Just checked the vertical diet to see what veg you’re allowed it’s not too far off what I do. I tend to weekly/twice weekly prep a lot of veg (peppers, plum tomatos, sweet potato, carrots, courgette aka zucchini, onions and garlic) three large trays worth, drizzle them in EVOO and salt them and roast them in the oven until they’re to my taste then use that alongside my meals for the week.
sounds you need to get on the chili train brother. I can make a batch that last a week in 30 mins including doing the rice. Even if I upscale it for more meals it still wouldn’t take 60 mins.
Hey I saw this Rickover quote and wondered if it was the inspiration for your username on here:
“For anyone seeking meaning for his life a figure from Greek mythology comes to mind. It is that of Atlas, bearing with endless perseverance the weight of the heavens on his back. —Atlas, resolutely bearing his burden and accepting his responsibility that gives us the example we seek. To seek out and accept responsibility; to persevere; to be committed to excellence; to be creative and courageous; to be unrelenting in the pursuit of intellectual development; to maintain high standards of ethics and morality; and to bring these basic principles of existence to bear through active participation in life—these are some of my ideas on the goals which must be met to achieve meaning and purpose in life.”
Curious if it was. I’ve learned a fair chunk about Rickover but never read that gem before today.
pleased with my top set. 285x11 is an all time PR, previous best was a 280x6, and that was with a much wider stance. Feeling strong… but Jesus that was a top set. Reps on the SSB are brutal, doing the rest of my sets was awful.
More proof of this process. I hate this volume work, feel like I’m spinning my wheels with all the rep stuff, but it never fails to add weight to my lifts when I actually do it.
Went heavier on RDLs, able to still focus on the stretch, happy there.
Treadmill showed up just as I was finishing my life, so went straight into building that, then took it for its first run. I really like it, super excited to add this to the arsenal. Probably done adding to the home gym until the Mrs and I buy some land and I make a barn gym (I give it a 13% chance of ever happening, but a man can dream)
Having some shoulder pain. Not sure if I ticked it off with the BTN press. I did go heavier, but it hasn’t aggravated it at all before. Only other change is starting dead hangs…which is very ironic if that’s what is pissing off my shoulder
Me: I’m losing weight too quickly, I’m gonna add calories to stop this weight freefall
@alex_uk that looks awesome! I may do something like that down the road. One of my reasons for the vertical diet is some gut issues, one doc said IBS, but a navy doc so that’s not worth much. Trying the FODMAP for a bit to see if it evens me out, but I may add in some variety of veggies after
@simo74 how do you cook all the meat for that? For me, just browning all the ground beef takes a decent bit. Other issue is my rice cooker just takes a long time to cook the rice, that’s normally the longest waiting point for me.
@jdm135 I didn’t pick the username because of the quote, but I did pick it kind of because of what the quote says. I liked the mythology aspect, and the weight of the world on your shoulders seemed super applicable for a weightlifting forum. But, I had this username LONG before the nuclear navy had its hooks in me lol
I don’t think we talked about this.
Get your IBS documented yaknowhadimean. SOunds like you have - but make sure. There are different ratings of IBS, look into it before you see a dr about it further.
I had/have crazy IBS. Literally every day diarrhea, and it can be very unpredictable and strike at very inconvenient times.
I live totally gluten free now… I’m not sure if that ever was the problem or part of the problem.
Oatmeal seems to be an issue for me too.
I went low-fodmap for a long time and I can’t remember… I don’t think it worked though, because I’d have stayed that way if it cured the issues.
Could have been a compliance issue with the fodmap, though, I can’t recall as it was so long ago.
I’ve learned to stop worrying and just take constant sloppy shits.
So honestly now, it’s almost completely gone. Honestly gut health improved so quickly, I wasn’t expecting it.
Really, anytime I ate ship food, I always had about 10-20 minutes until I was going to absolutely blow up a toilet. Without fail. If I ate 3 meals, then it happened 3x a day. Now? Much more regular and less spicy results lol
And yeah, I definitely could do similar cooking scheme, more mean the garlic and onions tend to be a no no. Which is a shame, because I love garlic, so definitely planning to bring it back at some point and see if I’m good
If you could be bothered to watch it there is a video of me making it on my YT, just search Meal prep.
I make a batch with 2kg (4.4 lbs) of meat, which is about half of what you are making. Browning off that much meat at once would definitely be a challenge. I have a pretty large sauce pan and can brown off the entire 2kg of meat at the same time. If I was making double the amount I would just split it into two separate large pans and do them at the same time. Pretty easy to switch between stirring the meat in both of them at the same time and once all the wet ingredients go in they can can just both simmer away together. Only downside is 1 extra pan to was up.
I just cook my rice in a giant sauce pan, long grain basmati rice takes about 15 mins to cook, excluding the time it takes for the water to heat up and be proper boiling when you put it in.
I noticed your knees are coming in right as you start to press out of the hole. Always push them out. You can injure the knees if you let them fall in. Plus pushing out activates the hips more. Just trying to help with some constructive criticism. Nice work in here.
This reminds me of a similar meathead story I’ve shared before. Homeboy wanted to combine all the best gaining foods into one. He decided that was ground beef, oatmeal, and eggs. But now that he had all these raw foods that could make you sick, he thought “How am I going to cook this beast?” and he settled on the oven. It was brilliant!
…he had re-invented meatloaf. Although I imagine that would have been a victory here, haha. But perhaps there’s a meatloaf based solution in the future for you here. I’m wondering how well rice would bake with the beef.
@pb2016 i legitimately appreciate the advice, I am far from any sort of expert, and my skins pretty thick, so please never worry about bruising any sort of ego. I’ll take whatever tips I can to get better! In terms of the knee cave, you’re absolutely right. Something I’ve struggled with for a long time. It’s actually improved a lot, this is pretty minor compared to how much I was doing before, but it’s definitely something for me to work on. Tends to increase with weight, I can push out alright on my warmups, but start caving again on heavier sets.
@T3hPwnisher now I want to try making “monster meatloaf”…. But maybe I should take a break from the experiments. Beef ain’t cheap lol. And thanks, I was pumped about it!
happy with the PR. At my best I hit 200x10 on this, so I’d say I’m at about max incline strength for me. Time to see if I can beat it next cycle.
So my goal here for my max attempts: look up my calculated 10rm based on my week 5 weights and RPE. Then I add 5-10lbs, because my goal is to be beating what the calculator says I can do, since that means I’m actually getting stronger. Then just max reps. Ideally, that’s 10, but if I hit 10 and have more, I’m doing more.
Little shocked at my db bench PR. I was feeling smoked after incline, and I’ve been getting pretty sore from my sets of 10 with 55 the last few weeks. 18 wasn’t expected, but it felt great. Even the backoff sets felt strong, this lift just turned up a gear for me.
Rest of my lifts went fine. Less exciting lifts to try to PR, more just focused on pushing the muscle as hard as I could give repping weight
Going VERY easy on the running. It’s been a bit, and I really don’t want to risk shin splints. The cushioning on the treadmill is definitely helping me out here, planning to add just a few minutes a week, running 2/3x a week
Gained 3lbs since I added another 350 calories a 2 days ago… my body is fluctuating like crazy on this diet. Not sure if it’s just getting used to the drastic change. Staying with these calories at least for the week, then we will see. I need the scale to go the other direction lol, I just wanted to slow the drop, not reverse it!
This workout was brutal. All the volume I can do. Intensity, I can do. Intensity and volume? Took forever and just left me beat. Joints a little cranky. Almost like im due for a deload next week lol
I purposefully quoted those two things, to also remind you that you set a PR in your last session too.
Weight training is an inflammatory activity. The body responds to it with inflammation. That IS what we want it to do…but that also means bodyweight will go up as a result. And if you’re following Stan’s advice regarding sodium/salt, you’ll be seeing that as well. Diet is part of what’s going on, but training too.
Oh 100%. And I’m not “upset” by this, more like “mildly impatient”. I feel great, lifts are going great, conditioning going well, and I feel healthy eating like this. And I have cutting and bulking down pretty well at this point. I just know I take a bit of time to stabilize to an average with a new diet, so I’m kind of at a point where I’m going “cmon dammit, get to the stable so I can start manipulating” lol
Hah! Yup. And, of course, the worst is the “no man’s land” that first 2 weeks of losing weight anyway. Many a cut were ended on day 13. Or the opposite: looking super awesome the first 2 weeks into the gaining and thinking “I should REALLY put the pedal to the medal here, because I’m just getting jacked!”
I was actually explaining this to my wife (she is getting more and more interested in all aspects lifting, which means she’s either really good at faking it because she knows I dig it, or we may be onto the start of an awesome shared hobby) and she was asking why I though I gained weight during this week.
My response was essentially “your bodies inflammation is basically its way of saying ‘wtf was that man?!” Haha
