You’re always such a funny guy. No, the 1950’s and early 60’s. That is in the history books.
Well it is a free country. If some people can’t be bothered to vote… maybe that’s a signal to the political class they need to actually serve the public in a way that engages more voters.Nah… just whiney voters.
For the record I actually think my vote is meaningless and that the entrenched 2 party primary system is in essence tantamount to a cartel. But I vote anyway because ‘civic duty’ or some nonsense that was drilled into my head as a youngster.
Isn’t it Brazil where voting is mandatory? So they have people run as a joke.
Haven’t seen the greatest athlete from Crockett tx on anything for a while. Sorry I missed it.
I will vote for whoever the democratic candidate is whether or not I like them. Reason being that I believe current POTUS to be the most damaging public figure to the fabric of American culture in the past 50 years, and has damaged American influence abroad nearly beyond repair. I cannot imagine how anyone else could be worse… We are at rock bottom with this dufus.
My vote won’t mean much in Washington State, but it’ll be one more popular vote against trump hopefully showing the world that trump is not representative of the majority of Americans.
That’s ridiculous! If you had about .000017% of a dollar, would you consider that meaningless? I think not!
Who was the last Republican presidential candidate for whom you voted?
I appreciate that man … about the above, why would you automatically equate not voting with being apathetic? For instance, when I vote, I vote for something, an ideal, or for a candidate who represents my particular view of something (usually economic), but if noone on the ballot will represent me, why would I vote for them? I’m not apathetic, I’m more concerned that those who would offer their representation for me and my voice do not actually represent that voice…
Haven’t. I really liked McCain, but liked Obama more… Plus, Palin would have killed any candidate for me. That was the first presidential election I was eligible to vote in.
In state elections I’m pretty evenly split. Largely in the hopes of evening out some of the hyper liberal voters. I’m of the socially liberal, fiscally conservative ilk.
Ah.
Not going to sidetrack this thread and don’t care enough to start a new one; otherwise, I’d love to know what that means to you.
I bet you don’t even vote for Progressive Democrats when you vote. Try being the target audience and someone might care when you don’t vote.
To me, it means prochoice, gay marriage, liberal immigration policy, strict environmental, etc. Reduced funding for a number of social services (homeless programs, illegal immigrant social services, drug programs), reduce govt subsidization of fossil fuel industry, balanced/surplus budget at nearly all cost, etc. Also, I’m pretty hawkish on our military.
I’m usually pretty fine with moderate candidates on either side. But the current POTUS thrives on intentionally dividing our country, and embarrasses the country weekly on the world stage. He is an abomination.
Edit: What do you think makes a “liberal” immigration policy?
Could you detail these subsidies? They sound terrible. You’re telling me the greenies are championing free market policies, and are just opposed to non-desirable fossil fuel use? I’m sure you’re not dumb enough to believe a tax break is a subsidy, so I know that’s not what you’re talking about.
So, tax those who really pay taxes at a high enough rate to pay for the goodies voted for by others? Much fiscal conservative.
And you believe this is part of fiscal conservatism? Or is it part of social liberalism?
Generally liberal immigration policy would be continuing DACA, no blankets bans of countries, etc. Depends on the policy though. Ask about a specific policy and I’d be happy to share my thoughts.
Yes, I would consider massive tax breaks meant to prop up an industry a subsidy. If you prefer I use another word, I’ll happily use it. I’d much prefer the govt switch those tax breaks to green energy, and building infrastructure.
Balance the budget at all costs either by a temporary raise in taxes, or much more preferably a cut in program funding.
I added in the part about the military b/c it involves a mix of both social and fiscal issues, and is typically a wildcard in my opinion forming.
Why is your tone and wording so denegrating and confrontational? You asked a question in good faith (I assume), and I answered in good faith.
More on topic, will you be voting in the coming election? For a major party candidate?
There are still local races and Congressional seats. You can write in who ever you want as president, but these local races will have more impact on your life.
I am not going to tell you what to do, but I would encourage you to think about the local level before you decide not to vote at all.
I’m realizing more and more how important these local races are to my daily life.
More on topic, will you be voting in the coming election? For a major party candidate?

Not because I care much either way, but because I strongly dislike most who are strongly opposed to him. Their disappointment amuses me.
Pat, how many issues are really decided at a local level?
Honestly, the Fed only really intrudes one day of the year on my life, tax day. Other than that, local officials are the ones who can put a Waffle House close to where I want it to be.
Sorry to usurp the answer, but off the top of my head: property taxes, school levees, infrastructure bills, local environmental policy, ordinances and zoning code, not to mention a ton of general policy that it takes years to federally overturn (eg sanctuary cities, emission standards, Jim Crow laws, prolife regulations).
Take a drive around your town. Everything in that purview is 90% locally decided (I made up the 90%, I mean most of it) locally. Where parks are, what makes a business district and housing district. How much can be built and where. What trees get removed and what stays, where cell phone towers and power cables go up. Street repairs and signs. Sidewalks. Crime and punishment, etc. How shiny buildings are allowed to be. Water and electricity.
Most of your life happens locally.
