I have an APBT who just turned 2 years old. I am interested in training him to pull. Do you have any recomendations? Training or diet? Do you do anything with your Amstaff? (if that’s what your dog is, looks like an Amstaff anyway)
Only slightly relevant but check out “Doggone Big” - one of TC’s Atomic Dogs.
He’s a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
I’ve had him pull a little Louie Simmons style weight sled, but not in competition.
Nutrition? I don’t know if you’d want to go through all the trouble I do. I don’t know if anybody would want to go through all the trouble I do.
In any event, I feed him 5 times a day (yep, that’s rght, just like a bodybuilder!). I believe that controlling insulin levels is just as important for dogs as it is for humans.
He gets Inova dog food (cool food because the first three ingredients are whole proteins) and chicken breast for the first meal.
The second meal is kibble and live culture yogurt.
The third meal is salmon and steamed vegetables (left over from my dinner from the night before), with added Carlson’s fish oil.
The fourth meal is leftovers from my dinner, which is some kind of meat and steamed vegetables, again with added fish oils.
The last meal is Low-Carb Grow!, natural peanut butter, Fiber one Cereal, and Missing Link canine nutrient with glucosamine made into a paste with water.
Am I a nut? Probably, but this dog is not only my dog, but my hobby, too. He’s a product of nutritional engineering.
I think that is terribly cool how he is fed with precision like a bodybuilder! Every time I view that avatar the coat is so smooth looking it reminds me of an eel.
TC- you don’t have any children, do you?
Holy shit.
Your dog has a better nutrition regimen that 95% of America.
Very cool! I feed my dog Innova too along with Blue Buff, 50%/50%. I usually add some plain yogurt in his evening meal. I only feed 2x a day though. What are some of the methods you have used for weight pull training? My dog is also becoming a big hobby for me.

Here’s Roscoe. P.S. I don’t keep the choke collar on him all the time.
Inova dog food is excellent because it’s made from, well, real food. Not some moldy grain that was rotting.
I feed my dog 3 times a day (she is a beagle, much smaller than your dog). Chicken, liver, omega-3 eggs, salmon, a few fish oil caps, natural PB, and the occasional cheese…she prefers asiago and feta.
I always wondered why people would get a dog then act like it’s a big deal to put more time into feeding it than to open a can. This is another life we’re talking about here, not a toy. But, considering some people feed their children this way, it’s not a big surprise.
…on a side note, my father’s dog is about 12 years old and a mutt. He always fed the dog canned food and the dog was starting to have health problems and slow down. I switched the dog to real foods and he’s acting like a puppy again.
