Attempts at Strongman

Cat is terrified of dog. Dog is two and a half or so and is a rescue type adoption. He is trying to be submissive to the kitten, but the kitten will whack him on the head and run away.

Awesome training session today. However I’m about to head out snowshoe-ing with the pup, and my legs might die.

1/21 lower body

Front squat
Barx10
135x10
185x1
225x3
275x1
315x1
365x3x3 pretty sure that’s a big PR
225x15 immediately followed by 225x30 high bar

Power clean from hang
135x3
185x3
205x3
225 for 6 triples
245x1
275xreal close, but I didn’t really want to chase and catch it lol.

Nearly every workout you seem to do something crazy that makes me feel sick.

Glad it worked for you, I did the whole kiefer & sauerkraut thing for a couple weeks and noticed no difference with anything. However, I was not drinking a GOMAD or anything else that really gave me bloating in the first place.

you making the kiefer yourself?

No sir, it costs about the same as the milk and yogurt habit it’s replacing.

Lol who knows if it has anything to do with fermented food. It might just be cutting back on lactose. I only switched because the store was out of the yogurt I usually buy, so I grabbed a few bottles of kiefer instead.

Weird training day. @littlesleeper @strongmanvinny2 could you guys please explain why I can waiter walk so much but am so horrible at overhead pressing?

1/23 press
Wanted to push press, but racks (for the first time ever) were taken. Decided to work DB clean and press instead

DB clean and press, clean once
100x3x3
These felt absolutely horrible. I have done more weight for more reps with much less effort. I think forearm fatigue from all the cleans on Saturday is the culprit. Either way though, this was quite discouraging. So I decided to get some shoulder work a different way.

DB waiter walk, 1 arm at a time
100 lbs3x80’ each arm
100 lbsx5x160’ each arm

Dips
Bwx5
+45Ɨ5
+90 for 6 sets of 8

Front plate raises
25x100 RP
First 50 I focused on keeping my elbows locked and raising all the way over my head. Had to take little breaks. Last 50 were done without stopping. Around eye level.

Your overhead strength is interesting…

This would be no real issue for me:

While there would be absolutely no chance I could complete 160’ with holding this weight OH:

I’m sure it is in your log somewhere, but what is your current 1RM for bench? One possibility could be lagging triceps. I think I remember you doing some close grip work over 300lbs so it seems you should have good triceps strength.

Other things that come to mind would be your form or ability to brace. If I don’t get my full body tightness, the weight doesn’t seem to move. I’m also a ā€˜lean-back’ presser. The cue of pushing your head through as you press limits the weight I can use in a big way. I’ve been fortunate enough to build up chest and front delt strength relatively easily compared to my other lifts. I’ve just been able to put in the work and watch my numbers climb. Never had to introduce any super-secret-special sets and reps to build this strength.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help, Vinny likely has some better ideas for this.

I have done 120 for sets of 10, cleaning each rep. Today was just an off day for DB clean and press, I hope.
I’m just surprised that my strict press is so low.
Not sure what max bench would be currently. I’ve done 275-315 with a slingshot and a close grip for sets of 10+ pretty regularly. Also dips have been going well, able to do quite a bit of volume and weight.
I’ll post a strict press and a push press video sometime soon, and maybe the flaws will be more apparent.

Well the strength is definitely there. I don’t have access to DB’s over 70lbs so I’m not even sure I would be able to press this. But I agree, this is likely an outlier of a workout. I too am surprised that your BB strict press isn’t better.

My db press is like a leaping jerk and catching it overhead lol. I doubt much pressing is actually happening. Maybe I just need more time. I’ve only only really trained overhead pressing for the past 8-9 months or so. Every other time before that was once in a blue moon.

At least you’re not like me and prefer to overhead press 315 rather than deadlift it.

No, I’d be totally fine with that problem.

1/24 Pulls

Snatch from hang
Barx5
95x3
115x1
135x1
155x1
185x1
205xmiss
135 for 5 doubles

Clean from hang
135x2
185x2
205x1
225x1
245x1
265x1
275xmiss
205 for 5 doubles

Conventional deadlift, no belt
225x1
315x1
405x1
495 for 3 singles

Pull up SS/bent over row
+45/225 for 12,10,8,6,4,2

Progress pic. They’ll probably all be from the back so I can keep the front and legs a secret for the transformation challenge.

That yoke is looking swole my brotha!

The goal is to have a built in travel pillow.

Jumped on top of a 48" stack of wood at work in a pair of wranglers and work boots. I think the focus on pulls is paying off.

Your work capaciry is seriously out of this world

It’s kind of you, but I still don’t believe you. These bigger sets are happening in micro-sets of 2-5 with 3-15+ seconds of deep breathing between the micro sets. I’m not putting the bar down, but the sets take a while lol.
If I can get to a point where I can do them straight, I’ll feel better about my conditioning.
