I was going to add that not drinking enough water will probably signal your body to get rid of minerals as the concentration rises.
I drink hella much water.

Seriously… After a long run or something I can down 32oz without breathing. I have a 64oz jug that I carry around all day and that is NOTHING to polish off once, and its easy to do twice if I choose to. I think the idea is that if you are drinking that much water you also wont want to slam down 900 calories worth of coca cola during the day.
The avg american drinks 2 cans of coke per day. Thats an extra 250 - 300 calories PER DAY of sugar. You do the math of how much fat that is in one year. Replace that with water and bam, the weight wont add on.
