go see a movie like Transformers with special effects that would have made anyone in 1985 shit bricks along with a story deeper than any 80’s action movie and they will walk away saying, “It SUCKED!!!”.

You almost HAVE t go with the remakes because what else will satisfy these fuckers?

Every movie can’t be some mega-super-awesome blockbuster that makes waves like T2.

The bottom line is I bought one of those dvds with old Saturday morning cartoons…and we were all idiots back then. The tightest one of all of them that still stands at all was the Mr. T cartoon show and the Smurfs. Everything else was more garbage than some of us would like to admit…but we ate it up back then like candy.

Then those same people grow up and ignore how lame some of that crap was back then (I mean, seriously, could ANY of us sit through Superfriends today?) while tearing down decent attempts today.

While they were good for that time period, once again, their stuff does not hold up like Loony Tunes does. You can still put in a Tom and Jerry flick or Bugs bunny and still laugh…even though you’ve been watching the same shit for 20 years or more.

There is a reason you don’t see those cartoons anymore. I bought Animaniacs on dvd and it just isn’t as “innovative” as we thought it was in the 90’s.

I still watch loony toons now and again and I still love em’, no shame in admitting that. Johhny Quest was the best. It came on right after Fat Albert. That’s just weird I can remember that shit.

If you want innovative PX youtube search: The Banana Splits, Sigmund and the sea monsters, the bugaloos, HR puff n’ stuff…who ever came up with that show was puffinn’ stuff alright lol. These shows blew me away when I was a little dripper.

I still watch looney tunes and tom and jerry, and scooby doo for that matter. My daughter really likes the older stuff. I got excited one day because I saw thundercats listed in the on-demand section. I hate to admit it, but it was unwatchable. I loved that cartoon when I was a kid. My wife was in the room and asked “Did you really used to watch this?”. I tried to explain but couldn’t, it was bad.

Even though Loony Tunes and Animaniacs referenced pop culture during their respective time periods, I think LT holds up because what they referenced still holds up. You may not listen to any of the guys they referenced in music from the 40’s and 50’s…but they did it in a way to where it is still interesting. Referencing pop culture today simply can not stand the test of time…because our pop culture is POPCORN. Our celebrities are all flash in the pan one hitters who no one will be talking about in 5-10 years. Does anyone think people will care who Brittany Spears is in the year 2050?

Just like most songs today will not stand the test of time either, maybe we should avoid thinking the time we live in is so significant.

One of my favorites was VOLTRON (w/the lions of course). I was always the Black Lion, for obvious reasons…(and not because I’m black, because I’m NOT!..LOLOL!..I was just the one who had the most leadership skills at age 7!!!) The car version was like the difference between watching Go-Bots and Transformers…kinda the same, but not so much (at all)! I blame much of this on the invention of POWER RANGERS!..LOL…everything after that as far as Saturday Morning Toons…STR8 GARBAGE! Thank God for BOOM!
