Yes, he was literally charged with crimes and plead guilty to them. Meaning he didn’t have the right to do what he did.
Did he do what he believed he was morally obligated to do? That’s a different question and doesn’t change the legality.

After losing your freedoms for 12 years, not being able to see your family, his plea was one that was under duress.
And those who often write laws are the ones who try and make sure that if something is reported that would embarrass them, then it’s illegal. Good Lord, are you really that naive?

You suggested he had a “right” to do it. He did not based on laws. Same as you don’t have the right to murder someone but you do have the right to continually prove you’re a dumbass.
Was what he did a morally correct action? Again debatable since things like Wikileaks and what that a-hole Snowden did severely weakened US security posture, among other things.
Rights are not the same thing as actions one deems moral because of one’s beliefs. (Hey look - morals are relative)
Don’t commit crimes unless you are willing to pay for them. He knew damn well what he was doing was illegal.
